Boston Marathon: Pre-Race Positivity!

Contributed By Expert Runner Amanda Loudin, Creator of Miss Zippy

You may have surmised by now that I can be my own worst enemy when it comes to running. I can quickly talk myself out of confidence. My latest nemesis has been the weather forecast for Monday: most weather forecasts are now agreeing that the 80s, and even a record-setting 85 degrees, are quite possible.
Now, I’ve melted down in 10-milers that start at 7 a.m. in the summer. So this news, for a marathon that starts at 10:20, has me a bit freaked out.
However, back when I was injured and sought out the help of a sports psychiatrist, he pointed out to me that I had a choice in how I handled my injury. I could wallow in it and be bitter, or I could dust myself off and move forward. This was at the end of my injury, so I didn’t really get a chance to put his advice into practice. (Meaning, I wallowed. A ton.) But now I have a choice with Boston: A. Freak out and get depressed about the forecast, or B.Face it, embrace it, and make the most of the day.
My glass is half full.
I’m going with B. So here it is: It’s the freakin’ Boston Marathon. It may be hot, it may be tough, it may be slow. But I am lucky to be healthy enough to run it. The Wellesley crowds will still be there (maybe even louder given the warm weather!); the Citgo sign will still be there; my friends will still be there; I’ll still buy the
ugly coral
jacket. And I will celebrate afterward.
It’s going to be a great weekend and I can’t wait to get it started.
