7 Things Vegans & Vegetarians Should Consider

things vegans and vegetarians should consider for healthy diets

Many people are consciously turning towards vegetarianism or veganism for health reasons. It is commonly believed that a vegan diet will help to extend your longevity because it keeps you healthier and fitter. Whatever your reasons for becoming a vegan, it is important that you know exactly what a vegetarian diet entails and what precautions you need to take in order to supplement the nutritional deficiencies that may arise from such a diet. Research has proved that most illnesses and cancers are predominantly caused by diet and when you follow a vegan diet; you can actually reduce risks of chronic degenerative illnesses like obesity, high blood pressure, different forms of cancers, coronary heart diseases, diabetes etc. Read more below for more information on eating healthy as a vegetarian or vegan.

What to know before becoming a vegan:

Protein intake: A diet rich in proteins is absolutely essential because these are needed for cell growth and repair. Your daily diet will lack animal proteins when you choose to become a vegan. So, you need to ensure that you eat substantial amount of plant-based proteins like whole grains, lentils, beans, soy and quinoa, seeds and nuts, legumes, leafy green veggies, fresh fruits etc.

Vitamin B12: Since Vitamin B12 is mainly found in animal proteins, a vegan diet is likely to be deficient in this essential nutrient. You may therefore need to take Vitamin B12 supplements because this vitamin is responsible for keeping your blood and nerve cells healthy. Without this vitamin, you are likely to suffer from fatigue and constipation, appetite loss and nerve problems.

Iron supplements: You may also need to take iron supplements when you have chosen to become a vegetarian. Iron is found in two forms called heme and non-heme. The former is found in animal foods that get absorbed by the human body easily. However the non-heme that is found in plant foods does not get absorbed as easily. Good vegetarian iron sources are sunflower seeds, dark green leafy veggies, legumes and dried raisins. All foods rich in vitamin C like citrus, broccoli and red peppers help to absorb iron.

Avoid junk: Animal products should not be replaced with junk foods when you have chosen to become a vegan. You should not try to replace meat with packaged foods or white pasta and bread. Processed foods will offer hardly any nutritional value besides empty calories.

Control soy product intake: Just because soy is a great vegan protein source, you must not take in excess amounts of it. Incidentally, there are many studies that prove that taking in a lot of soy products is perhaps even worse than eating high-protein animal products. The healthiest soy sources are tempeh, tofu, miso, soy milk etc.

Food labels: When you want to take up a vegan diet, you must be careful to read food labels. Simply because you think that a food is glaringly non-vegetarian does not make it necessarily suitable for a vegetarian.

Make the change slowly: Turning into a vegetarian overnight is not recommended. You should make this transition slowly by adding some additional plant based foods in your daily diet. This should be followed by reducing your intake of animal proteins and doing away with refined and processed foods.

Veganism Considerations

The key to becoming a vegan is to make the changes in your diet slowly. This allows the body to adapt to the changes better. Moreover, if you are considering vegan diet mainly for weight loss, you can use the services of recognized meal delivery companies that include vegetarian diet plan.

For instance, Nutrisystem, which is an accredited meal delivery service, offers a vegetarian diet plan for those who seek weight loss through consuming only vegetarian foods. They also encourage having a lot of fruits and vegetables additionally to make your diet nutritionally balanced. Nowadays, with the vegan diet becoming popular, you can also enjoy a variety of exciting menus in every restaurant on a budget and without missing key nutrients.

How To Survive On $35 Per Week Food Budget

how to survive on $35 per week grocery budget food stamps

Hey Frugal Fitness Fans I have an excellent grocery store savings plan for you today! As an elite cheapskate and poor twenty-something, I knew I wanted to take the #SurviveOn35 Challenge of surviving and thriving (eating healthy) on a $35 food budget for a week. Why $35 for the weekly food budget spend limit? Because that is about equivalent to the amount of government assistance a typical impoverished individual might receive, often in the form of food stamps. This challenge sheds light on the very serious hunger, health, and poverty problems we have in the United States, other first world nations, and all over the world.

While there are some critics of the challenge, I think they are missing the point and that it is an excellent educational opportunity benefiting some great causes such as food banks and the Cooking Matters organization. If you couldn't tell from my websites and videos, I have always been very Frugal and I am used to making the best out of minimal supplies. Sometimes this has been by choice or habit, but most of the time it has really been out of necessity just to survive in a tough world and a tough economy. I have always made it my mission to prove to others that they can in fact eat healthy even while on a very tight budget.

I have never had or made much money, and have often earned at or below the legal poverty levels for annual income. Please understand that I don't take this challenge lightly at all or consider it a publicity stunt. This is an accurate depiction of my life nearly every week of the year. I empathize greatly with others that struggle to pay basic bills and hope to help those that are even more financially distressed than myself.

I think my purchases during this $35 weekly grocery challenge are excellent examples of foods and products containing large amounts of lean and complete protein, fiber, whole grains, antioxidants, heart healthy fats, micronutrients, and electrolytes as well as maximizing longevity, portability, and simplicity. I even made sure to hit all of the stores in one 4 mile drive so to not waste time or gas.

My approach to eating on a very small budget seems to be significantly different from most of the other participants in this program. While I am all for tons of fruits and vegetables, I also take the macronutrients and calories very seriously. Also, as a man and a natural bodybuilder / powerlifter, I  require more calories than some other participants and I am also focused on minimizing bodyfat while maintaining as much lean muscle as possible (survival comes first though). That means enough protein and healthy fat. I am usually a 165 pound man so I require more calories and protein than some of the other entrants, but everyone has different genetics, goals, time and resources for cooking, and food preferences for a $35 per week food budget.

Also, I am a minimalist when it comes to meals and recipe ingredients. I like it quick, simple, and on the go if possible. Minimal time, preparation, and cleanup, are very important when I am spending a lot of time working to try and make ends meet. So you won't find extremely complex recipes or meals here, just a lot of healthy snacks and simple staple healthy meals, designed for eating small meals around 6 times per day. And yes, like Jerry Seinfeld before me, I like cereal and breakfast foods at all times of day and therefore utilize a lot of (Kashi) cereal and oatmeal! I like versatile foods and I like snacking foods so there are plenty of those in here that fit that description along with being healthy and cost-effective for a frugal diet in 2023.

Nutritional Strategies Utilized To Eat Healthy With Cheap Groceries

So as I mentioned earlier, I have all of these foods chosen for specific nutritional reasons in addition to their low cost to hit my $35 weekly eating budget. It also matters how you eat them and pair them up. I eat 6 times per day, spread out, never a huge amount of calories at once, and usually getting a good mix of complex carbohydrates, lean protein, and heart healthy unsaturated fats in each meal. I consume more calories in the first portion of the day when my metabolism is at its highest. A lot of the food choices that I made have relatively low GI (Glycemic Index) values which means they won't spike my blood sugar and provide long-lasting energy throughout the day. They also have a lot of protein, fiber, and heart healthy fat in them to keep me feeling satiated. These simple yet effective strategies help translate to staying full, energized, lean, and healthy!

Nutritional Value of Foods Purchased

The 2 gallons of skim milk allow me to have over 18 oz of milk per day for excellent sources of complete protein, calcium, Vitamin D, and potassium. The Kashi cereals provided plenty of high quality whole grains for complex carbs, fiber, protein, antioxidants, and pretty low amounts of sugar and fat. The spinach gave me several salads throughout the week and providing Vitamin A, fiber, and antioxidants. The cans of tuna, chicken, and turkey gave me cheap lean additional protein for my salads. The fat free cheese was also used on the salads for more lean complete protein and extra calcium and vitamin D. I even had some left over after salads and just ate it out of the bag by hand! The coffee was for some extra daily caffeine (with cinnamon and skim milk) to enhance metabolism, and so was the green tea which also added high amounts of the antioxidant ECGC twice daily. The JIF Natural Peanut Butter, sunflower seeds, and roasted peanuts provided plenty of heart-healthy unsaturated fats, fiber, micronutrients, and protein. The bananas and apples both provided antioxidants, fiber, and electrolytes. And finally, the sweet potato chips and honey wheat sticks provided some snacking options that were low in sugar and saturated fat (and also another salad topping).

Daily Meal Example:

Because I am a man of habit and simplicity, all of my daily eating patterns were like this throughout the week of surviving and thriving on under $35 worth of food.

Breakfast:
- Coffee with Skim Milk and
- 8 oz Glass of Skim Milk
- Cup of Kashi Heart To Heart Warm Cinnamon with 1/2 Apple Slices, skim milk, & 1 bag of crushed peanuts

Snack #1:
- Handful of sunflower seeds and handful of Kashi cereal

OR

- Scoop of natural peanut butter & banana or apple
- Handful of honey wheat sticks
- Water

Lunch:
-Green tea
-Spinach Salad w/ can of Chicken / Turkey / Tuna + Sunflower Seeds, Fat Free Cheese, & Crushed Sweet Potato Chips

OR

-Kashi Crisp Cereal with 1/2 apple or banana and skim milk

Snack #2:
-Handful of sweet potato chips

OR

-TBSP Peanut Butter with toasted oats

-Green tea

Dinner:
1.5 cups of Oatmeal with 1/2 banana and cinnamon

Snack #3:
-8 oz glass of skim milk
-1 tsp JIF Natural PB

*Lots of free tap water daily!!!! 96 oz daily spread out throughout the day

Leftovers:

So I used up a lot of things by the 7th day but I still have plenty of left over Oatmeal, Instant Coffee, and Green Tea (oh and my landlord pays the water bill... well not hot water but you know what I mean haha)! I also had a bit of fat free cheese that I just finished by hand right out of the bag, because I am classy like that! These are all super-frugal items that will last you a long time and get you plenty of bang for your buck!

Possible Improvements And Modifications

Although I love the products, I think I should have eliminated the Kraft Fat Free Cheese or JIF Peanut Butter, and 1 of the Kashi Cereals, to have freed up about $5.75 to be put towards more salad and additional fruit variety. I still had a good week of nutrition and plenty of fiber / antioxidants but in hindsight I would have made those adjustments. This would have also helped if you were watching your sodium intake or trying to eat more of a Paleo diet. And lastly, I would have utilized that extra .48 to buy another banana!

Conclusion

This past week was certainly another great experience in my Frugal Life. Although I am always on a very tight budget, this week really made me tighten my finances and lifestyle to fully empathize with those that are in even worse financial situations than myself. I didn't indulge in some of the "extras" for food products that weren't completely necessary so it certainly got me more disciplined. I walked to stores and meetings even more often than usual and tried to give back to the community what I could spare.

I would like to reiterate that this is a very personal matter for me and really hope that it has helped to educate and inspire you to improve your nutrition, work as best you can with the budget you have, and to help the impoverished and hungry communities of the world.

Weight Watchers (WW) vs. Frugal Fitness & The Frugal Diet

weight watchers vs frugal fitness vs the frugal diet book

Weight Watchers (now known as WW and partially owned by Oprah Winfrey) has helped a lot of clients that I've worked with and I think it is a pretty good overall program. However, WW doesn't always address all the aspects of nutrition and can also be a lot more costly than my services such a Frugal Fitness, or more specifically my nutritional plan The Frugal Diet. My customized meal plans are a flat rate of $59.99 and at least a month of free internet support.

Weight Watchers is a much longer and often more expensive commitment (especially if you attend most or all of the meetings which is important for community support). The WW internet support is usually an additional fee on top of normal membership. I admit I don't know the exact numbers and I need to look into it a little more in detail, but if I had to guess I would assume you'd spend a lot more money on Weight Watchers than you would on me and you probably wouldn't get any better results.

Weight Watchers doesn't address every aspect of healthy nutrition because it depends largely on a simplified point system that takes the major nutrient type and calories into account, but not the quality of the nutrients, meal timing, blood sugar response, and some other important factors. According to Weight Watchers, 2 pieces of whole wheat toast might be the same exact point value as 3 pieces of white toast. Which one is the healthier choice? Obviously the 2 pieces of wheat toast gives you much more nutrients and a better blood sugar response than the calorie and point equivalent of white toast. That's just one example but you get the idea about WW.

The "ideal weight" that Weight Watchers encourages is dependent on the old BMI (Body Mass Index) measurement which is actually somewhat outdated now. BMI is simply a ratio of weight vs. height and does not take into account the quality of body weight (body fat percentage and muscle). For example, I am obese according to the BMI measurement of about 26 because I am 5'5" and 165 lbs. This is too heavy for my height based on averages, even though my bodyfat is about 12% which is excellent.

frugal diet healthy soup

Weight Watchers meeting costs can also vary depending on if you have maintained your ideal weight, lost additional weight, or gained weight above your ideal weight. You may get to attend WW meetings for free if you are doing well but then have to pay attendance fees if your weight goes over during a week or month.

And let's not forget about the cost of commuting and the time spent adhering to the Weight Watchers system (time is money) that you could be investing in workouts, shopping, or dieting While I do think that Weight Watchers can sometimes be good motivation to stay committed to your diet, I do not really like to punish my clients for having a bad week and charge them extra.

Anyways, there are plenty of factors that you need to take into consideration before making your choice between WW and The Frugal Diet when you are watching your weight.

Do you need face to face group support that Weight Watchers can offer or is internet support enough? Can you make the larger commitment to Weight Watchers?  Do you want to improve your knowledge of nutrition or just go by a simple point system?

That is for you to decide, but I am obviously biased that Frugal Fitness overall or The Frugal Diet book comprehensive nutritional program is the best option for dieters on any budget over WW. Either way, it pays to watch your weight and lose some of that extra bodyfat! Consider either option an investment in your health.

Hiring Your Next Restaurant And Foodservice Recruiter

why hire restaurant recruiter employee foodservice recruitment

Managing and running restaurants are tough jobs, and you must have the right staff who can help you on a daily basis. You need to go to the marketplace to source the fresh ingredients from the local markets, cook a tasty menu, serve drinks, deliver the food and make sure that the customers are getting the best dining experience for the night to keep coming back. More about the roles of restaurant owners and managers on this site here.

This is where you need to hire the best staff that works in the hospitality industry. You can’t just run the show alone. If you need to feed over twenty people in one sitting, it’s essential that you have chefs and line cooks who will sear the steaks and prepare appetizers simultaneously.

However, some restaurant owners and managers find that the restaurant industry is infamous for its high turnover rates. With the stress and increased energy levels that come with the job, it’s not surprising that many employees leave and go out of the revolving door, never to come back. With these restaurateur difficulties in mind, you might want to get the help of recruiters who specialize in the foodservice industry and who can help you find loyal employees who can stand behind your back through thick and thin.

Searching For The Right Recruiters

• It’s crucial for you to find the support you need when it comes to restaurant recruitment.
• Tell the headhunting firm about the roles that you need to fill, whether it’s for a cook or a waiter
• Identify the requirements and responsibilities that the candidates would need to meet
• Know where the best places to find the candidates through the agency
• Hasten the selection process, so there’s no disruption in restaurant operations
• Ask some questions before hiring someone
• Provide a more realistic view of what the job entails
• Make sure to provide adequate training if the employee is onboarding
• Start early and hire before the busy season begins

Challenges To Know About As A Restaurateur

Higher Turnover Of Restaurant Employees

The staff in the hospitality industry is known to leave their jobs at a moment’s notice. The numbers and trends are rising, and there are even studies that the numbers are growing to more than 70%. This is where a restaurant recruiter comes in because a team of experts who have experience in this field will make sure that you’re facing lower turnovers. They know the industry’s needs, and they can help you increase employee retention.

There are several reasons why employees tend to jump ship. For one, the jobs have been lacking in flexibility for some time now, and there are sometimes unclear job roles and expectations. If you couple this with complaining customers, miscommunication in the kitchen, and overall poor working conditions, it’s not surprising why someone else would leave.

A Decline In The Younger Generation’s Workforce

One of the more common jobs for many youngsters before is to become bartenders and waitresses. Over 80% of Generation Z have experienced working at a restaurant. However, the issue lies in the number of seekers as more jobs are becoming available, but fewer of these people are looking to be a waitress. They graduate from college, get their bachelor’s and work in a corporate office.

If you’re thinking that the fight for talent is challenging right now, expect this to become worse in a decade. Many owners are looking for workers, but few are becoming available. Some restaurant owners and managers are even looking to robotics in the future, although that's not feasible for most non-fast food companies. This is why you need a recruitment firm that can provide you with a steady pool of talents that will help your food service business thrive.

restaurateur recruitment

Competition In Local Restaurant Hiring

Your competitors are also doing their best to get the best people for the job. You might find various signs outside the restaurants that they hire or managers who actively seek eligible cooks and chefs to make their food more flavorful and delicious. Know why it’s hard to find good chefs on this site: https://www.quora.com/Why-is-it-so-hard-to-find-good-chefs.

If you’re competing with the other employers in your area, you have a better chance of succeeding when you have the inside knowledge of the talents and candidates that are currently looking for work.

Resilient Restaurant Recruiting

With the help of the right restaurant recruitment firm, you can reach out to them first, offer them an attractive package, and get employees who live near your place. Some of the longest-tenured people are the ones who are in your locality, so don’t miss the chance to meet them.

5 Tips for How to Open a Coffee Shop

steps how to open a coffee shop launch cafe startup

Did you know there are roughly 56,729 coffee shops in the United States?

You may want to open a coffee shop of your own, but you might have lots of questions about the process. How do you pick a good location? How do you select a good coffee machine?

Read on, and you'll learn how to open a coffee shop that'll be successful. If you follow these steps, it won't be long before you're serving a coffee to your first customer.

Let's begin coffee connoisseurs!

1. Location Is Important

One of the critical things you need to consider when opening a coffee shop is the location you're going to choose. After all, if your shop is in the wrong spot, it will be hard to attract customers.

People might go to the middle of nowhere to get a Starbucks, but that's because Starbucks has an established brand. As a brand new coffee shop, you won't have any brand equity, and so people won't travel a long distance to get a coffee from you.

So, what should you think about when selecting a location for your coffee shop?

Ideally, you want to place your coffee shop in an area that experiences a lot of 'footfall.'

If you can do that, your coffee shop will be exposed to a lot of people. Following this, you might want to see if there are any spaces available next to offices or places where people like to shop.

Note that it might take a while before you come across an ideal location for your coffee shop.

Location is one of the biggest factors that'll impact your ability to succeed in this industry. Therefore, there's no point in rushing through this stage, just so you can focus on the next part of the process.

Instead, you want to wait until you find a near-perfect location. If you can do that, you should be able to set your coffee shop up for success.

2. Getting the Correct Paperwork

If you're going to open up a coffee shop, you will need to get some licenses. The licenses you need will depend on the state you're in, and so it's hard to say here what you should get.

That said, in most cases, you will need a business license, and you usually have to pay a fixed fee for this. In some states, you might also need a 'resale license' so that you can charge 'sales tax.'

You may also need to get 'health' and 'food handling' permits so that you can offer snacks and meals within your coffee shop.

If you want to avoid getting into trouble, reach out to your state and ask them what you will need.

During this stage, you might also want to think about getting some insurance for your coffee shop.

Luckily, most insurance companies are used to insuring coffee shops by now. So, if you contact an insurance company and tell them you want to get coffee shop insurance, they should be able to help you out.

3. Getting a Coffee Machine

Coffee machines designed for shops, tend to be quite expensive, and can often be upwards of $2000.

If you want to keep expenses low, you might want to consider leasing a coffee machine. This isn't that hard to do, as there are businesses that cater to those who want to open a coffee shop.

One of the good things about leasing a coffee machine is you don't have to make a significant upfront payment.

It's also worth mentioning that a leasing company will install the coffee machine for you.

This is helpful when you consider that it can be quite tricky to install a professional coffee machine. After all, you'll need to connect it to a water line, and you'll also need to make sure it uses the right pressure when making espressos.

There's also the option of buying a second-hand coffee machine, and this can be preferable if you don't like making monthly payments.

If you go down this route, make sure you carefully inspect a given coffee machine before buying it. You don't have a lot of startup capital to go round, and so you don't want to waste it on a dud coffee machine.

4. Furnishing Your Coffee Shop

Once you have a coffee machine, you need to think about getting some furniture for your coffee shop.

Again, you'll find that there are companies that'll lease the furniture to you, which can be a good option if money is tight.

In the beginning, you might want to get some 'pleasant' but basic furniture. Then once your coffee shop is producing enough profit, you can think about upgrading the decor so that it is more appealing.

If you don't know how you should style your coffee shop, you might spend a weekend visiting different coffee shops. If you visit enough places, you should be able to identify what kind of furniture looks good in a coffee shop.

5. Attracting Customers

Once you've done everything else, you then need to focus on attracting customers.

Luckily, if you've chosen the right location, attracting customers shouldn't be that difficult. That said, you might want to run some ads, just so that people are aware of your coffee shop.

If you want customers to keep on coming back to your coffee shop, you might want to offer a loyalty scheme.

So, you might give customers a card that'll be stamped each time they visit your store. Then, if they get a certain number of stamps, you might give them a free coffee.

Do You Know How to Open a Coffee Shop?

Now that you know how to open a coffee shop, the only thing you need to do is take action.

If you feel a little overwhelmed by all this information about launching a cafe, that's not a problem. Starting a coffee shop is no simple task, and it's easy to be confused by all the moving parts associated with this sort of cafe project.

To begin with, just focus on making a plan that details the steps you need to take to make your dream come true. If you slowly tick off each item on that list, you should eventually be the proud owner of a successful coffee shop. Now brew up a cup of coffee and get started!

Understanding the 7 Main Rules of FSMA

fsma rules food safety modernization act fda

When we buy groceries, we are always looking for safe, high-quality food products from farms and distributors.

This is the reason the FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) exists.

There are seven FSMA rules that help implement safety prevention food practices by people that grow it, process it, transport, and store it. Here are the main food safety rules.

1. Safe Standards for Fruits and Veggies

This rule applies to covered farms to make sure that all fruits and vegetables are following the FSMA plan to at least the minimum standards to grow and harvest produce.

The rule also monitors requirements for hygiene, clean equipment, tools, and buildings.

2. Mitigation Strategies Against Intentional Adulteration

This requires facilities that have to register with the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to write a food defense plan.

The food defense plan has to have an analysis of any vulnerabilities and the procedures followed to monitor the food, along with the actions taken to fix any vulnerabilities.

3. Preventative Controls

This is where a food facility has to have a food safety plan that includes an analysis of hazards and preventative controls to minimize any hazards that are identified.

Another part of this rule is for these food facilities to have a recall plan in place.

4. Sanitary Transportation

This is to help keep food safe from any contamination during transportation. It was put in place to make sure that the proper cleaning is done in between loads and that food is refrigerated properly.

The carriers have to be trained properly to carry out sanitary transportation practices.

5. Third-Party Certifications

This is the requirement for recognition by the FDA. It is also the requirement for third-party companies seeking accreditation.

Those that are accredited can conduct food safety audits and can certify that food facilities are meeting the FDA food safety requirements.

6. FSVP (Foreign Supplier Verification Program)

This is a rule that applies to importers of food into the United States. The purpose of the FSVP rule is to make sure the food being imported meets the safety standards set by the United States.

An importer is the U.S. owner or consignee of the food, the U.S. agency or representative of the foreign owner, or consignee when the food is entering the U.S.

7. VQIP (Voluntary Qualified Importer Program)

This is a voluntary program to receive expedited review and import entry into the United States.

Importers that meet the eligibility criteria pay a fee and can import their products into the United States faster.

What Are Your Thoughts on the FSMA Rules?

Now that you are aware of the FSMA rules, you can have a little more peace of mind that the FSMA is helping the global food chain.

If you are part of the food industry, make sure you are aware of the Food Safety Modernization Act requirements that apply to your business to ensure that you follow the FDA requirements.

How To Start A Winery As A Wine Lover Business Beginner

how to start a winery business wine startup company steps

There's a lot to unpack when you decide to start a winery—and no, we don't just mean wine bottles!

Wineries can make for fun weekend trips, but running your own winery is a different story!

If you're interested in bringing quality wine to other wine enthusiasts, opening a winery might be perfect for you. However, if you don't have any business experience, the idea can be daunting.

We can help you out to start your wine company! Below is a guide that will lay out the basics on how to start a winery business!

How to Start a Winery: Brainstorming

Before you set up shop in the wine business, you'll need to reflect on what you are hoping to get out of owning a winery. While plenty of people can enjoy drinking wine, running their own winery can be a much different adventure.

Starting a winery requires years of investment, from growing and harvesting grapes to aging the perfect bottle of wine. If you are expecting to be rewarded and turn a profit in one day, the winery business is not the place to look.

If you are interested in the business aspect of it but don't want to build your own vineyard from scratch, you might consider buying a preexisting winery and reshaping it in your own business vision!

Buying a winery from someone else cuts out a lot of the time that new wineries must spend growing their vineyards from the ground up. If you're more interested in the business end of things, this is the better choice.

Now's the time to get creative and come up with a style or brand that you want to build your winery around. What can you bring to the wine industry that hasn't been done before?

Building a Business Plan

Once you've committed to the idea of your winery, it's time to build a business plan. Whether you're building your winery from the ground up or buying a winery from someone else, you will need a comprehensive business plan to help you reach your goals.

Your business plan should lay out where you want to take your winery. What customer base are you pitching to? How much will it cost to build and maintain your winery?

Your plan should summarize how much you plan to spend on your winery and how you plan on making a profit. If managing money isn't your forte, consult a financial advisor.

Choosing a Location and Variety

Your location will ultimately determine what type of grapes you can grow. So, if you have a certain type of grape in mind, you may have to limit where you decide to set up base. When learning how to start a winery, you have to become informed on grape varieties and their growing habits in each area.

Grapes are sensitive to frost, so you'll want to hunt out a place that has short and mild winters. The size of your vineyard will also factor into location. Most vines thrive in acidic soil, and the type of soil can even factor into the taste of the wine.

Once you've settled on a location, you will have to choose the types of grapes you want to grow.

Pinot Noir is a unique grape that can age into a unique flavor depending on the location it's grown, and it's popular as a champagne base. Cabernet is a good choice if you're planning on blending them with other red grapes. Chardonnay grapes grow well in many regions and ferment nicely in new oak barrels.

These are but few of many varieties available to grow. You may opt to just start out with one variety and expand from there as your winery grows in business.

Forming Your Winery's Budget

You can't start a winery without a bit of seed money! Whether you've set aside money for this for several years or are figuring it out step by step, you'll need the funds to build your winery business before you start seeing any profit.

If possible, seek out investors who may be interested in a stake of your winery. This is best achieved if you can angle your winery to be something unique and never been done before. Originality sells.

When you map out your budget, take into account the costs for vineyard labor, the costs of building and maintaining a wine cellar, employee pay, as well as fermentation equipment and more. Because the wine-making process is an extended one, it can be easy to overlook certain costs that may pop up in the future.

Build a Marketing Plan

You might feel intimidated when it comes to marketing your winery, especially if you're located in a region that's dense in wineries. But marketing is a must, no matter what field of business you're in.

Automation marketing is growing in popularity, and you should read more on it if you are looking for the perfect way to personalize content for your audience.

Social media continues to reign king for marketing in the digital age, so utilize platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Instagram Stories have become the best free marketing tool out there, and it's the perfect place to blast quick news about your winery.

When you're creating a marketing plan and learning how to start a winery business, make sure you hone in on your brand or unique style. Push whatever aspect of your winery makes it special and build the rest of your marketing campaign off of those one-of-a-kind qualities.

9 Restaurant Management Tips to Increase Efficiency

restaurant management tips increase efficiency

As a restaurant owner or manager, you already know that running the shop is no walk in the park. As such, it'll probably come as no surprise to you that the employee turnover rate is 75% in the industry.

A busy restaurant can be exciting, but also stressful and exhausting. However, if things aren't running smoothly, it can be a complete nightmare.

That's why running an efficient operation is key to any successful restaurant. The entire team, including management, waiters/waitresses, hosts, and cooks all need to be on the same page.

Keep reading for our top restaurant management tips to help your restaurant run as smoothly as possible, blowing the competition out of the water.

Restaurant Management Tips to Increase Efficiency

It's not enough to be a hardworking owner or manager unless you plan on doing all the work yourself. A lot goes into making a restaurant run efficiently. It's all about the employees and the work environment you create together.

Take a look at these tips to increase efficiency, which in turn, boosts employee morale and sales.

1. Set a Good Example

As a manager or restaurant owner, you must set the example. If you want your employees to perform a certain way, you need to show them how. They won't respect you or your wishes if you're constantly harping on them to work while sitting on your phone scrolling through Facebook.

Additionally, one of the best restaurant management tips revolves around the Golden Rule. Treat your employees not only how you want to be treated, but also how you want them to treat each other.

Your employees will not work efficiently if you are prone to blowing up and losing your cool. The more you remain calm during busy and stressful times, the more your employees will follow suit.

2. Maintain a Positive Environment

It's also important for you to create a positive work environment. When employees are happy, they tend to work more efficiently. They will also weather the hardships of working in the food industry better.

However, creating and maintaining a positive work environment takes effort and forethought. It's something you have to build up with your employees, not something you can just demand.

First, you need to make sure everyone is on the same page. All of your employees need to know what is expected of them, both with their work ethic and their attitude.

Part of maintaining a positive environment falls on you. If you are constantly coming down on employees, micromanaging them, and being overly-critical, don't expect to have a good atmosphere.

People should want to impress you because they respect you, not because they're afraid of you.

3. Streamline Your Point of Sales

One of the best restaurant management tips for efficiency concerns streamlining your point-of-sales process.

If you're using an outdated or malfunctioning system that can't keep up with you during rush hours, it's time to upgrade. A slow system could significantly slow you down, potentially leading to unhappy customers and lower sales.

To get an idea of what you need, there are some top-of-the-line sales systems you can see from other restaurants and food service companies.

4. Learn How to Schedule and Hire Employees for Efficiency

Finding the right employees is one of the most important things you can do as a restaurant owner or manager. Who you hire will directly affect how your restaurant operates.

Additionally, over time, you need to learn which employees work best together. Whether they get along too well or not at all, this could affect work efficiency.

Take your time when hiring your staff and don't be afraid to hurt an applicant's feelings if they aren't a good fit.

5. Be Creative

Learning to be a creative problem solver is one of the best restaurant management tips for any owner or manager.

First, it helps you think fast. If an employee doesn't show up for work, you may have to jumble everyone's job that night. Alternatively, if an oven goes down, you'll have to find a way to keep things rolling.

Be creative and think outside of the box for maximum efficiency. Your plans may not always work out, but it's a learning curve.

6. Give Incentives

Another fantastic way to increase efficiency is by rewarding your employees for good work.

Studies have shown that positive reinforcement, rather than negative reinforcement is much more effective for keeping employees happy and working hard. As we said before, as a leader, it's better to be loved than feared.

Appropriate incentives could be small bonuses after a week of high numbers and efficient work, ice cream parties, longer breaks during the slow times, etc. How you want to reward your employees for solid work is up to you, but don't skimp out.

7. Delegate

A good business owner or manager also knows how to delegate, which is one of the most important restaurant management tips.

A manager who can't delegate runs around trying to do everything by themselves. Whether they don't trust others to do it properly or haven't taken the time to train them up, this can lead to extreme stress.

You need to work hard, yes. But you shouldn't be trying to do everything on your own. The more tasks your employees are capable of, the more efficiently your restaurant will run.

8. Learn How to Resolve Conflict

Regardless of how good of a boss you are or where you work, people are going to have a conflict with one another. It's inevitable.

However, instead of looking at it as a huge thorn in your side, view it as a way for you to grow as a leader. A leader capable of conflict resolution is one worth following. Learn how to solve problems in a way that serves everyone's best interests.

A boss whose answer to conflict is "figure it out yourselves" will not gain any respect. As a boss, conflict resolution is your responsibility.

9. Focus on the Customer

Finally, focusing on your customers is one of the most important restaurant management tips to keep things running efficiently. If your main priority is customer satisfaction based on the quality of your food and timely service, efficiency will come naturally.

Put the majority of your effort into making your customers happy and your business will flourish. Happy customers tip. Tips make the team happy. Quality service is a win/win for everyone involved.

Start Making Changes Today

With these restaurant management tips, you're ready to start perfecting your business. Remember, it rests on you to get your employees working at optimal efficiency by being a good boss and providing a positive work environment.

It will take some work, but you can do this as a rockstar restaurateur. We have faith in you and your restaurant management skills.
