Frugal Healthy Recipe: Hot Cereal to Fight the Common Cold

Contributed By Helen Chin Lui

This is a hot cereal that promotes sweating to push out pathogens that have brought on by imbalance of   energy; in Chinese medicine those pathogens would be either be Cold or Heat and Wind energy.

Wind-Cold Energy Symptoms include chills, fever, headache, body ache, stuffy or runny nose, sneezing and coughing.

Wind-Heat Energy Symptoms include sore throat, red face and eyes, thirst, hot phlegm. If your condition includes a high fever (no chills), do not eat this cereal.

This cereal must be eaten hot to promote sweating. After eating, cover with a blanket and rest. You may eat this cereal as much as you want. Don’t forget to drink water to hydrate. After recovering from your cold, discontinue eating this cereal.

1/2 cup of sweet or brown rice
4 cups of water
1 tablespoon of grated ginger, skin on
5 stalks green onions (scallions) white part only with roots, finely chopped
1 tablespoon rice vinegar

In saucepan, add rice, water, and ginger. Cover and simmer for one hour (for brown rice add another 45 minutes of cooking time.) Dice scallion, separate the green from white parts (only the white part and roots are used.) After the one hour or 1.75 hours of cooking, add the chopped white stalk and roots of scallions to the cooking rice and simmer for another 30 minutes to an hour. Turn off the heat and add vinegar. Stir and let sit for for a minute or two. Season with salt or tamari if desired. It’s important to serve cereal hot.
