Frantic Fitness: 5 Workouts for a Busy Life

As busy as modern life has become, few people find enough time to properly take care of their bodies with regular exercise. Part of the problem is that many exercise routines take up precious time that you may not really have. If you are a busy person in need of a workout, however, there are still several options available to you. Here are five of the best quick workouts for busy people on the go.

High-intensity Interval Training

High-intensity interval training, also known as HIIT, is rigorous cardio exercise performed in short, intense bursts with periods of rest in between. A typical interval for many is 30 seconds of intense exercise followed by 30 seconds of rest. Using this kind of interval training, you can get a great workout in as little as 10-15 minutes. Just don't do CrossFit because CrossFit sucks.

Biking

If you're a busy person, biking is the perfect option for getting your exercise. By biking, you can combine your daily exercise with commuting to places you need to go near your house. If you live in an urban area with heavy traffic, you may even get where you're going faster than you would in a car. Best of all, biking burns up plenty of calories without being nearly as wearing on the joints as running. Be sure to take some time to read up on laws concerning bike traffic in your state before making this a part of your routine though. Some states have legislation that treats bikers the same as motorists on the road, while others have a separate category for them. Knowing your state’s regulations will help you avoid fines and accidents alike.

Weightlifting (The Right Way)

Far too many people write off weightlifting because of how long they think it takes. The fact, however, is that most lifters spend far too much time in the gym. If you just want to get a basic lifting day in, it should take you no longer than 30-45 minutes, depending on the muscle group and the number of sets you do. If you don't buy into the concept of two-hour workouts, you'll be able to manage lifting on a busy schedule.

Morning or Evening Walk

If you want something less rigorous than biking or HIIT, you can try simply going for a walk around your neighborhood in the morning or evening. Not only is this a great way to get out for some exercise, but it's also a good way to relieve stress. If you're dealing with a busy life already, this stress relief may be just as welcome to you as the exercise itself.

Quick Workouts Between Activities

If you really are too pressed for time to truly have exercise sessions in your day, you can still get at least a little exercise in between activities. If, for example, you're a college student, you might be able to squeeze in a couple of sets of push-ups or a jog around the quad between classes. Get creative with your exercises, and find ways to fit them in the 5 or 10 free minutes you may have between one obligation and the next. You won't get the full benefits of a regular workout this way, but at least you'll be getting some amount of exercise every day.

Staying fit on a tight schedule can be tricky, but if you're willing to find ways to work fitness into your schedule, it can be done. Don't let your schedule get in the way of you staying in shape. If you do, you'll regret it as you get older.

New Year's Resolution: Body Fat Reduction & Metabolism Calculation

It's New Year's Resolution time yet again! For many of us, we will focus on getting healthier and reducing body fat (two goals that can certainly go hand and hand). For most people, it is beneficial to determine an organized baseline for initial measurements and implement a consistent and detailed record of progress. Determining body weight, body fat, metabolic rate, and other medical figures (cholesterol, blood pressure, triglycerides, insulin, etc) is a good first step.

When you are trying to lose or gain weight in a healthy manner, it is important to remember that there are many factors affecting bodyweight. Some of these variables include activity level, gender, age, height, weight, and obviously genetics. It is also good to keep in mind that a pound of fat is about 3,500 calories so to burn fat you must create enough of a caloric deficit through exercise and/or dieting. Utilize the Harris-Benedict Equation which uses your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and incorporates an activity factor to determine your total daily energy expenditure in calories The main factor omitted by the Harris-Benedict Equation is lean body mass. Leaner bodies typically need more calories than those with a higher body fat percentage. Because of this, the Harris-Benedict Equation will be very accurate in all but the very muscular (underestimating calorie requirements) and those with very high levels of body fat (overestimating calorie requirements). The first step is to calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR):

  1. Calculate Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR):

Standard BMR Formula
Women: BMR = 655 + ( 4.35 x weight in pounds ) + ( 4.7 x height in inches ) - ( 4.7 x age in years )
Men: BMR = 66 + ( 6.23 x weight in pounds ) +
( 12.7 x height in inches ) - ( 6.8 x age in year )

Metric BMR Formula
Women: BMR = 655 + ( 9.6 x weight in kilos ) + ( 1.8 x height in cm) – ( 4.7 x age in years )
Men: BMR = 66 + ( 13.7 x weight in kilos ) + ( 5 x height in cm ) –
( 6.8 x age in years )

2. Apply the Harris-Benedict Principle:
To determine your total daily calorie needs, multiply your BMR by the appropriate activity factor, as follows:
Sedentary: (little or no exercise): BMR x 1.2
Lightly Active: (light exercise 1-3 days/week): BMR x 1.375
Moderately Active: (moderate exercise 3-5 days/week): BMR x 1.55
Very Active: (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week):  BMR x 1.725
Extremely Active: (very hard exercise, double training): BMR x 1.9

(bmicalculator . net, 2010)

Please remember to just use this as a guideline and consult your physician before beginning a weight loss or fitness regimen. Best of luck with all of your New Year's Resolutions, and I hope Frugal Fitness can be a valuable resource for you! Remember that patience, hard work, and smart decisions are most important.

How Do I Get Rid of Belly & Hip Fat?

Many people come to me that are initially concerned with a "problem area" such as their stomach, "love handles", glutes, back of their arms, etc. Many of them have the idea that just exercising this specific area will get the job done and that total body training is unnecessary. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as “spot-treating” when it comes to working out problem areas. That means, doing a thousand crunches a day won’t get you a six pack and doing a thousand leg raises a day won’t get you tight hips.

The same goes for dieting. You can’t eat certain foods or calorie amounts to directly reduce your waistline or hips. The natural fat deposit areas for men is usually in the stomach and for women in the hips so that means most people will have more fat to lose from those places. You may lose the same amount of fat from your midsection as you are from your arms, legs, shoulders, etc but it might not be as noticeable since those other areas had less fat to begin with.

Only an effective and customized nutrition and exercise regimen will allow you to reduce the bodyfat from these problem areas for the long term. It takes time so don’t get impatient if your desired bodyparts don’t get smaller or leaner immediately.

You may also be tempted to look for a "quick and easy solution" like liposuction or other medical procedures. Keep in mind that these options can be very expensive, risky, and temporary. Supplements claiming to magically tone up your gut and your butt will also usually disappoint, while putting a dent in your wallet and potentially being detrimental to your health.

You probably didn’t put on all that bodyfat overnight so it won’t come off overnight either. Patience!

How To Lose Weight Right

Contributed By Samantha Zeigler, Author of Running and Cupcakes
Back in late October I wrote about how I was joining an 8-week weight loss challenge hosted by a fellow Rhody Blogger. Since then the challenge has been extended until the New Year to keep everyone accountable through both Thanksgiving and Christmas.
But even more exciting than that is that since November 1st I had lost 7 pounds!
I started at 141 pounds, with a goal weight of 130 pounds. Only 4 pounds to go! Woohoo!
Today I am going to share with you just how I am doing it.
1) Eating LOTS of fruits and veggies. I’ve been including fruits and veggies in EVERY meal and every snack. It makes a difference in satiation. I’m trying to get everyone I know involved too – I shared a big bowl of veggies and hummus with my friend Claudia the other night and I made this beautiful veggie tray for my birthday party, and the entire thing went!

2) Massive amounts of H2O and tea.  I have a 32 oz water bottle that I fill a couple of times per day while I’m at work. At home I drink lots of tea (decaf) and also use a 22 oz mason jar for my water.
3) More plant and grain based proteins. I already rarely eat red meat and pork, but I’ve cut back on the amount of meat I’m eating in general. Last week I made quinoa with grape tomatoes sautéed in garlic and served it with a wrap spread with hummus stuffed with spring mix. I also made homemade rice and beans, which lasted me almost the entire week.
I’ve even found myself being more careful when I eat out – I ordered eggplant parmigiana (not the best I know, but could be worse), a turkey/portabella burger, sweet potato instead of regular fries (hey, no judging!). I ate almost entirely vegetarian last week!
4) Switching up the workouts. I haven’t done much of the same stuff in my workouts at all lately. I’ve been lifting, I’ve been running, I’ve been spinning, I’ve been doing yoga. But none of these workouts  have been the same “flavor” at all! I ran a ladder workout on the treadmill, I ran a 5k, I did a leg workout with a coworker unlike any I’ve done before, my yoga instructor changes stuff up every week, and RPM was taught by a different instructor this past week so it was a release I had never taken! Plus I’ve been rearranging furniture, moving boxes, walking the dog, you name it! And I live on the second floor so I have no choice but to use the stairs – a lot. Especially on laundry day.
Here’s a bit more of a look into what I’ve been eating lately:
So there you have it! My way to successfully shed weight during the holiday season!
What secrets do you have to losing weight?

Supplement Review: GNC's Beyond Raw REFINE Fat Burner / Energy Booster

Get RIPPED With GNC's REFINE!
What's up Frugal Fitness Fans! I know you love hearing about my favorite Frugalicious Nutrition products, so I got another review for y'all! For the past 8 weeks or so, I've been taking one of GNC's relatively new products "REFINE" from their fantastic new hardcore line of supplements "Beyond Raw". REFINE is a hardcore and very effective energy booster and fat burner with clinically tested ingredients. You take it in the morning and/or pre-workout for a massive pick me up and performance boost! You have caffeine, micronutrients, amino acids, and herbal ingredients all working in synergy to power up your workouts! And since it is made by GNC, it can be a more Frugal alternative mass-builder, especially with GNC's Gold Card discounts and sales. I'm a big fan of REFINE, here is how I've been using it and enjoying it's benefits!

Since I've been using it I've been doing my normal mix of 4-5 days of resistance training for bodybuilding focus (so muscle group splits usually), along with 3-5 days of low-moderate cardio (walking, jogging, exercise bike). Each workout is about 45-60 minutes long on average. With REFINE added to my daily regimen, I can tackle these workouts even while working 5-60+ hours a week! I've even been sick a bit recently, and normally once I feel better, it takes a day or two to get back in the swing of things in the fitness department! Not anymore!!

I recovered from being sick much quicker and had energy to burn the day I wasn't sick anymore! I got in a great workout instead of just a mediocre gradual one. Because of my increased training intensity and longevity, plus the key ingredients in REFINE, my bodyfat is down and muscle mass is up!

How do I take my REFINE? I take it in the morning usually with my high protein breakfast for a boost right off the bat. It works better than coffee and it's much quicker and more convenient! Also, about 30-60 minute pre-workout I will take it, especially if I feel like I'm dragging a bit that day. I just take it with plenty of water and often times a protein shake (Re-Built Mass anyone?). Plus, you can take it along with GNC's other Beyond Raw Series supplements such as Re-Forge and Ravage for even more synergistic benefits!

How will REFINE help you? That's for you to find out, I highly recommend giving it a try today! You can order it online on  GNC.com or at your local GNC store. Don't forget to get your Frugal discount with your Gold Card! :) Enjoy the more intense workouts and fat-burning!

Frugal Fitness Answer:

Quite the series of questions you have there my friend! I assure you that you can get abs just like anybody else, ethnicity does not play a role if you are being at all serious. Congratulations first on losing 80 lbs in 6 months, that is incredible! Bodyfat of 15% is a good starting point for physique improvements and you are not that far off from seeing that six pack! Most guys need to lower down to 12% or less to start seeing significant abdominal definition. That is accomplished with proper resistance training, cardio, and dieting and certainly takes time depending on a number of other factors such as your age, other daily activity, genetics, lifestyle, etc.

So it seems like you want to build up the muscles as well as reduce your bodyfat. To do either of these in any extreme direction you really need to focus on just 1, as they are both contradictory. To build muscle you need to create a caloric surplus by eating more and/or doing less exercise, to burn fat you must create a caloric deficit through dieting and extra cardio / workouts. If you want to try and get the best of both worlds, I'd recommend doing heavy weight training in the 6-12 repetition range with 30-90 seconds of rest between sets, 4-5 days per week. This workout split (divided into muscle group splits of course) will help to maximize muscle mass. For cardio I would do 3 days per week, 30-45 minutes each time, of low intensity with high intensity intervals of 30-60 seconds interspersed every 3-5 minutes. This will give you some extra fat burning, a good metabolic boost, and minimize excess muscle catabolism that could occur from too frequent or too intense cardiovascular exercise. For dieting, I would eat high protein, low-moderate carbohydrates trying to minimize simple sugars, and moderate healthy fat intake that can be supplemented with omega-3 and CLA capsules if needed. A cup or two of coffee or green tea a day can also help a bit to boost up the body's fat-burning metabolism.

As for the pro-hormone question, I would say absolutely do NOT bother with any of that nonsense. There are pseudo-legal and illegal pro-hormones and steroids out there such as M-1 Test and they are simply not worth the health risks. If they work, you will destroy your body's hormonal equilibrium, create major health risks for heart / kidneys / liver, make you susceptible to premature balding or back acne (backne), cause depression / anxiety / aggression, and more. Doesn't really sound worth it in the grand scheme of things just to add a few plates to your bench press. If they don't work, you spent a ton of money for nothing, potentially damaged your liver / heart / kidneys, and possibly broke the law. Different states and different countries have laws on specific supplements and pro-hormones, and some supplement stores still sell (usually under the table) some products that have been pulled from shelves by the FDA because they can get good money for them. I would stick with the basics of lifting heavy, getting in your cardio, eating right, and taking legal and more safely proven nutritional supplements. Hope this helps and stay natural!
