Many people in this world can live a life of moderation and balance without any problem. But for hundreds of millions of people in the world, addiction to at least one thing can be a destructive force in their lives and the ones they love. Addictions of all types destroy lives, families, and communities. For these people, myself included, sobriety is the only long-term healthy solution. Sobriety, sober living, and addiction recovery programs give people a second chance for a happier and healthier life.
Whether you get sober on your own, through a 12-step process, with a doctor, or at a rehabilitation facility, what really matters is maintaining your clean living and having a good quality of life while being sober. It is hard enough to break an addiction and get sober, and even harder sometimes to stay clean long-term.
Sobriety means different things to different people. For some it just means abstaining from alcohol and hard drugs. For others it's also being free of medication (not recommended by most medical professionals) and being free of synthetic hormones (unless recommended by medical professionals). For others still it might mean not smoking cigarettes, not vaping, no CBD oil, and not drinking caffeine. Some people don't even consider themselves or you sober if cold or cough medicine, vanilla extract, or Listerine is in the house. And for others it might mean abstaining from gambling, sex, pornography, binge eating, chocolate, video games, smartphones, work, or any other number of potential addictions. Everyone is different.
Your sobriety is something that you and a sponsor and/or a medical professional should decide on together and it could evolve over time. Everyone's definition of sobriety is different and everyone will have a different experience living sober.
I'm not one to judge and neither should anyone else for that matter. I am merely an alcoholic in recovery with over 7 years of sobriety (one day at a time) after over 8 years of binge drinking and minor drug use. I quit on my own cold turkey but needed a 12-step program and community to help keep me from relapsing or being more than just a dry drunk. Working out, eating healthy, and eventually quitting caffeine also helped me a great deal. It has been a difficult but rewarding journey with a lot of personal growth and a second chance at life. But there are countless stories with a variety of solutions that work for various people. Your history of drinking or using and treatment options might be completely different than mine.
Everyone's struggle is different, but we can all agree that addiction is a cunning disease and it helps to get more information and inspiration wherever you can. And to remind yourself that you are not alone in your addiction.
