Consume Extra Vitamin D During Winter!
There are plenty of reasons to make sure you are taking your daily Vitamin D, or to increase your amounts. First off, since most of us will have minimal exposure to the sun, our natural production of Vitamin D will be very low. Vitamin D is crucial for bone health, disease prevention, and optimal calcium absorption. All of us, especially women more susceptible to low bone density, should make sure we get in more dairy products, food fortified with extra Vitamin D, and perhaps even a Calcium + Vitamin D supplement. Low bone density can lead to osteopenia or even osteoporosis and broken bones. If you are unsure of your bone density, see if a bone scan is covered under your insurance. Check with your pharmacist or physician before adding in a Calcium or Vitamin D supplement.
