Evaluating The Efficacy & Cost Of Vitamin C Supplements

Vitamin C is an important and required micronutrient that we need for overall health and scurvy prevention among many other things. It is found naturally in citrus fruits and other healthy foods, but not all of us get enough from regular meals. But how useful are Vitamin C supplements and are they worth the price? Frugal Fitness investigates:

General Information

Vitamin C is important because it is a powerful antioxidant that can destroy free radicals and help to stimulate the immune system. It is also important for other daily bodily functions and processes. While I do not recommend taking mega-doses of Vitamin C, a capsule or tablet supplement per day or when you are feeling under the weather can help to make a difference. If you are perfectly healthy and consuming enough fruits and vegetables daily with your meals, you probably don’t need Vitamin C supplements.

Cost

A large bottle of Vitamin C tablets or capsules will run you about $10-15 and last you almost a year even if you took one every day. There are different forms of Vitamin C, Vitamin C with other vitamins, and Vitamin C with herbs such as Rose Hips but I wouldn’t pay extra for them.

Risks /Side Effects

There are no major side effects on record for Vitamin C since it is a water soluble vitamin. I usually take it with food anyways. I would recommend purchasing the bottle with the lowest amount of Vitamin C content, as this will still be 100% or less per serving. Taking 300%, or even 5000% will probably not have any more benefit than taking 100% and you will just end up excreting the rest of the Vitamin C your body did not utilize. If you take enormously large doses of Vitamin C consistently you may risk health problems.
