What Are Sugar Alcohols?

Sugar alcohols are used as sweeteners because they are thought to go through your digestive system remain intact, therefore not contributing any calories to your body. For this reason they are considered almost as sugar-free sweeteners because they do not have an effect on your caloric intake or blood sugar levels. Sugar alcohols are often used as sweeteners in foods and chewing gum, especially in Europe. Sugar alcohols have been known to cause stomach and digestive discomfort in some people, especially when consumed in large amounts. I also see a lot of sugar alcohols on protein bars that want to limit the amount of “impact carbs” while giving their bar a sweeter flavor. My opinion on sugar alcohols is to avoid consuming too much at once. I wouldn’t call them healthy but then again no artificial sweetener is really beneficial to your health.
