Benefits Of NAD+ Supplementation For Aging And Cellular Health

nad+ supplementation aging benefits cellular health

Aging is a natural process, but science and nutrition are continually finding ways to ease its impact on our bodies. One promising avenue of research is the role of Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD+) in cellular health and longevity. This coenzyme is found in all living cells and plays a critical part in metabolic processes. Resources like nad.com provide comprehensive information on this coenzyme.

While NAD+ is a critical enzyme, its levels decline with age, leading to various age-related health issues. NAD+ supplementation can potentially help replenish these declining levels, thereby supporting better health outcomes. Below, we explore the remarkable benefits of NAD+ for aging and cellular health.

The Science Behind NAD+ Supplementation And Anti-Aging

The connection between NAD+ and aging hinges on its ability to enhance the activity of sirtuins, which are sometimes referred to as "longevity genes". These genes protect cells from dying, regulate inflammation, and manage DNA repair—processes that are at the core of slowing down the aging process. By supplying the body with NAD+, sirtuins can perform optimally, potentially leading to a healthier, longer life.

Studies involving NAD+ precursors have shown promising results in age-related conditions such as muscular degeneration, neurodegenerative diseases, and metabolic disorders. For example, mice supplemented with NMN demonstrated improved age-related metabolic decline and increased longevity. This has provided a scientific basis for exploring the effects of these supplements in humans.

Clinical trials on NAD+ supplementation in humans are in progress. They evaluate not just its potential anti-aging effects but also its impact on diseases related to aging and metabolism. While the mechanism in human biology is complex, the research aims to establish a firm connection between increased NAD+ levels and improved health span.

Improving Metabolic Functions Through NAD+ Boosting

One of the standout features of NAD+ is its ability to support and improve metabolic functions. It is intricately involved in redox reactions, which are fundamental processes for converting food into usable energy. Improved metabolism is not just about having more energy; it also involves better regulation of blood sugar levels and reduced fat accumulation, which are important for preventing metabolic diseases.

Enhancing NAD+ levels through supplementation has shown potential in improving insulin sensitivity and preventing metabolic abnormalities. This could be particularly beneficial to those with type 2 diabetes or other metabolic syndromes. With better cellular energy production, the body can function more optimally, supporting overall health and wellness.

Beyond these metabolic pathways, NAD+ also influences circadian rhythms, which control sleep patterns, hormone release, and eating habits. By stabilizing these rhythms, NAD+ might help to align these functions more harmoniously, which could improve metabolism and potentially lead to healthier aging.

NAD+ Supplementation For Enhanced Energy And Brain Health

The search for increased vitality often leads to the realm of cellular health, where NAD+ supplementation is steadily gaining recognition. Feeling energetic is a direct result of robust cellular energy production, and with NAD+ being pivotal to this process, it forms a crucial element in addressing fatigue and low energy levels. The link between higher NAD+ levels and improved energy is one of the reasons many seek out these supplements.

But the benefits of NAD+ go beyond just a boost in physical energy. Cognitive functions are also positively influenced, as the brain is one of the most energy-demanding organs in the body. With improved mitochondrial function, essential for cognitive processes, NAD+ can support brain health, leading to better concentration, mental clarity, and memory.

Age-related cognitive decline is a major concern, and research suggests that NAD+ might play a role in protecting against neurodegenerative diseases. While more studies are needed to confirm these benefits in humans, the prospect of supporting brain health through NAD+ supplementation is an exciting development in neuroscience and gerontology.

Altogether, the prospects of NAD+ supplementation present an exciting frontier in the bid to support cellular health and combat aging. With ongoing research, the hope is to refine our understanding of how to utilize this coenzyme to its full potential, offering a brighter future for those seeking to preserve vitality and well-being as the years progress.

How to Cure Adrenal Fatigue At Home

how to cure adrenal fatigue

Did you know that stress can lead to adrenal fatigue? If you're constantly feeling worn down and your body can't keep up with everything that life throws at you, you may have adrenal fatigue.

The good news is, adrenal fatigue is treatable. Although it isn't always recognized by doctors and other medical professionals, it certainly is real. Here's what you need to know about it and how to cure adrenal fatigue.

What Is Adrenal Fatigue?

Your adrenal glands are responsible for creating and maintaining cortisol. Without cortisol, the body can find it extremely difficult to deal with stress. However, if you're constantly dealing with chronic stress, your adrenal glands may begin to malfunction.

The consistent need for cortisol due to heavy stress levels can lead to damaging your adrenal glands. Without properly working adrenal glands, it's likely you'll suffer from adrenal fatigue. One of the most difficult things about adrenal fatigue is diagnosing it.

Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue

The symptoms of adrenal fatigue can be very general. They're often symptoms you would associate with other illnesses or general day-to-day wear and tear. Some of these symptoms include:

  • Tiredness and struggling to get up in the morning
  • Insomnia or difficulty falling asleep
  • Difficulty concentrating, especially during the afternoon
  • Anxiety and/or depression
  • Mood swings
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Weight gain/loss
  • Hair loss
  • Lightheadedness

The Cause of Adrenal Fatigue

As mentioned above, adrenal fatigue happens after high levels of stress. However, it usually doesn't happen unless you're exposed to high levels of stress over a long period of time.

You may be more susceptible to the effects of stress if you have a poor diet, poor sleeping habits or you rarely exercise. You may also experience adrenal fatigue if you've been working too hard or you've recently experienced emotional trauma.

If you're unsure whether you have adrenal fatigue, it is possible to get a test. A functional doctor will be able to test your cortisol levels and give you an indication of whether they're low.

Treating Adrenal Fatigue

The best way to treat adrenal fatigue is to manage your stress levels. You can never totally avoid stress but you can learn techniques that will help you to manage it. Here are a few home DIY adrenal fatigue cures.

Dietary Changes

Making some simple dietary changes can have a dramatic effect on how your body and mind manage stress. For example, cutting out refined sugar, caffeine and alcohol can allow your body to function at its best.

Avoid snacking or energy drinks throughout the day when you feel you're losing energy. Instead, try switching to anti-oxidant-rich veggies with hummus. It may be less appealing but you'll certainly feel much better.

If you're unable to get the vitamins and nutrients you need from your diet, you could try taking supplements. Take a look at this product for rebuilding your adrenal glands.

Create a Sleep Routine

Sleep is extremely important when you're trying to lower your stress levels. The more sleep you have, the better equipped you are to handle stressful situations. It's easier to lose your patience when you're tired.

You can create a peaceful sleep routine by getting used to doing certain things. For example, not looking at computer, tablet or phone screens for an hour before you sleep. Having a warm bath or burning lavender essential oil can also help you sleep well.

Cut Out Coffee

Cutting out coffee from your daily routine may seem a bit drastic but caffeine and cortisol don't mix well. If you drink caffeine occasionally, it could be even worse than drinking it daily. The same goes for tea and energy drinks, especially energy drinks due to potential additional stimulant content.

When you drink caffeine occasionally, it will spike your cortisol levels without your body becoming immune to the effects. When you drink it often, your body will become immune as far as cortisol is concerned but it will give you a temporary boost. It's likely you'll experience a low crash after every temporary boost.

Try Meditation

Life is so busy, it can be hard to concentrate on what really matters- your mental health. Stopping throughout the day to meditate is a great way to ensure your mental health stays well. Along with going a long way to giving you peace of mind, it can also help to normalize your cortisol levels.

The great thing about meditation is that it can be done anywhere, at any time. If you're commuting to work via the train, sitting at your desk, or even on the sofa at home, you can take five minutes out of your day to meditate.

Take Time Off

You're entitled to vacation time for a reason. It can be tempting to stay at work when you're busy and you're determined to reach your goals. However, you need vacation time to re-energize and unwind.

Taking time off can help you to re-evaluate your lifestyle and what's most important. The time you take to rest can de-stress your mind and your body, giving your adrenal glands a chance to stabilize and work properly.

How to Cure Adrenal Fatigue 101

If you're feeling low and you're wondering how to cure adrenal fatigue, it's quite simple. Be kind to yourself! With so many options available to us, sometimes it's easy to forget that we're not machines.

It's your responsibility to look after yourself and make changes when you're under a lot of stress. Health is wealth after all!

Don't let your stress pro-long enough that the result is adrenal fatigue. Take a look at some more great tips right here on our blog, for avoiding stress and keeping yourself as healthy as possible.

Metabolism is the Steering Wheel to Your Fitness Goal

It is indeed envious to find how some slim men and women eat like hungry hippos and yet never seem to have gained a pound. So, what makes them so lucky? Science says it’s their fast metabolism which keeps them from gaining those extra kilos. There are two basic ways of staying in shape. One is through dieting and other is increasing the rate of metabolism. Blissfully, following only some disciplined lifestyle and diet changes can give the metabolism and healthier run. It could be something as simple as spicing up your food with a few sprinkles of the fiery red pepper to boost metabolism.

Getting The Basics Right

The basal metabolic rate has been set by our genetics and only long-term diet and lifestyle changes can manifest the change that we wish to see in your body. The good news is that metabolism can be enhanced to achieve considerable weight loss. Regular exercise, healthy diet, and a well-hydrated body are the basic foundations of a healthy metabolic rate. Muscle boosting exercises are a great way to give the sluggish metabolism a kickstart. Things like not skipping breakfast, getting enough shut-eye in the night, snacking on carbs, protein, and fiber and keeping stress at bay help the metabolism run efficiently.

Sleep Well

Short sleep is one of the commonest causes of obesity. Not only does one become more prone to overeating and but less sleep also slows down metabolism. A research conducted by the University of Pennsylvania has shown how a group of sleep-restricted volunteers experienced a slower metabolic rate of 50-60 calories per day. The number only adds up over several sleepless nights and shoots up the appetite. This is what happened when the sleep-restricted volunteers began fueling up with 500 more calories every day. Getting 6 hours of sleep is utmost to fuel up metabolism.

Exercise Right

One primary secret of boosting metabolism is building muscle mass. Weight training can wake up the resting metabolism while increasing the muscle mass. Pilates, Yoga and different kinds of cardiovascular workouts all have been known to strengthen the core while the latter also ups the heart rate. The more muscle tissue you have the higher your metabolism will be all day long, even when you're sleeping!

Eat & Drink Wisely

Eating the same food every day slows the metabolic rate. Rotating different foods for each breakfast, lunch, and dinner offers the body unique combinations of nutrients, keeping the gut challenged. Besides, including metabolism boosting ingredients in foods and drinks is another good way. One potent ingredient that alters the gut bacteria and kick starts slow metabolism is Apple Cider vinegar. Drinking green tea is also highly beneficial for burning belly fat and upping metabolic rate. Drinking enough water is very important for good metabolism. 50 to 80 ounces of water is recommended every day.

Big Most To Massive Metabolism

While boosting metabolism does involve following simple rules and regimes but there is no quick way to get into shape or anything called a quick metabolic boost. Thankfully, there are tons of ways to increase metabolic rate that help you keep your fittest best.

The Cost & Health Benefits Of Green Tea

The benefits of green tea have been known for thousands of years. Green tea bags are considered food products while green tea with added herbs and green tea extract are considered dietary supplements. I would recommend at least 1-2 cups a day for increased metabolism and improved immune system. Green Tea Extract works similar to this but possibly to a lesser extent but it can be more convenient at times. (Don’t drink later than mid-afternoon or it may disturb your sleeping habits due to caffeine, unless drinking Decaf Green Tea). Green Tea has a very high concentration of antioxidants which help to positively stimulate your immune system to fight off sickness and excessive free radicals.

Green Tea also has a very high concentration of ECGC, as well as small-moderate amounts of caffeine, that significantly improve fat-burning. While Green Tea may not miraculously burn 10 lbs of fat overnight, it is an excellent addition to a fat loss diet and exercise regimen. Try substituting a cup or two of Green Tea instead of your coffee to improve overall health. Green tea extract is not as potent as the regular tea form so try to drink more instead. Bottoms up for better health and immune system!

Cost: A box of 20 tea bags will cost you around $4, you can usually get a much cheaper price if you buy store brand, unflavored, and/or in bulk. I’ve gotten 100 black tea or orange pekoe tea bags for $1 so there are definitely low enough prices out there for anyone’s price range. Green tea is usually slightly more expensive but you can get about 100 green tea bags for no more than $2 or $3. Green tea extract capsules are usually about $10 for 100 capsules but price may vary greatly depending on brand and what store you buy them. Overall, a great frugal and healthier way to get your caffeine fix!

New Year's Resolution: Body Fat Reduction & Metabolism Calculation

It's New Year's Resolution time yet again! For many of us, we will focus on getting healthier and reducing body fat (two goals that can certainly go hand and hand). For most people, it is beneficial to determine an organized baseline for initial measurements and implement a consistent and detailed record of progress. Determining body weight, body fat, metabolic rate, and other medical figures (cholesterol, blood pressure, triglycerides, insulin, etc) is a good first step.

When you are trying to lose or gain weight in a healthy manner, it is important to remember that there are many factors affecting bodyweight. Some of these variables include activity level, gender, age, height, weight, and obviously genetics. It is also good to keep in mind that a pound of fat is about 3,500 calories so to burn fat you must create enough of a caloric deficit through exercise and/or dieting. Utilize the Harris-Benedict Equation which uses your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and incorporates an activity factor to determine your total daily energy expenditure in calories The main factor omitted by the Harris-Benedict Equation is lean body mass. Leaner bodies typically need more calories than those with a higher body fat percentage. Because of this, the Harris-Benedict Equation will be very accurate in all but the very muscular (underestimating calorie requirements) and those with very high levels of body fat (overestimating calorie requirements). The first step is to calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR):

  1. Calculate Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR):

Standard BMR Formula
Women: BMR = 655 + ( 4.35 x weight in pounds ) + ( 4.7 x height in inches ) - ( 4.7 x age in years )
Men: BMR = 66 + ( 6.23 x weight in pounds ) +
( 12.7 x height in inches ) - ( 6.8 x age in year )

Metric BMR Formula
Women: BMR = 655 + ( 9.6 x weight in kilos ) + ( 1.8 x height in cm) – ( 4.7 x age in years )
Men: BMR = 66 + ( 13.7 x weight in kilos ) + ( 5 x height in cm ) –
( 6.8 x age in years )

2. Apply the Harris-Benedict Principle:
To determine your total daily calorie needs, multiply your BMR by the appropriate activity factor, as follows:
Sedentary: (little or no exercise): BMR x 1.2
Lightly Active: (light exercise 1-3 days/week): BMR x 1.375
Moderately Active: (moderate exercise 3-5 days/week): BMR x 1.55
Very Active: (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week):  BMR x 1.725
Extremely Active: (very hard exercise, double training): BMR x 1.9

(bmicalculator . net, 2010)

Please remember to just use this as a guideline and consult your physician before beginning a weight loss or fitness regimen. Best of luck with all of your New Year's Resolutions, and I hope Frugal Fitness can be a valuable resource for you! Remember that patience, hard work, and smart decisions are most important.

Get Active & Stay Active! Keep It Simple Fitness Basics

Start Moving

The World Health Organization says that 31 percent of people worldwide are physically inactive and that physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor of deaths in the world. The WHO recommends that individuals ages 18-64 should get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week along with healthy nutrition. This can include any type of physical activity, whether you’re hitting the gym, going on a nature walk, or riding your bike to work. As long as you’re moving, you can strengthen your body and reduce your risk of stroke, diabetes, cancer, depression, and other chronic conditions.

Step Up Your Exercise Routine

While performing any type of physical activity is a great place to start with your health, studies have shown that adding more exercise to your lifestyle can help reduce your risk of gaining weight, ultimately helping you avoid chronic conditions. In a 16-year follow-up of the Nurse’s Health Study II, researchers found that women who bicycled and walked briskly, compared to slow walking, gained less weight than those who didn’t bike. You may also want to incorporate strength training into your exercise routine as this has been shown to strengthen bone and muscle and to reduce chronic conditions like arthritis.

Limit Your Sedentary Time

Simply limiting your sedentary time could have positive impacts on your health. In fact, one study found that simply reducing sedentary activity may have a more beneficial impact on weight loss than targeting increased exercise since subjects in the reduced sedentary group viewed physical activity in a better light and ate less calories or ate a vegan diet. Another study by the Harvard School of Public Health found a significant correlation between sedentary lifestyles and type 2 diabetes. They suggest that you not only look toward increasing exercise activity but focus on decreasing sedentary activities.
