Healthy Chocolate Can Be Part Of A Balanced Diet

healthy dark chocolate artisanal cocoa antioxidants cacao frugal fitness blog

Most people out there dread dieting because it keeps them from eating their favorite foods. For most people that might mean pizza, pasta, alcohol, red meat, and most of all chocolate! Who doesn't love that chocolaty goodness! Well we're here to tell you that chocolate can still be part of your weight loss or bodybuilding diet and you'll still get incredible results. You just have to make sure that you are consuming healthier dark chocolate, artisanal craft chocolate, or 100% cacao instead of the cheap processed milk chocolate or white chocolate products that you usually find in your grocery store or brand name products.

Artisanal Chocolate

Craft chocolatiers create healthier and tastier chocolate products like artisan chocolate bars by hand and with all natural ingredients. There are less preservatives included in artisanal chocolate which means fewer chemicals and filler. The cocoa beans are also fresher and have a higher chance of being farmed organically or with reduced pesticides since they are often times from local farmers.

Aside from the health benefits, artisanal chocolate tastes amazing! Think of the difference in flavor between craft beers like Guinness or Sam Adams beer and the usual stale swill from cheap cases and you'll get the idea of how much better craft chocolate tastes. The flavors are more diverse, richer, and more sophisticated. That means you can enjoy smaller amounts of chocolate with the same enjoyment and even less of an impact on your weight loss or bodybuilding diet.

What makes craft chocolate even better is the positive effect it has on both local economies and the environment. Craft chocolatiers work directly with local cocoa bean farmers and pay fair wages since the middleman is removed and they can charge higher prices to the customer than the competing corporations. Craft chocolatiers also usually use more environmentally friendly wrapping materials. You don't have to feel guilty about breaking your diet or harming the environment when you consume craft chocolate.

Double Up On Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate and recipes with dark chocolate are also healthier alternatives to the low quality milk chocolate or white chocolate found in average products like candy bars and chocolate covered snacks.

Dark chocolate has higher levels of antioxidants, fiber, heart-healthy fat, minerals, and protein while containing less added sugar. It also usually has higher levels of natural caffeine which means you might be able to skip that extra cup of coffee that probably contains sugar, fat, and chemicals from flavor syrup.

Dark chocolate has been shown to improve alertness, protect your skin from sun damage, reduce bad cholesterol, lower blood pressure, reduce risk of diabetes, and improve immune system. It's a veritable super-food!

And if you want the perfect storm of healthy and delicious chocolate, look no further than craft dark chocolate!!

Cacao Power

100% cacao, or baking chocolate, in powder or bar form is very healthy and also a great vegan option. It works perfectly in baking, hot chocolate, or just eating straight if you can handle the mild, unsweetened, and slightly bitter taste.

Cocoa Conclusion

While you may need to eat in reasonable portions, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to include healthier craft chocolate or dark chocolate into your weight loss diet. Everything in moderation after all, plus you'll need some treats to help keep you on the diet in the first place! Good luck and enjoy some sweet treats today!

Salty & Seedy Chocolate Bark Recipe

salty seedy chocolate bark recipe homemade dessertssalty seedy chocolate bark recipe frugal fitness baking

A couple times a week I teach English for ten hours straight, with a Zumba class in between. It is on those days that I must arm myself with an arsenal of energizing (and comforting) snacks, like this bark. This week, it got me through eight hours of teaching Little Red Riding Hood at school (my wolf voice is pretty awesome now) and countless hours of I am, you are, he is, she is, it is, etc. during my private lessons. Here's the thing though, I'd be lying if I said my job wasn't fun. Obviously there are times when I'm annoyed, tired and sick of the repetition, when I just want an adult job with benefits, or a nice relaxing one at a desk. But then the next minute I'm dancing to Barbie Girl with a third grader while her mom's in the kitchen making us hot chocolate. And I wouldn't trade that for anything. Not even a 401K or rich real estate.

Salty & Seedy Chocolate Bark

Ingredients:

6 oz. dark chocolate, chopped
1/4 cup almonds
1 1/2 tbs sunflower seeds
1/4 tsp salt

Instructions:

In a pan over medium high heat, toast the almonds and the sunflower seeds, stirring constantly for about a minute. Set aside in a bowl and sprinkle with the salt. In the same pan, melt the chocolate. Pour it onto a sheet pan covered with parchment paper and spread. (It won’t cover entirely.) Sprinkle with the almond, seed and salt mixture. Let cool for at least two hours and break into pieces. Store in an airtight container. Enjoy the delicious and nutritious homemade recipe!

I'm all about the simple pleasures in life, and at work, so there's nothing that a little bark can't fix; a disagreement with a co-worker, an impending deadline, a dreary day. Pack some healthy nutritious bark next week and see how it can help. Hey, if it can get me through doing a wolf voice for hours, then consider it magical!

Frugal Recipe: Dark Chocolate Turtle Graham Cracker Bars!

Contributed By Courtney Horan, Author of Sweet Tooth Sweet Life
This recipe is INCREDIBLY DECADENT and outrageously delicious.
Yesterday afternoon, I came across an email from the 12 Days of Cookies that had me totally intrigued. After reading the ingredient list + preparations, I decided it was easy enough, yet worth any effort to attempt to make, so I put together my ingredients and got to work.
IMG_6766
Yes, that’s two sticks of butter…Hey, I warned you. We’re not counting calories here today folks. ;)
Start off by lining a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper (or a silicone mat, if you have one…I don’t). Arrange the graham crackers in a single layer on the baking sheet. Luckily, my 15×10 jelly roll pan fit ‘em all perfectly!
IMG_6768
Next, combine your butter, brown sugar, chopped pecans, and a pinch of salt in a medium sauce pan.
IMG_6771IMG_6770
IMG_6773
Bring the mixture to a boil…
IMG_6774
And continue to boil for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly. You’ll notice the mixture will start to thicken up and bubble nicely.
IMG_6775
Pour the butter mixture evenly over the graham crackers…
IMG_6776
But be prepared to start unconsciously licking your lips. It will happen. :-P
IMG_6777
Bake for 15 minutes in a 350 degree oven.
IMG_6778
While the graham cracker + butter mixture is cooking, start to prepare your chocolate.
IMG_6767
Melt the chocolate in a glass bowl placed over a simmering pot of water (if you’re smart, you’ll simply rinse out the same pot you used for your butter mixture and just fill it with a little water…less dishes to wash!) ;)
IMG_6779
At this point, it is absolutely, positively acceptable to snag a couple chips. Hey, you’ve been working hard. :)
IMG_6780
Now it’s time to be patient. Give ‘em a few good stirs, and go ahead and “accidentally” let your finger slip and hit the chocolate coated rim of the bowl.
IMG_6782
It will take a good 10-12 minutes for the chips to start melting, but I promise…eventually you’ll end up with a smooth, creamy chocolate.
IMG_6785
By now, it’ll probably be about time to take your graham cracker + butter mixture out of the oven.
IMG_6786
It’s ok to stare in amazement, then continue on.
IMG_6787
Pour your melted chocolate over the toffee-covered graham crackers and spread evenly.
IMG_6789
IMG_6790
I also sprinkled my dark chocolate layer with a little sea salt. If you have some on hand, go for it. :)
IMG_6791
Chill completely in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. Cut into bars (they won’t break perfectly) snag one (or three) for yourself, then immediately put the rest in the freezer.
IMG_6801
Or share them with friends.
IMG_6802
Otherwise, you’ll be making a new batch quicker than you can say “flippin’ fantabulous!” :-D
