How Soybeans Are Helping Healthcare Industry Weight Loss

soybean helping healthcare industry weightloss soy weight loss

The soybean plant is a legume famous for its edible bean which is consumed in a variety of ways, including in the form of soya chunks, soy milk, tofu, soy sauce, tempeh, and soybean oil. Soybean is widely used as a meat substitute but is also known for its nutritive properties and high protein content. Apart from being high in protein, soybean also contains calcium, sodium, iron, potassium, magnesium, Vitamin B-6, and Vitamin C, and is low in cholesterol.

The health benefits of soybean included improvement in heart health, digestion, bone health, diabetes control, and blood circulation, along with relief from menopausal symptoms and sleep disorders. However, the role of soybean in promoting weight loss has emerged as a significant factor driving the demand for soybean. According to the World Health Organization, more than 2 billion adults around the world are overweight, with millions being obese. Weight loss is essential for those who are obese or over the recommended BMI, so as to avoid health complications such as cardiovascular diseases, heart conditions, stroke, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and even some cancers.

How Soybean Is Helping The Healthcare Industry In Weight Loss

Weight loss is a major segment of the healthcare industry that plays an important role in preventive health maintenance and in managing other health complications. Soybean is becoming a popular choice in the healthcare industry to promote weight loss, especially in the form of soybean oil, which is among the most highly consumed vegetable oils in the world. Based on the soybean oil price forecast the production of soybean oil in the current year is expected to increase by approximately 3.7 percent, as compared to the previous year. Nearly 89 percent of the soybean produced at a global level is used for crushing, with 18 percent of the soybean after crushing being used for oil, and 82 percent used for soybean meal.

● Improved Metabolism

Metabolism is directly proportional to the amount of calories that are burnt during day-to-day activities. An improved and faster metabolism helps in rapidly losing extra weight. Soybeans are a major source of proteins and help in boosting metabolism and overall good health. Soybean proteins also aid in the repair of damaged cells in the body.

● Feel Fuller Longer

In order to reduce weight, it’s necessary to modify or reduce the diet as well. Soybeans and related products have been known to act as an appetite suppressant and reduce chances of overeating as consuming soybean-based products help consumers feel fuller for a longer period of time. Feeling fuller after a meal also reduces the cravings for unhealthy snacks that often contribute to weight gain.

● Better Blood Sugar Levels

Since soy proteins have a low glycemic index, their consumption won’t result in a rapid rise of blood sugar levels, preventing over secretion of insulin in the body. Extra insulin production risks converting any extra sugar in the bloodstream into body fat. Foods that help maintain steady blood sugar levels and insulin secretion levels, such as soy products, help prevent fat gain and also reduce hunger cravings.

● Low In Calories And High In Nutrients

Many crash diets and weight loss regimes make use of food and beverage items that are not necessarily healthy for the human body in the long-term but do cause short-term weight loss. With a growing number of people, of all age groups including children, gaining weight and becoming obese, it’s necessary to consume foods that are low in calories yet also high in nutrients, such as soybean. The health benefits of soybean, along with the nutrients and vitamins present in it and the low-calorie value makes soybean an ideal food choice for those looking to lose weight.

● Suitable For All Dietary Preferences

Modern lifestyles have resulted in a greater prevalence of dietary preference, with more people becoming vegetarian and vegan. For the healthcare industry, soybean is an excellent alternative to fish and meat proteins for vegetarians and vegans, offering in some cases an even better source of protein and way to maintain a weight loss encouraging diet. In emerging countries or countries farther inland where fish are not as easily available, soybean product is a great substitute.

Enjoy The Joy Of Soy!

The popularity and demand for soybean products, whether in the form of soya chunks, tofu, soy milk or soybean oil, is growing at a steady pace, driven by a more health-conscious consumer base. Soybean is full of nutrients and helps in boosting heart health, bone health, digestion and more. Apart from the general health benefits of soybean products, soybean is helping the healthcare industry in weight loss as it promotes weight loss in various ways. Soybean products are full of protein, have a low glycemic index and cause consumers to feel satiated for longer by suppressing the appetite. As the prevalence of obesity and weight gain increases worldwide, soybean is a useful and natural superfood for losing weight.

Soy: Nutritional Myths & Realities

Just a couple of the soy staples at my house

If you’ve been reading long enough, you know that for a short period of time, I experimented with a vegan diet. I tried it, but for a variety of reasons, decided that it wasn’t right for me or my family. However, I did get exposure to alternative forms of protein during this spurt, soy being one of them. Over time I’ve adopted a well-rounded approach to how I get my sources of protein and calcium. By that I mean that I incorporate meat, fish, dairy, beans, and soy into my diet.
Soy, I know, is one source that for many people, throws up a red flag. I had my doubts about it, too, which is why I’ve done some research into how and why it can fit into an athletes’ diet. One of my sources was a recent study, “The Effect of Protein Blend vs. Whey Protein Ingestion on Muscle Protein Synthesis following Resistance Exercise.” What did the study uncover? That a protein blend of soy, whey and casein might be best to consume post workout for the purpose of building muscle. The study showed that this combination increased a person’s anabolic window, or the amount of time it takes for muscle building post exercise.
Why the combination? Because each separate type of protein is absorbed at a different rate during digestion. Whey protein is absorbed quickly, casein protein somewhat slowly, and soy protein falls in the middle. With all three at work, you get an extended release of amino acids to the muscles. Makes sense to me.
FitFluential led a Twitter chat the other night on the topic of soy protein and I jumped in to see what I could learn. We covered a variety of topics relating to soy protein, including how it could be used by athletes, how it can play a role in children’s diets, and where you can find soy protein. We also got into some myths regarding soy protein and I learned the following:
  • Myth #1: Anybody who has had breast cancer should avoid traditional soy foods such as tofu and soy milk.
  • Reality: The American Cancer society says that breast cancer patients can safely consume up to three servings of traditional soy foods per day.
  • Myth #2: Soy foods contain estrogen and men who eat them may experience feminization or even impair their fertility.
  • Reality: Soy foods do not contain estrogen, although they do contain phytochemicals called isoflavones that fall into the “phytoestrogen” or “plant” estrogen grouping. Clinical evidence indicates that soy foods do not feminize men, lower their testosterone levels or lower their sperm concentration.
  • Myth #3: Because the protein from soy is a plant protein, it isn’t a complete protein containing all nine essential amino acids.
  • Reality: Soy protein contains all essential amino acids in sufficient amounts to meet biological requirements and is therefore considered a complete protein.
I thought all that was interesting and it makes me wonder where urban myths like those about soy protein even get started. I never bought into them in the first place, but it’s nice to see the truth behind the rumors about soy.
As with anything else I eat and feed my family, I use soy protein in moderation. But it’s a perfect way to mix things up and I like the many ways you can add soy protein into your diet–via soy milk, yogurt, tofu, tempeh, and edamame. To me, it’s an obvious choice as an athlete and parent.

GNC Protein Powder Reviews! Soy, Whey, Casein, & Egg Oh My!!!!

Hey Frugal Fitness Fans! I recently decided to try out all of GNC's various types of protein powder in my quest to be the ultimate supplement and health food guru. I've tried a LOT of protein powders in my day, hundreds of brands and products actually. Not exaggerating at all, I've tried it all. It had been awhile since I had GNC 100% Whey and Soy though, and I had not tried their Casein or Egg Protein powder except in smoothies with many other ingredients so that isn't usually the best single test of a protein powder. Although I am getting into making more smoothies (posted 1 video so far but TONS more coming soon), I usually just drink a scoop of protein powder in skim milk, soy milk (light vanilla or non-flavored), or water (shaker cup) so that's how I'll be testin these bad boys out. Here is a little information about each type of protein and how they stacked up in my book:

GNC 100% Whey Protein: Whey protein, a very fast digesting protein, has the highest quality amino acid content of all protein, and this is the pure stuff without any extra carb or fat filler. Great tasting, easy to mix, rich in BCAA's and essential amino acids, plenty of glutamine, and a nice frugal price buying in big tubs! I've been taking GNC 100% Whey for about 8 years now with water, skim milk, soy milk, in smoothies, and more!

GNC 100% Casein Protein: Casein protein is a very slow digesting complete and high quality protein powder source. It is rich in BCAA's, low in cholesterol, and very high in calcium! Casein protein powder gives you the long lasting amino acid supply you need throughout the day and at night while you are sleeping to stay anabolic! I always take mine with skim milk before bed.

GNC Soy 95 Protein: Soy is one of the only non-animal sources of protein that is considered complete, which means it provides all of the essential amino acids needed by your body. It is a relatively quick digesting plant-based source of protein that has an excellent amino acid profile, heart healthy unsaturated fats, saturated fat free, and high in iron! Great for variety, vegetarians, or vegans! I've been taking more soy protein lately each day and I think it's been a good choice! The Soy 95 mixes well and tastes great in water, milk, or a smoothie! SOYLICIOUS!

GNC Egg Protein: Egg protein is an underrated source of high quality amino acids and BCAA's. It is a relatively quick digesting complete protein from natural egg white sources. This protein powder is almost completely fat free, has a whopping 25 grams of protein per serving, and is very high in potassium making it ideal post-workout for total recovery. It's great for diversifying your protein intake, mixes instantly, and tastes pretty darn good! I love me the Chocolate Supreme flavor! I usually take this post-workout with water, skim milk, or fruit smoothie. Much better than Rocky Balboa's old "Egg Protein Shakes" + no risk of salmonella :) An EGGScellent choice indeed! :p

Try these great protein powders out today & learn the real meaning of diversifying your portfolio, your protein portfolio! It will pay dividends indeed when it comes to your health, fitness, & performance!

Soy Protein On The Go and $50 Grocery Gift Card Giveaway!

Good day Frugal Fitness Fans! As I've been telling you, there are so many benefits to getting in soy and soy protein into your daily diet. You can get extra antioxidants, heart healthy fats, and high quality complete protein equal to or better than any other source! Now I want to make sure that you can get in the benefits of soy protein in the hustle and bustle of real life. In today's busy on-the-go world, you'll need some quick and portable choices and strategies to keep that soy protein comin!

The first method is very simple, bring a bag or jar of soy nuts or edamame (crispy young soy beans) with you in the car, the bus, in your purse, your briefcase, your desk at work, gym bag, or wherever else you might be! These are long-lasting and all natural sources of soy protein and other great nutrients like fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, that are both convenient and won't spoil. A serving size for each of these great simple options is about a handful and it will help to keep you nourished, full, and fueled for an hour or two.

The second way is to utilize health and protein bars to get in that high quality soy protein when you're on the move and don't have time to cook some tofu or imitation meats. Bars are so convenient to take with you anywhere, but just make sure not to let them overheat especially if they contain chocolate or fruit. The bars usually have plenty of calories, fiber, nuts, and often fortified with plenty of vitamins and minerals. A good quick option with no prep time at all, save money by buying in bulk or online!

The third and final way I recommend to get in that extra soy protein on the go is through soy milk and protein shakes! If you don't know I love my protein shakes, than you haven't been reading or watching Frugal Frugal haha. If I'm at home and have a minute, or I'm going to drink it within 10-20 minutes, I'll usually use soy milk to mix my protein powder. If I'm going to be sipping on it for awhile, or won't be drinking it for awhile, I'll just mix with water or leave powder in a shaker cup to mix with water later. While protein powder is portable, hard to spoil, and high quality, it is also fantastic for getting in almost pure protein without added macronutrients or calories if you are trying to stay lean. There are also so many pre-made and ready to drink smoothies to take on the go that taste great. Many have added antioxidants!

Now that you are officially a soy protein jedi master, you should have no problem getting in plenty of soy protein daily even with your hectic schedule. Now go forth my Frugal Fitness child and teach others the ways of eating healthy on a budget! Enjoy and stay healthy my friends!

New Year's Resolutions: Getting Enough Soy Protein in 2012 & Grocery Gift Card Giveaway!

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you had a happy and healthy holiday season! It's that time of year for New Year's Resolutions, and I have a lot of important ones this year. I made some very important Resolutions last year and (especially the 2nd half of the year) achieved many of them to make some major changes for the better. This year, I am looking to take even larger (but still realistic) steps towards improving my health and quality of life, and making sure to start from Day 1! I hope you are all doing the same!

One of the many New Year's Resolutions I have made is to get in enough Soy Protein daily. It's recommended that you should get in at least 25 grams of soy protein daily to get significant benefits from the soy such as reducing the risk of heart disease! Now I may only be 26 years old, but I know that you need to start taking advantages of those benefits NOW so that decades from now my heart is strong and healthy. Heart disease can strike anyone at any time, and a heart (the motor of your body) that isn't functioning at 100% will obviously limit your mental and physical capacity. Soy protein can also help reduce bad (LDL) cholesterol while improving good (HDL) cholesterol! I have always eaten pretty healthy and exercised, but due to genetics I have always higher than average levels of cholesterol. Because of that, I need to make sure to improve my levels with the health benefits of soy protein and other sources of Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Soy protein is also very low in saturated fat which leads to worse levels of cholesterol, blood pressure, and heart health. Definitely a better choice than a fatty burger, hot dog, or other traditional choices!
Soy protein is a complete protein source so it can help to support your body's demands as well as animal-derived protein. Because of its many uses in the body (which are too numerous to name in this post), protein could be considered the most important of the macronutrients. I know I maximize my soy protein and overall protein intake to build lean muscle mass and improve muscle recovery from intense workouts. I've been making sure I get enough protein in my diet for a decade and it has served me very well in both health and physique. Now I'm making sure at least 25 of those grams of protein are from soy sources so I can make even greater improvements!

How do I get in all of my daily soy protein? 25 Grams is easy! You can get in 25 grams of very high quality soy protein just from about 1.5 scoops of soy protein powder! You could also get it in with several glasses of soy milk and a scoop of soy butter! Often times, I get my soy protein through my Kashi Go Lean cereal (9 grams of protein per serving or more!) and soy milk added to the cereal. If I'm on the go, sometimes I'll grab a Sambazon soy protein smoothie and/or a PowerBar Protein Plus bar. There are also dozens of frugal and delicious healthy ways of getting in your 25 or more grams of soy protein per day such as edamame, soy crisps, regular soy beans, tofu, imitation meats, and health bars. With the growing number of healthy and great tasting options, getting all the health benefits of soy protein has never been easier!

I've been succeeding big time on my New Year's Resolutions, I feel great, and I hope you are too! Good luck everyone and Happy New Year!

Holiday Meal Makeover With Soy!

A very Happy Holidays to you from Frugal Fitness! I hope you are all enjoying a happy and healthy holiday holiday season and really making the most out of the end of the year. While it is a joyous occasion for a lot of people, it can also be a difficult time to maintain optimal levels of fitness and nutrition. There are Christmas and New Years parties, family get-togethers, reunions with friends, presents to buy, traffic, and plenty of very sweet treats everywhere you turn. The stress, busy schedule, and unparalleled convenience of junk food can cause even the most religious of fitness addicts to gain a few pounds. But that's why I am here, Captain Frugal SoyMaster to help you make some smarter choices this holiday season and keep your waistline (and wallet) in check.

In my house our tradition used to always be bacon and eggs Christmas morning, with plenty of toast and real butter. We'd have hot chocolate, coffee with cream and sugar, hot apple cider, and often some more pork products in the form of Taylor Ham. For dinner we'd have shrimp scampi with a rich creamy sauce. In between it would be Christmas cookies and candy most likely. Now that's not very ideal nutritionally speaking and we had to make a change for the better.
We started cleaning up our Christmas morning tradition by subbing out the bacon and Taylor Ham with Boca Breakfast Patties. These taste great and are a massive nutritional improvement over their meaty counterparts. We usually still have eggs but sometimes substitute with egg whites or Egg Beaters for lower calories and fat. We still have toast and butter but we've switched the white bread to whole grain or multi-grain and the real butter to Smart Balance buttery spread which utilizes healthier soybean oil and other vegetable oils. We cut out the sugary hot spiced apple cider for chocolate or vanilla soy milk and added regular soymilk to our hot chocolate and/or coffee instead to improve our beverages' nutritional rating.
Soybean and Vegetable Oils = Omega 3's minus the Saturated & Trans Fats!
For snacks between the late breakfast and dinner, now I usually just have a bowl of Kashi Go Lean Crisp Berry Crumble with soy milk, and a soy protein shake with powder and soymilk. This fills me up and keeps me energized for a long day of opening presents, working on the computer, and spending time with family (gotta love em!). If I'm still hungry, I'll have a little more coffee with soy milk and maybe some edamame, soy crisps, or a scoop of soy butter.

We still usually eat shrimp and pasta for dinner, but we've made improvements there as well! First off, we lower the fat and cholesterol content big time by using soy sauce and other spices to flavor the shrimp. Then we switched out the white pasta for whole grain, either Barilla or generic will do! Might add some red pepper as well and I think overall it tastes just as good, and with less than half the calories and fat! Of course feel free to add as many veggies as you'd like to the meal such as broccoli, snap peas, and carrots.

For dessert we don't eat a lot of pies, cakes, and regular cookies anymore. We usually have a low calorie tasty treat like StonyField Organic Soy Yogurt in tons of great flavors or Kashi Krispy Treats (like Rice Crispy Treats except 100 times better for you and still tasty!). We might have a Kashi cookie or two, or even make our own Christmas cookies or cookie bars with soy protein powder and/or Kashi cereal! You can even decorate your homemade Kashi cookies to make them more festive! Another good dessert is hot cocoa with Silk Vanilla or Chocolate Soy Milk added liberally for an even richer taste!

Also, don't forget to take a nice group walk after your holiday meals to help burn off some extra calories and stay active! Get those family members off their butts and get them going, even if it's snowing!

Rice Crispy Treats w/ Kashi instead = SUPERIOR!
Overall, with the inclusion of some soy products, you can eat and drink much healthier this Holiday Season without giving up taste and tradition! Enjoy!
Kashi Cookies: Store bought or make your own!
You can't go wrong!
Remember to give thanks for all you have, and to show your thanks for your health by taking care of it!

And now to help you make that holiday meal makeover, another fantastic Grocery Gift Card Giveaway! Surviving Holiday Eating: Choosing Lean Proteins

The holidays are a great time to enjoy meals and parties with family, friends, and coworkers. However, if you are like most people in the United States, the holiday eating can really get out of control and lead to major seasonal weight gain. Even if you work out consistently, it might be no match for the plethora of cookies, candy canes, eggnog, champagne, and other rich treats. The key to surviving and even thriving during this foodfest free-for-all is to educate yourself and have a game plan!

My solution (to every problem) is protein! Haha ok well maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but choosing the right lean proteins can be a huge first step in conquering the holiday weight gain trap. Lean proteins can help to play a major role in muscle growth, muscle recovery, immune system health, bodily functions, and feeling satiated (full) among many other things. If you are working out consistently and/or intensely, getting enough protein will be necessary for optimal performance.

Sounds simple enough right? Well it's not always so cut and dry. There are good sources of protein that can help you stay leaner, and lower quality sources of protein that usually contain significant amounts of saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sugars, and other unsavory chemicals. Good sources of protein can include eggs, egg whites, skim milk, turkey, chicken, tuna, salmon, and soy products. Poor sources of protein include fatty burgers, fast food, processed and frozen foods, bacon, whole milk, pastries, butter, cream cheese, and unfortunately hundreds of other items and products.

Soy is the only plant source that provides complete proteins comparable to animal-derived proteins, which means they provide all of the essential amino acids. Soy also contains primarily unsaturated and heart healthy fats unlike a lot of animal-derived protein which instead can harm your cardiovascular health. You can get your soy protein in the form of cereal (like Kashi Go Lean), smoothies (like Odwalla), protein powder, imitation meats (like tofurky , bar (protein / energy bars such as PowerBar Protein Plus), or snacks (edamame). You can get in your supplemental protein with these lean sources or just substitute them in for other meals and/or fattier sources of protein. I also like to get in a nice protein-rich snack before I go out to eat or to a party, so the chances that I will overeat there will be greatly diminished. Overall, you'll have a net gain in protein and a net loss in bodyfat to end this year on a good note and start next year strong!

Keep these tips and suggestions in mind when they pass around that plate of bacon-wrapped scallop or ask if you want another slice of that Christmas ham! There are other options when it comes to protein that can keep you lean and mean this holiday season! Happy Holidays and Stay Healthy Everyone!

Cheers to Lean Proteins!
