4 Community Resources Making Life Better For Neighborhoods

community resources improving neighborhoods support residents

Have you ever wanted to explore the many community services available in your local area? Surprisingly, many working people are often unaware that cities and towns offer local citizens dozens of ways to enhance their lifestyles. Options include free classes at public libraries, outdoor gyms, no-cost consumer debt counseling, parks, bicycle routes, walking trails, and more.

In most cases, there's no charge to take advantage of community-based services. If you are the kind of person who enjoys helping others, municipal governments offer you the chance to teach literacy lessons to adults, instruct new immigrants who want to learn basic English, and donate time to help the homeless. Whether you want to give or receive social services, check with local government agencies to see what is available. Here is a short review of the services most communities offer.

4 Community Resources That Help The Whole Neighborhood

1. Adult Literacy Classes

Free classes for adults who need help honing their literacy skills are one of the best parts of the entire community service scene. Too often, those who never got the chance to learn basic reading and writing are reluctant to pay for courses or sign up for them at private schools. No-cost courses at community centers help break down those barriers.

2. Parks And Trails

One of the main functions of most local governments is keeping local parks safe and clean. Many city parks feature recreation centers, gardens, small zoos, and historical museums. If you haven't used your town's parks, make it a point to get out and take a long walk on the trails, enjoy a picnic lunch on a lazy Sunday afternoon, fly kites with your children, or nap on a blanket under the late-day sun. Adding a bit of outdoor fun and relaxation to your lifestyle is an effective way to exercise on a budget, banish stress, and learn to appreciate the great outdoors.

3. Outdoor Gyms

One of the most valuable features of any community is an outdoor gym. Not only are these efficient exercise stations sturdy and weatherproof, but they fit well in just about any public space. You will find them in community gardens, near hospitals, in schoolyards, and workplaces. People of all ages appreciate outdoor fitness equipment that works to help keep them in shape and active any time of the day and anyplace they happen to be. For many, one of the unsung benefits of outdoor gyms is fresh air. Exercising in the open environment is a fun, healthful way to enjoy the great outdoors, sunlight, a cool natural breeze, and the pure joy of simply being in nature.

4. Consumer Counseling

For working adults who need help with budgeting, financial planning, avoiding the use of high-interest credit, or other money-related tasks, consumer counseling is the answer. Licensed professionals charge hourly fees, but community resource centers offer no-cost consultations to anyone who needs help. Some low-income working people seek guidance about budgeting for family expenses in a tough economy. Others want to learn how to eliminate debt and begin saving money out of every paycheck. Consumer counselors at municipal agencies offer assistance in every category and know how to get families back on the road to self-sufficiency.

Caring Community Conclusion

When people invest in the community, they get a very high return on investment. Community planners should keep these tips in mind to make the neighborhood a better place for all.

7 Eco-Friendly Ideas for a Sustainable Neighborhood

eco-friendly ideas sustainable neighborhood

If you want to make a difference to the planet, one of the best places to start is your own backyard. There’s plenty we can do to make our own homes and neighborhoods more eco-friendly.

With towns and cities facing major problems caused by pollution, littering, and climate change, there are plenty of issues that are negatively impacting the areas where we live. However, concerned citizens can make a huge difference.

To learn more, keep reading to find seven eco-friendly ways that you can create a more sustainable neighborhood for your children, friends, and family.

1. Start a Community Garden

A useful and fun element in sustainable neighborhood design is community gardens. Why not start one for your town?

A community garden can be started on any area of communal land, with volunteers taking turns to tend to the fruits or veggies that you plant. When the produce is ready to harvest, you could sell it at a local market, split among volunteers, or donate to vulnerable members of your community.

A garden is a delicious way to enjoy fresh, local produce, without needing to depend on big chain grocery stores, which often ship in produce from thousands of miles away. This is no good for the environment, as you want to eat local food as much as you can.

Gardening is also a fun way to teach kids about sustainability and nutrition.

2. Encourage Sustainable Transportation

Eco-friendly neighborhoods discourage residents from driving everywhere, as pollution is no good for the planet. Instead, encourage residents to take public transport, bike, walk, or drive electric vehicles.

If your town can afford it, installation vehicle charging spots in town is a huge incentive for people to ditch fuel for good. You can find out more about EV charging station costs here.

You can also lobby the town government to add more bike lanes or sidewalks, making it easier for people to get around safely.

3. Shop Local

An easy way to be more sustainable is to shop local and encourage others to do so. Supporting local businesses creates jobs, keeps money in the community, and helps the town thrive.

Many local businesses are forced to close down to chain shops coming to town, which can offer lower prices. However, this isn't always helpful for the community.

Why not organize a local business week, highlighting local businesses, restaurants, or services on social media? This can help residents discover exciting businesses that they can support.

4. Form an Environmental Committee

To help advocate for sustainability in your town, think about starting an environmental committee. A group of passionate citizens can come together to work with local or state government, helping to get funding for new initiatives.

There are also plenty of free ways the committee can help encourage green choices, such as helping with e-recycling days for electronic waste or free workshops to teach kids about the environment.

There’s power in numbers, so a committee can often achieve much more than an individual can do on their own.

5. Create More Green Spaces

Your neighborhood is sure to benefit from increased green spaces. Green areas, like playgrounds and parks, can have a huge impact on your town.

They protect biodiversity, improve air quality, reduce noise pollution, and can even help mitigate extreme weather events like heatwaves and flooding.

If there are any other run-down or abandoned parks in your town, grab some volunteers and bring them back to life! Everyone in the community can appreciate green spaces, especially those who live in apartments with limited access to gardens and fresh air.

Encourage your residents to spend more time enjoying the outdoors by developing more green spaces, if you can.

6. Organize a Clean-Up Day

Eco-friendly neighborhoods can organize a neighborhood clean-up day to keep their community looking its best. Trash is no good for the environment, as it can often end up in streams, backyards, or wildlife habitats.

Plan a Saturday morning where everyone can come together for a few hours, picking up trash from parks or local areas. Then, sort out the recycling and make sure everything is disposed of properly.

It can be a fun and meaningful way to spend time with your neighbors and also help keep your community cleaner. Just be sure to thank your volunteers after with coffee and donuts!

7. Set Up Public Recycling Stations

Have you ever walked through a city and ended up throwing a recyclable item in the trash because there were no public recycling facilities available? Unfortunately, it happens often and means that lots of recyclable items don’t get recycled.

Talk to your town government about installing public recycling bins, which will encourage people to recycle more. Just make it clear which can is for trash and which is for recycling, so people choose correctly.

While there will be a small cost to the town to make the changes, it will make a huge difference over time when it comes to sustainability.

Start a Sustainable Neighborhood Today

If you want to live in a greener, healthier town, there’s plenty you can do! Use the ideas above to think about how you can create a more sustainable neighborhood.

With the help of friends and neighbors, work together to make the changes you want to see. It may take some time, but the result is a community that’s biodiverse, clean, and sustainable.

Get started today and be the catalyst for change that your community needs!

Kickoff Post For #SurviveOn35! Thrive On $35 Weekly Food Budget

Frugal Fitness Fans this is it, time to flex my frugal food budgeting muscle! Today is day 1 of the #SurviveOn35 challenge to live healthy with no more than $35 worth of food, the same amount as government assistance / food stamps. Now I don't have much money, and I haven't for many years now (which is why I started Frugal Fitness and wrote The Frugal Diet in the first place), so this is nothing new for me. I've always had to make the best of a tiny budget and nutrition hasn't been any different. While it is difficult and limiting in many ways, eating healthy on a meager budget is possible and I'm off to a great start! I did all my shopping yesterday and got more than enough for the long week of chowing down in thrifty fashion.

I think it is a great idea that can educate a lot of people, show off some great products, and also this challenge helps to raise money for the impoverished through the contest sponsors, ANYTIME FITNESS and their founder Chuck Runyon, who recently helped many charitable organizations while appearing on Secret Millionaire. I'm up against stiff competition, but I love this kind of stuff and I've already had a tasty day of cheap eats! This really means a lot to me and I know it can help a lot of people.

Fight Cancer, Help TEAM FIGHT!

Contributed By Amanda Loudin, Author / Owner of Miss Zippy
A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that I’m doing two triathlons this season, one as part of Team Fight, which benefits the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. I’d support this organization no matter what, because it is a fantastic one, focusing on a demographic that is often left without the proper resources when faced with cancer. But I also have personal reasons for joining this fight.
I told you in a post late last February that I lost my brother-in-law Dale to cancer. He had just turned 44 and was a father to four, a husband, a son, a brother. He was the nicest of the nice guys and it still breaks my heart to think of what he went through the last three years of his life. Cancer robbed him of his quality of life on so many fronts. I watched his downward spiral as the disease found new ways to attack him until ultimately, it won.
Dale was lucky in that he had a big support system. When he became too sick to hold a job, he and his family were ok thanks to his amazing wife who somehow managed to do it all during this impossible time. He also had the emotional support that he needed from friends and family. But I know many others young people facing cancer aren’t as lucky. That’s where the Ulman Fund fills in the blanks.

So now I want to help Ulman help those that don’t have the support system Dale had. And I need your help with this, too. Here’s the deal: For every $10 you donate to Team Fight, you’ll get an entry to a raffle to win this amazing collection of goodies. All of this was donated for this cause specifically by some of the great product partners I’ve worked with over the years. Check it out:
From my favorite women’s clothing maker, Oiselle, two t-shirts.
From Outside PR, a boatload of GU products, three pairs of Injinji socks, and a coupon for a RoadID.
From Chickbands, a set of four headbands.
From Bill Katovsky, the book 1,001 Pearls of Runners’ Wisdom.
I think you’ll agree, this is a pretty sweet package of goods. Don’t miss out on a chance to win it–go HERE and make a donation. Team Fight would love to have you on board and so would I. Thanks in advance.
