4 Community Resources Making Life Better For Neighborhoods

community resources improving neighborhoods support residents

Have you ever wanted to explore the many community services available in your local area? Surprisingly, many working people are often unaware that cities and towns offer local citizens dozens of ways to enhance their lifestyles. Options include free classes at public libraries, outdoor gyms, no-cost consumer debt counseling, parks, bicycle routes, walking trails, and more.

In most cases, there's no charge to take advantage of community-based services. If you are the kind of person who enjoys helping others, municipal governments offer you the chance to teach literacy lessons to adults, instruct new immigrants who want to learn basic English, and donate time to help the homeless. Whether you want to give or receive social services, check with local government agencies to see what is available. Here is a short review of the services most communities offer.

4 Community Resources That Help The Whole Neighborhood

1. Adult Literacy Classes

Free classes for adults who need help honing their literacy skills are one of the best parts of the entire community service scene. Too often, those who never got the chance to learn basic reading and writing are reluctant to pay for courses or sign up for them at private schools. No-cost courses at community centers help break down those barriers.

2. Parks And Trails

One of the main functions of most local governments is keeping local parks safe and clean. Many city parks feature recreation centers, gardens, small zoos, and historical museums. If you haven't used your town's parks, make it a point to get out and take a long walk on the trails, enjoy a picnic lunch on a lazy Sunday afternoon, fly kites with your children, or nap on a blanket under the late-day sun. Adding a bit of outdoor fun and relaxation to your lifestyle is an effective way to exercise on a budget, banish stress, and learn to appreciate the great outdoors.

3. Outdoor Gyms

One of the most valuable features of any community is an outdoor gym. Not only are these efficient exercise stations sturdy and weatherproof, but they fit well in just about any public space. You will find them in community gardens, near hospitals, in schoolyards, and workplaces. People of all ages appreciate outdoor fitness equipment that works to help keep them in shape and active any time of the day and anyplace they happen to be. For many, one of the unsung benefits of outdoor gyms is fresh air. Exercising in the open environment is a fun, healthful way to enjoy the great outdoors, sunlight, a cool natural breeze, and the pure joy of simply being in nature.

4. Consumer Counseling

For working adults who need help with budgeting, financial planning, avoiding the use of high-interest credit, or other money-related tasks, consumer counseling is the answer. Licensed professionals charge hourly fees, but community resource centers offer no-cost consultations to anyone who needs help. Some low-income working people seek guidance about budgeting for family expenses in a tough economy. Others want to learn how to eliminate debt and begin saving money out of every paycheck. Consumer counselors at municipal agencies offer assistance in every category and know how to get families back on the road to self-sufficiency.

Caring Community Conclusion

When people invest in the community, they get a very high return on investment. Community planners should keep these tips in mind to make the neighborhood a better place for all.

Kickoff Post For #SurviveOn35! Thrive On $35 Weekly Food Budget

Frugal Fitness Fans this is it, time to flex my frugal food budgeting muscle! Today is day 1 of the #SurviveOn35 challenge to live healthy with no more than $35 worth of food, the same amount as government assistance / food stamps. Now I don't have much money, and I haven't for many years now (which is why I started Frugal Fitness and wrote The Frugal Diet in the first place), so this is nothing new for me. I've always had to make the best of a tiny budget and nutrition hasn't been any different. While it is difficult and limiting in many ways, eating healthy on a meager budget is possible and I'm off to a great start! I did all my shopping yesterday and got more than enough for the long week of chowing down in thrifty fashion.

I think it is a great idea that can educate a lot of people, show off some great products, and also this challenge helps to raise money for the impoverished through the contest sponsors, ANYTIME FITNESS and their founder Chuck Runyon, who recently helped many charitable organizations while appearing on Secret Millionaire. I'm up against stiff competition, but I love this kind of stuff and I've already had a tasty day of cheap eats! This really means a lot to me and I know it can help a lot of people.

Also, please donate to the Cooking Matters organization!

For More Information On The Contest, Check Out The Full Article By ANYTIME FITNESS!

I will give you a preview, and you will see if you check out my Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, that I shopped at Target, Dollar Tree, and Stop & Shop for all my items. I came out with about 40 cents left to spare too and I should even have a bit of leftovers of some items. What items did I by, what meals do I make, and how full does my stomach (and muscles) stay?  You will have to follow along and see for yourself! I'll be posting pictures of everything through Tuesday 7/25, Posting a detailed wrap-up on 7/26, and participating in a Twitter Chat on #SurviveOn35 that night answering all of your questions!

Also, please donate to the Cooking Matters organization!

Fight Cancer, Help TEAM FIGHT!

Contributed By Amanda Loudin, Author / Owner of Miss Zippy
A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that I’m doing two triathlons this season, one as part of Team Fight, which benefits the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. I’d support this organization no matter what, because it is a fantastic one, focusing on a demographic that is often left without the proper resources when faced with cancer. But I also have personal reasons for joining this fight.
I told you in a post late last February that I lost my brother-in-law Dale to cancer. He had just turned 44 and was a father to four, a husband, a son, a brother. He was the nicest of the nice guys and it still breaks my heart to think of what he went through the last three years of his life. Cancer robbed him of his quality of life on so many fronts. I watched his downward spiral as the disease found new ways to attack him until ultimately, it won.
Dale was lucky in that he had a big support system. When he became too sick to hold a job, he and his family were ok thanks to his amazing wife who somehow managed to do it all during this impossible time. He also had the emotional support that he needed from friends and family. But I know many others young people facing cancer aren’t as lucky. That’s where the Ulman Fund fills in the blanks.

So now I want to help Ulman help those that don’t have the support system Dale had. And I need your help with this, too. Here’s the deal: For every $10 you donate to Team Fight, you’ll get an entry to a raffle to win this amazing collection of goodies. All of this was donated for this cause specifically by some of the great product partners I’ve worked with over the years. Check it out:
From my favorite women’s clothing maker, Oiselle, two t-shirts.
From Outside PR, a boatload of GU products, three pairs of Injinji socks, and a coupon for a RoadID.
From Chickbands, a set of four headbands.
From Bill Katovsky, the book 1,001 Pearls of Runners’ Wisdom.
I think you’ll agree, this is a pretty sweet package of goods. Don’t miss out on a chance to win it–go HERE and make a donation. Team Fight would love to have you on board and so would I. Thanks in advance.

Virtual Run Across America FundRaiser!

Contributed by Amanda Loudin of MissZippy1 and on Twitter @MissZippy1 & Facebook

Join the fun!
A few weeks back I told you about the Rev3/Ulman Cancer Fund Virtual Run Across America. Well, let’s make that a virtual and REAL run across America, ’cause several people are doing just that, right now. They are studs for a fantastic cause. From March 26 through April 16, they’re making their way from California to D.C.
After I posted about this run, I had several folks ask if I was joining a virtual run team as well. In fact, I am double dipping–I’m on two teams. The first is TeamDavis, which is spearheaded by blogger Harmony. She’s got her own personal reasons for wanting to kick cancer to the curb. And she’s running from Oceanside, Calif. to Phoenix while we run along virtually with her.
The second team is made up of a bunch of my local running pals (and one across the ocean in Norway). Together we’re piling up our miles in support of the Ulman Fund, which happens to be based right here in our town.
How can you pitch in? Glad you asked. You can help either of my teams rack up the points by making a donation. The two teams are Team Davis and Team Run For Your Life–take your pick. This is an awesome opportunity to help young adults fighting cancer. Thanking you in advance for any donation you make!

Virtual Run For Cancer Fundraising!

Contributed by Amanda Loudin of MissZippy1
You can also find her on Twitter @MissZippy1 and on Facebook
This past week, I lost my brother-in-law Dale to cancer. He was only 44 years old, and was a husband, father to four kids, brother, son, friend–he was so much to so many people. His loss leaves a hole in my inlaws’ hearts that will never be repaired.
Cancer sucks, plain and simple. I know I am not alone in having suffered loss to this horrible disease. Which is why I want to encourage all of you to consider being a part of the Rev3 Virtual Run Across America that begins on March 26. The run serves as a fundraiser to the Ulman Cancer Fund, an organization right here in my town that is designed to help young people living with the disease. This is a population that often falls through the cracks when it comes to support services for cancer, and the Ulman Fund picks up those pieces.

Cancer survivor Jessica Protasio
A great example of how Ulman works is Jessica Protasio, a 28-year old survivor of liver cancer. When she was diagnosed two years back, Jessica had recently lost both parents and was therefore missing what would have been a big part of her support structure. After diagnosis, she was put in contact with Ulman and the organization gave her support through surgeries, a liver transplant, treatment, and more. With a heavy focus on healthy living through its Team Fight, Ulman also turned Jessica on to running. Today she is a survivor, an athlete, and an incredible inspiration to anyone who has the chance to meet her. You can read more about her story here.
For me, hearing stories like Jessica’s helps a bit with the pain of loss. Knowing that people do beat this disease and go on to thrive is a great feeling. The virtual run across America gives us all a way to channel the pain of loss and dealing with a disease like cancer into something positive.
I encourage each of you to consider getting on board with this run. The run is centered around teams of runners, each kicking in miles and/or donations. Here’s how it will go down:
Every day from March 26- April 16, 2012 a select member from you team will e-mail miles@rev3tri.com and report your clubs total miles for the day.
  • Each member of your club/team can log as many miles as they want over the 21 days.
  • On April 16th your clubs total miles will be added up and then divided by the number of participants of your club to give you an average miles per person. That average will be your overall points.
  • You will also be given points for fundraising. Rev3 Tri has a donation page at:  www.rev3tri.com/america/donate.  Member of your club/friends/family ANYONE can donate in your clubs name.
  • On April 16th all donations in support of your club will be totaled and divided by the total number of athletes in your club, it will then by multiplied by two. Donating = more points than running!
    • For example if you have 100 members of your club participating and you run a total of 500 miles in the given time, you will receive 5 points for miles ran. If you fundraised $3,000 for your 100 member club you will have an average of $30 per person multiplied by 2 giving you $60 per person. 5+60= 65 total points.
  • On April 16th your overall mileage and total fundraising will be added together for a grand total, whichever team has the highest number will be the winner.

Team Red White & Blue Military Veteran Assistance Program

Contributed by Michele Gonzalez,  wife, mother, ultrarunner, and FitFluential Ambassador. A former Captain in the US Army, she is now a stay at home mom who is currently training for a sub 3:10 marathon and her first Ironman (NYC – Aug 2012). Her blog, NYCrunningmama, focuses on her training/races, as well as pregnancy  & motherhood. To learn more about Michele, follow her on Twitter or Facebook.

A little background…
US troop fatalities in combat decreased by more than 15% from 2010 to 2011 (437 to 368).  At first glance this statistic sounds promising, however, if you do a little more research you’ll learn that while the number of US deaths have decreased, the number of amputees have risen by a staggering 22% from 2010 to 2011 (205 vs 240) and is more than 17% higher than the previous all-time high in 2007 (205).
(I won’t go into detail as to why the number of amputees are increasing at an alarming rate, but if you would like to learn more, you should read this article)

Why am I putting up all these statistics?
Do you ever wonder what happens to all of the veterans when they return from Iraq or Afghanistan missing one or two legs and/or one or both of their arms?  Or to those vets who return with “invisible injuries” – post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or mild-traumatic brain injury (TBI)?  Immediately upon their return, they receive amazing around-the-clock medical care from fantastic military hospitals.  But then what happens?  Continuing their career in the military is a longshot (amputees are typically medically discharged).  Some return to their hometown. Others stay close to Army or Navy bases.  But ALL need to start their lives over – trying to live a normal life – while learning how to survive/cope with one or more major limbs missing from their body or with whatever serious injury the war dealt them.
Enter Team Red, White & Blue - a nonprofit organization whose vision is to transform the way wounded veterans are reintegrated into society when they return from combat and exit their position.  Although Team RWB is a fairly new organization, it is growing by leaps and bounds with members all over the U.S. and beyond participating in everything from long-distance running events to triathlons.

Major Mike Erwin, a West Point Grad and three-time veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, founded Team RWB in 2010 as a way to ease the transition by offering wounded vets everything from daily phone calls to baby-sitting help and job-placement assistance.  The organization matches civilians with wounded vets transitioning from military to civilian life.  ”We’re connecting people who want to say thank you to a veteran beyond just writing a check,” says Erwin. [source: Runner's World]

The team relies on runners and triathletes to help spread the word and raise funds. Last year, 3,000 athletes raised more than $400,000 for Team RWB by competing in everything from 5-Ks to ultras. Ultimately, Erwin wants to get more vets running. “It’s the most under-prescribed medication,” he says. For vets with traumatic brain injury and PTSD especially, running can rebuild them psychologically and socially, he says. “It’s that powerful a tool.” [source:Runner's World]

There are MANY ways to get involved with this amazing organization. You can sign up to be a athlete and fundraise for the program.  You can volunteer to be an advocate to offer your time to enrich the life of a wounded veteran and his/her family. You can donate to the organization (all donations are tax-deductible).  You can wear the eagle and help spread the word about this charity (more clothes and accessories coming soon!)
