As you'll see in this video, I am making my main goal to run my fastest 5k time in the last DECADE! (and ideally under 21 minutes, that's under 7 minute mile pace!)

EPIC PREMIER PROTEIN VIDEO! FRUGAL FITNESS TV FOR THE WIN!

So not only am I challenging myself and all of you to step things up a notch, I'm also supporting a great cause (cancer research that this specific race is raising money for, please donate or join me by visiting the link at the end of this post), but also giving away some incredible prizes over the next 3 months! Each month, including this one, comment on the video and leave your biggest health and fitness goal (and ideally your motivating factors, experience, obstacles, etc), and immediately be entered free for incredible prize packs of Tons of Premier Protein Shakes, Bars, Cool Shwag, and $200!! 3 very lucky winners each month!!! All the great stuff you could want to help keep your fitness nice and frugal, and to help you reach or exceed your goals!

I've got my work cut out for me to reach my goal. I know personally that I need to increase my running frequency, distances, and most importantly speed. I need to reduce my bodyfat (less weighing me down) and also transition a bit away from bodybuilding and powerlifting style workouts to more endurance and cross-training type lifting workouts. Nutritionally it also means lots of lean protein (sans extra carbs and fats), so BOOM that's where the Premier Protein comes in for me. I know it's going to be rough though training in the cold New England winter, and blocking off time while I'm working Full Time and running a large and complex fitness business. Watch the video above, Subscribe To Frugal Fitness TV, Like & Follow Premier Protein on Facebook and Twitter, Enter The Contest, and Check Back next month for a new video and an update on my progress!

October Unprocessed Nutritional Health Challenge

Contributed By Christie O, Author of Average Moms Wear Capes

Unprocessed Foods – For All of October? Can You Do It?

By now you already know about Squat-toberfest 2012, my own challenge to see how many squats can be done in October (I’m up to 40 today!), but this nutritional challenge I stumbled upon in my travels is just too important for me to pass up. And honestly? It’s easier than you might think.
I met Andrew at the Fitness & Health Blogger’s Conferencein June and he told me about how he’s doing a challenge in October called #Unprocessed, challenging people to eat only unprocessed foods, and I was all about that. Do you know that after we eliminated things like artificial coloring and preservatives, my son’s tic is gone by the way? True story. It seemed daunting at the time to eliminate so many of our staples, but it’s been good for all of us. I have learned SO MUCH about what’s really in our food (and yes, I do think we should be scared.)
REAL FOOD or as close as I can get to it, is the way to go for us. Not for now, for ever.
Wait. Whoa there, Sparky. What exactly is the definition of “unprocessed” anyway? Spinach? Are you telling us we can only eat SPINACH?
No! And I’m glad you asked. Andrew’s definition of unprocessed is anything that a person can (reasonably and technically) make in a kitchen. Whether or not you actually have the tools to churn butter is irrelevant, technically you could churn your own butter. You couldn’t, probably however, make Smart Balance by yourself. So that would be off the list. From Andrew’s blog, “Eating Rules:”
“I call it ‘The Kitchen Test.’ If you pick up something with a label (if it doesn’t have a label, it’s probably unprocessed), and find an ingredient you’d never use in your kitchen and couldn’t possibly make yourself from the whole form, it’s processed.
It doesn’t mean you actually have to make it yourself, it just means that for it to be considered ‘unprocessed’ that you could, in theory, do so.”
See?
So I read the list of the most popular foods that are on and off the unprocessed list and how exactly Andrew defines “unprocessed” (mostly because I got scared about the cheese because I love the cheese) and I actually got excited as I read it. (After all, technically you can make beer at home.)
So it’s not as hard as you might think. You just have to look at the ingredients carefully. Which to be honest, in every sense of the word, we should all be doing anyway.
This obviously takes some time however, if you’re just starting out, and I admit I have a bit of a head start because I’ve already spent my hours and hours researching ingredients and Googling from the grocery store and have, after all that, come up with my final list of “staples,” many of which are on the list. Many of which blur the lines, however, aren’t. Like my hazelnut flavored coffee. Meh. Or the white granulated sugar you put in it.
So it will take some sacrifice on my part and some tradeoffs. Perhaps tea with honey instead. Or plain coffee with sugar in its raw form. Which is probably better for me anyway.
So this challenge for me will take a little tweaking. The good news is, I’ve done the homework FOR YOU, so I can share my knowledge with you!
This challenge for me is about REALLY getting back to basics.
The really cool thing about this challenge is what McCormick mentioned at the tour I went on last week, which is that there is a movement across the world of people eating cleaner. People are beginning to realize the harm in processed foods and are beginning to revolt, one pantry at a time. It’s true! (Note: never ever forget the “r” in pantry like I almost did.)
I see the movement happening here in this challenge too as almost 4,000 people have signed up to take Andrew’s Oath of Unprocessed already in some shape or form, whether it’s for a day or for the entire month. It’s even making some news.
For me, eating cleaner and more unprocessed foods means starting with the health of my own family. But the more other people begin to take notice and revolt about the types of food that are available and the types of food we’re eating, the more that awful things like genetically modified corn in our cereals (which causes tumors) and chemicals, preservatives and colorings will not be ok or acceptable. Ever.
Taking my pantry back has been my way of saying NO MORE. And yes, my son’s tic is gone! (Coincidence? Perhaps! But I don’t think so…)
They eat their vegetables (and like them!) And we all actually very much feel better as we go about our daily lives.
So I’m going to take this challenge and I’m going to be crazy here and shoot for the month (because even if I miss, I’ll be among the stars!) I view it as my way of going just a little further with unprocessed and really getting back to good, real food.
I’d love it if you’d join, in any capacity you want! You can modify your definition of “unprocessed” or you can use Andrew’s definition, the trick is that the choices you make should be deliberate and not just “because you want that cookie” in the heat of the moment. You decide how it can work for you.
You can also choose how long you want to go, a day, week or the whole month, it’s all up to you!
Here are my deliberate exclusions:
  • I’m still looking for non-chemical post-recovery drink. Until then, I’m using the protein shakes I have.
  • Dinner at a relative’s house.
Challenges ahead: Any restaurant eating. *sigh* Looks like I’ll be saving money this month too!
Read more about Unprocessed October and take the pledge!
You can guess what my recipes will be centered around on Saturdays! That’s right, real food! This weekend I have a video recipe coming! So if you’re wondering what kind of breakfasts, dinners or snacks you can make, I’ll show you my staples and share my favorite recipes and you can share yours too!

Kickoff Post For #SurviveOn35! Thrive On $35 Weekly Food Budget

Frugal Fitness Fans this is it, time to flex my frugal food budgeting muscle! Today is day 1 of the #SurviveOn35 challenge to live healthy with no more than $35 worth of food, the same amount as government assistance / food stamps. Now I don't have much money, and I haven't for many years now (which is why I started Frugal Fitness and wrote The Frugal Diet in the first place), so this is nothing new for me. I've always had to make the best of a tiny budget and nutrition hasn't been any different. While it is difficult and limiting in many ways, eating healthy on a meager budget is possible and I'm off to a great start! I did all my shopping yesterday and got more than enough for the long week of chowing down in thrifty fashion.

I think it is a great idea that can educate a lot of people, show off some great products, and also this challenge helps to raise money for the impoverished through the contest sponsors, ANYTIME FITNESS and their founder Chuck Runyon, who recently helped many charitable organizations while appearing on Secret Millionaire. I'm up against stiff competition, but I love this kind of stuff and I've already had a tasty day of cheap eats! This really means a lot to me and I know it can help a lot of people.

Also, please donate to the Cooking Matters organization!

For More Information On The Contest, Check Out The Full Article By ANYTIME FITNESS!

I will give you a preview, and you will see if you check out my Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, that I shopped at Target, Dollar Tree, and Stop & Shop for all my items. I came out with about 40 cents left to spare too and I should even have a bit of leftovers of some items. What items did I by, what meals do I make, and how full does my stomach (and muscles) stay?  You will have to follow along and see for yourself! I'll be posting pictures of everything through Tuesday 7/25, Posting a detailed wrap-up on 7/26, and participating in a Twitter Chat on #SurviveOn35 that night answering all of your questions!

Also, please donate to the Cooking Matters organization!

Frugal Fitness Review Giveaway BreathSlim Weight Loss

Hey Frugal Fitness Fans! I have always been a little lacking in the proper breathing department and it has always been detrimental to my health and fitness results. I can get into a good breathing pattern when I am jogging, focusing during a tough set of weights, or when I am trying to lay down and take a nap. Other than that though, I've always had the habit of holding my breath or other poor breathing habits, which can raise blood pressure, stress, and reduce oxygen to the brain and muscles. I also haven't been much of a yoga or pilates guy over the years. It can also reduce my body's ability to burn fat and improve my overall metabolism. So that's why I really wanted to give the BreathSlim All Natural Weight Loss Device a try and the more I thought about it and used it, the more I was impressed with the system and the benefits.

The BreathSlim device, which I use just a short time each day, helped and continues to help me improve my breathing techniques that needs a lot of work. I've noticed some improved lung capacity, cardiovascular endurance, stress relief (always important for mental health and reducing excess cortisol levels), and improved fat loss. I've definitely been feeling more relaxed (I am usually a pretty high stress person) and looking leaner in just a short amount of time. If you are looking to improve lung capacity, cardiovascular health / performance, stress relief, and fat loss through improved oxygenation and reduced cortisol levels, you got to get one for yourself. If you are skeptical, you will have to do your own research and give it a shot before you knock it! I'm a fan!!

Virtual Run Across America FundRaiser!

Contributed by Amanda Loudin of MissZippy1 and on Twitter @MissZippy1 & Facebook

Join the fun!
A few weeks back I told you about the Rev3/Ulman Cancer Fund Virtual Run Across America. Well, let’s make that a virtual and REAL run across America, ’cause several people are doing just that, right now. They are studs for a fantastic cause. From March 26 through April 16, they’re making their way from California to D.C.
After I posted about this run, I had several folks ask if I was joining a virtual run team as well. In fact, I am double dipping–I’m on two teams. The first is TeamDavis, which is spearheaded by blogger Harmony. She’s got her own personal reasons for wanting to kick cancer to the curb. And she’s running from Oceanside, Calif. to Phoenix while we run along virtually with her.
The second team is made up of a bunch of my local running pals (and one across the ocean in Norway). Together we’re piling up our miles in support of the Ulman Fund, which happens to be based right here in our town.
How can you pitch in? Glad you asked. You can help either of my teams rack up the points by making a donation. The two teams are Team Davis and Team Run For Your Life–take your pick. This is an awesome opportunity to help young adults fighting cancer. Thanking you in advance for any donation you make!

SuperBowl Fitness & Running Challenge!

Contributed by Samantha Zeigler Author of Running and Cupcakes

Oh yeah baby – my beloved Patriots have yet again been led to the SuperBowl by their esteemed leader, Tom Brady.
giants-vs-patriots-superbowl-cartoon-598x467
Source
Okay so that’s a bit much considering he really played like sh!t on Sunday, but I digress…
As a New Englander, I LOATHE all things New York sports (Yankees, Knicks, Giants, Jets, you name it…) – so when I was approached by one of my favorite new friends, Michele from NYC Running Mama about co-hosting a Superbowl Challenge – much like the one she and Pavement Runner hosted last week – I was ALL over it.
Side note: Michele, those three miles I owe you from the Giants/49ers game will be run tomorrow! I never back down from a bet.
Here’s is how this is going to go down (obviously copied almost verbatim from Michele’s blog post about the same thing…):
We are runners.  Distance runners.  So the loser will be running.
But this isn’t just limited to us – we’d love to have more runners join us in this friendly competition!!
Rules of this challenge (same rules as the previous challenge!):
If your team loses, you have to run the point differential in miles. Simple. For example, when the Giants beat the Patriots (for the 2nd time in 4 years)Patriots beat the Giants (because payback’s a bitch…yo…) 24-4, Michele and anyone else who is rooting for the Giants will have to run 20 miles. (Here’s where you hope you’re a Patriots fan).
Mile limit: In the occurrence that the Giants blow out the Patriots (not likely to happen), we’ve capped the miles to 20 — meaning the most either of us would run is 20 miles. This works for us because we have a solid base and can log the distance. If this mileage is too high for you based on your current training, feel free to cap it at 10 – or whatever distance you feel comfortable!
To be run by: Within a week of the game sounds fair, but outstanding circumstances are understood.
Prove it: Tweet out a photo of your garmin in shame… LOL.
You don’t need to challenge an individual, just make an agreement with yourself to run the difference after you pick a team. If you couldn’t care less about stupid football, but are forced to watch the game, at least you’ll have something to root for.
So tell us…
Are you participating in this running wager?  (to sign up, COMMENT HERE)
Which team are you rooting for???
P.S. Michele is a bad bad person and posted a bad bad video of highlights from Superbowl 43 – I refuse to do that. (And of course I’m kidding about her being a bad bad person – she’s a sweetheart and awesome).
