Exercises You Can Do To Relieve Back Pain

exercises relieve back pain strengthen core stretch low back muscles

First and foremost, nearly 80% of Americans, at some point in their lives, try to get relief from back pain. Moreover, back pain not only affects their everyday activities but also their sleep. Furthermore, there are many reasons and remedies for back pain, including lower back pain and neck pain.

Bettering Back Pain

The good news is that exercise is one of the remedies. In fact, exercise helps strengthen the back and may be able to help relieve back pain. However, it is important to consult with your medical provider to ensure exercise is appropriate when you are having back pain or other medical conditions, but also if you have any doubts.

When your back hurts, the natural reaction is to rest, especially bed rest. However, inactivity slows down the healing process and makes your muscles weaker, tighter, and more painful. In fact, the best thing to do is to stay as active as possible. In that spirit, below are a sampling of stretches and exercises that can help your back get better.

Stretching

Stretching is an effective treatment for back pain because stretching relaxes tight muscles and improves circulation, which, in turn, nourishes the spine. A sampling of some popular stretching exercises follows.

Rotate Your Trunk

This stretch improves spine mobility while relaxing muscles on both sides of your trunk.

1. Start by laying on a mat with knees bent.

2. While keeping the upper back flat on the floor, rotate both your legs towards the floor on one side until you feel the stretch.

3. After holding for 10 seconds, repeat the stretch on the other side.

Repeat the above sequence ten times.

Child’s Pose

This stretch improves spine mobility while relaxing muscles in the lower back.

1. Start by laying down with knees and hands on the floor, like a dog.

2. Next, move your buttock back so that they touch the back of your feet.

3. Meanwhile, stretch out your arms forward as your body moves to the floor.

4. After holding the stretch for 10 seconds, return to the starting position.

Repeat the above sequence ten times.

Back Stretch

This stretch improves spine mobility while strengthening back and abdominal muscles.

1. Start by laying down with knees and hands on the floor, like a dog.

2. Next, arch your back towards the ceiling and hold for 10 seconds.

3. Next, arch your back towards the ground and hold for 10 seconds.

Repeat the above sequence ten times.

Hamstring Stretch

This stretch improves hamstring flexibility. Consequently, stress in the back is reduced when you are involved in bending or lifting activities.

1. Start by sitting on the floor with one leg straight and the other bent at the knees.

2. While keeping the back flat, lean forward at the hip until a stretch is felt behind the thigh.

3. Hold for 10 seconds.

4. Repeat the above steps using the other leg. Repeat the above sequence ten times.

Hip Flexor Stretch - Standing

1. Stand with your feet hip-wide apart and toes pointing forwards.

2. Next, bend your right knee and bring your right heel up towards your butt.

3. Next, hold your right foot with the right hand and gently pull to point your knee toward the floor.

4. Meanwhile, you can hold on to a chair with the left hand for support.

5. Hold for 30 seconds and then repeat with the other leg.

Hip Flexor Stretch - Prone

3. Holding the other end of the exercise band, straighten the knee of that leg and slowly pull the leg toward your head.

4. Hold for 30 seconds and return foot back to the floor.

5. Repeat the sequence with the other leg.

Wall Sits

1. Stand about a foot away from a wall with your back towards the wall.

The Bottom Line On Blunted Back Pain

Exercises For A Healthy Spine

exercises healthy spine lower back workout lumbar stretches

Dr. James Chang in East Brunswick is one of the best sports medicine specialists and orthopedists in New Jersey. One thing in particular that he can help you with is spinal disorders if you live in NJ or New York.

Most chronic back pains are caused by issues to the spine. A good exercise routine should help you strengthen your back and spine.

However, there are certain stretches that specifically help your spine. They will ensure that your spine is aligned and your back muscles are flexible.

The following are four examples of exercises for a healthy spine:

1. Back Flexion Exercise

As the name suggests, the exercise involves stretching your back muscles. It will also help align the spine by curving and stretching it.

The exercise is done by first lying flat on your back. Lift both of your knees and pull them towards you. Lift your head and try to connect your face to your knees.

Hold that position for thirty seconds and then take a rest for however long you need. Repeat the exercise five times and you should feel a great stretch in your back.

2. Knee To Chest Stretch

The knee to stretch is another great way to lengthen your spine and stretch your back. It is very similar to the back flexion exercise.

You begin by lying flat on your back. Lift one knee and pull it towards you. Try to get the knee to touch your chest. If you are unable to reach the chest just pull as hard as is comfortable.

Put the leg back on the ground and stretch the other leg in the same manner. Ensure that you put your back on the ground while you stretch for support.

3. Neck Stretch

The spine reaches all the way up to the neck, so stretching the neck is a great exercise to maintain a healthy spine. This exercise involves stretching the neck in all directions and can be done anywhere. Stand straight with your head looking forward. Drop your head to the right and towards your right shoulder. Place your hand on the side of your head and pull your head gently to the right.

Hold for thirty seconds and then release your head into a neutral position. Repeat the sequence on the other side.

Place your hands on the back of your head and then pull your head forwards towards your chest. Hold the position for thirty seconds and then relax.

Lift your head upwards and look towards the ceiling. Hold the position and feel the stretch in the front of your neck. You can repeat the sequences as long as you like.

4. Hip Crossover Stretch

The hip crossover stretch is a particularly great movement for the lower back and spine. However, it will also stretch your hip and glutes.

Lie flat on your back, preferably on a mat. Bend your knees about shoulder width apart. Cross your left leg over the right leg and lift your left leg. Use your hands to pull your left knee towards your chest.

Hold the position for thirty seconds, and then repeat the sequence on the other side. Repeat this lumbar spine exercise as many times as you want for a stronger and more flexible lower back.

8 Balance Board Exercises You Should Try

balance board exercises

Flexibility and balance are two core necessities for a healthy and stable life. Many things can affect balance, such as injury, recovery from surgery, or ageing. When you have problems with your balance, it's far more likely that you're going to fall and injure yourself further. Amongst the elderly, the risk of falling is far more significant, and in this age group, there is a massive problem with fractured hips and associated issues.

It’s no surprise that physicians are keen to help their patients improve their balance and flexibility, therefore strengthening their core and creating a far healthier outlook. There are several ways you can work to improve your balance, but a balance board is one of them.

What Is A Balance Board?

A balance board is a tool that can be used to increase balance and flexibility for those who need it. These can be used to carry out balance exercises for beginners or even seasoned athletes who want to focus on strengthening their core or recovery from injury or even surgery.

It is a board which you stand on, which is slightly off-balance in itself. You then engage your core muscles and work through balancing board exercises to improve your overall balance and stability. The board can be likened to a see-saw somehow, giving you a slightly off-kilter sensation that you need to fight against to strengthen your skills.

Exercises To Try With A Balance Board

According to Niva MD, Most balance board exercises work your core muscles, your glutes, back, and the major muscles in your leg. By strengthening these significant muscles, you're able to stay upright and correct yourself far more quickly than otherwise. That is particularly important for older adults who may struggle with their balance due to illness, side effects from medication, or the general ageing process.

1. Balanced Push-Ups

Place the balance board on the floor and get down onto your knees. When you're ready, reach forward and place both your palms flat on the board and stretch your legs out behind you. Move up onto your tiptoes and make sure to keep your back straight. Then, lower your body down in a traditional push-up, pausing for a second and then pushing back up.

2. Abdominal Exercises

Balance and stability exercises are designed to work out the abdominal muscles as well as the back.

Sit down on the board and make yourself comfortable. Cross your legs but make sure that your back remains as straight as possible. Once you're ready, slowly move your body around in a circle but only use your abdominal muscles. Pull in your stomach and make sure to use your core, not your back! Once you've moved one full rotation, alternate back the other way. Keep going for two minutes, or build up your time slowly.

3. Forward, Backward, Or Side Tilt

Many balance training exercises are done while standing on the board unaided, but at first, you can hold onto something, e.g. a stable chair or the wall, until you become more confident.

The forward, backward, or side tilt can be done by standing on the board and keeping your back straight. When you’re ready, use your abdominal muscles (pull in your stomach) to move the board forwards, but don’t allow it to touch the floor. Then, move backwards and do the same. Once you're ready, move side to side, avoiding touching the floor.

4. Squats

Squats are one of the best exercises for improving balance and can be done very quickly on your balance board. Stand up straight on the board and wait until you feel stable. Then, slowly bend your knees and move downwards into a traditional squat position. Hold it for a few seconds, then return to standing, and be careful to keep your knees soft. Repeat for another ten seats.

5. Single Foot Balance

The single foot balance is one of the best beginner balance exercise options. All you need to do is stand on your balance board, keeping your back straight. To get the most out of the exercise, you need to avoid holding onto anything, but you can look at something that isn't moving to help keep you steady. Once you're ready, either bend one leg behind you or lift one leg to the side so that you're standing with one leg on the board. Hold it for a few seconds before changing legs and repeating.

6. Around The Clock

The around the clock exercise will strengthen your core, your hips, and your ankles. Stand comfortably on the balance board with your legs a slight distance apart. Keep your back straight and slowly move around the board in a circular motion, keeping your feet firmly where they are. Once you’ve completed one rotation, pause and move back around the other way.

7. Calf Stretch & Raises

Tight calves can be a problem when maintaining balance, so this is one of the best exercises for improving balance and overall stability. For this exercise, you need to step forwards and place one foot onto the board, moving so that it is just your heel that connects with the board. Keep the other on the floor. When you’re ready, gently tilt forward until you can feel the stretch that moves down your calf muscle. Wait a few seconds and then change legs.

8. Half Moon

The half-moon is one of the slightly more challenging balance board exercises. Stand with one foot on the board towards the front and the other in the middle. When you're ready, slowly lift one leg out behind you and slowly lower your body down so that your leg and body are in a straight line. Aim to hold the position for up to 20 seconds, working up to that level if you find it hard at first.

Conclusion

These balance board exercises are ideal for beginners and intermediates alike. Slowly work up your tolerance by building time, perhaps starting at 5 seconds, up to 10 seconds, and then further if you can manage it.

A balance board is an ideal option for anyone who wants to strengthen their balance and stability, regardless of age or ability level.

4 Exercises Proven To Help Tone Your Body

Making it to your fitness club is not always possible. However, there are four excellent exercises you can do anywhere, which are proven to help tone your body. They are so simple that it's easy to try these exercises at a pay-as-you-go gym, without having to pay for a pricey contract.

Like the flexibility provided by these exercises, pay-as-you-go fitness centers in Toronto, like Striation 6 offer members a financial flexibility not offered by traditional gyms, and, armed with a few easy exercises, you can use these gyms to help tone your body in no time. Here are four outstanding exercises to tone your entire body.

Planking

Planking is an often-misunderstood exercise. It is an excellent maneuver to tone your entire body, and best of all, it takes little or no space. Beginners can start a planking regimen by gradually increasing the amount of time they plank, and there are also variations of planking that make it a great option for all fitness and strength levels. You can gravitate to side planking and other more intense planking moves as you become more comfortable with this exercise.

Push-Ups

Similar to planking, push-ups can be done just about anywhere. Another great feature of push-ups is that you can reduce or increase the difficulty: Standard push-ups are a proven exercise to help tone your entire body, but you can elevate your feet to add intensity. Advanced trainers can also include single-arm push-ups, or other difficult push-up variations, or reduce the level of intensity using an exercise ball. When you go to a pay-as-you-go gym, enlist the help of a personal trainer to show you exactly how to do push-ups for maximum effect.

Single-Leg Deadlifts

Single-leg deadlifts focus in large part on the lower body, however, with some inventive forethought, they can also tone your entire body. The standard single-leg deadlift works the quads, calves and your core muscles, but by adding arm moves, with or with weights, you can boost the full-body tone of this exercise. Dumbbells and kettle bells can be used to seriously maximize the intensity of this underrated but incredibly effective exercise.

Bulgarian Split Squat

The final in your list of exercises to tone your body is the most difficult. The Bulgarian split squat with rear lateral raise is a rarely used, but intense exercise. It is frequently one of the benefits of doing bootcamp classes, as instructors appreciate the full body intensity of performing this exercise correctly. The Bulgarian split squat can be performed without the rear lateral raise, however the added maneuver magnifies the intensity dramatically. The extra move helps to ramp up the cardio benefits, while also incorporating the chest, shoulders, arms and back into an exercise originally designed for leg work.

These four exercises are simple, and, when you try them at the right pay-as-you-go gym, can be very effective in burning fat, adding muscle and generally toning the body. Many of these exercises are employed as part of intense group classes offered at pay-as-you- go gyms. When you take advantage of a flexible gym, you also gain the expertise of the knowledgeable professionals that work there to make certain you are doing these body-toning exercises correctly. Make sure to pair up your exceptional exercises with plenty of protein powder!

5 Exercises to Improve Your Balance

exercises to improve balance

Balance refers to the ability of your body to remain steady in a position that is in line with your center of gravity. It is the combined effort of your ears, eyes, muscles, and joints that keep you in a state of balance. However, if you have balance problems, you tend to sway or wobble, resulting in an uneven weight distribution that increases your risk of injuries.

Balance is to every activity that involves the use of the lower extremities such as standing, walking, running, and climbing the stairs. Even sitting upright requires balance. You may not be aware of it but your body always tries to keep yourself upright. Balance and coordination work together to facilitate mobility and reduce your risk of fall-related injuries. However, your sense of balance can also diminish with age, just like any other physiologic processes. In fact, balance problems are a major cause of falls in the elderly population.

A proactive way of countering this phenomenon is with balance-strengthening exercises. Check out these top 5:

Stand Or Sit On A Balance Disk

A balance disk not only alleviates back pain; it can also be used to improve your balance and coordination as you try to distribute your weight equally when sitting and standing on this wobble cushion.

You can start by standing or sitting on a firm balance disk. As you go, you can deflate it gradually and strive to keep your balance while the device wobbles. Balance disks are designed for both workouts and physical therapy so you can also develop your posture and core muscles when using one.

Stand On One Leg

You can transform this balance activity into a balance exercise, which you can do anytime and anywhere. While doing daily chores such as washing the dishes, you can try to stand on your right leg and hold this position for about 10-20 seconds. Then do the same using your left leg. You may increase the number of seconds to challenge yourself. You can also do this balance exercise while watching TV, preparing your meals, or waiting for the bus to arrive.

To take this a little further, there are countless effective single leg exercises you can insert into your workouts. You won't be able to use as much weight, but it will work more of the smaller stabilization and core muscles that are crucial for balance and athletic performance.

Enroll In A Yoga Class

Yoga has a lot of health benefits. Aside from boosting your physical fitness, facilitating meditation, and enhancing your mood, it can also help improve your balance. Research has shown that participating in a 10-week yoga class improved the flexibility and balance of college athletes, thereby improving their athletic performance.

In addition to improving joint flexibility in seniors, another study has shown that yoga interventions resulted in better balance and mobility in people aged 60 years and older. If you have a balance problem, it would be wise to inform your yoga instructor beforehand so that he or she can devise a personalized yoga program for your health needs.

Walk Sideways

Walking sideways is an easy yet effective balance exercise. It helps improve the balance and coordination of your hips, knees, and ankles. To do this exercise, stand straight with your feet together. Step sideways by moving your right foot to the right. Then place your left foot next to your right foot. Repeat this 10 times before going to your left side. When walking sideways, try your best to walk in a straight line.

Do Step-Ups

Step-ups is a well-known cardiovascular exercise but you can also use it to improve your balance. To do step-ups, grab a sturdy step stool. If you don’t have one, you can do step-ups on the lowest level of your stairs. Step up your right foot, followed by your left foot. Then step down your right foot, followed by your left foot once again. Repeat this 10 times.

Make sure that you do step-ups in a controlled and slow manner. You don’t have to do the exercise fast as you are doing a balance exercise this time and not a cardiovascular exercise.

You can increase your balance training intensity as you get used to the routines. Start improving your balance now to avoid living your life with a mobility aid later.

10 MINUTES TO A SOLID CORE WORKOUT

A perfect set of exercises that just about anyone can do! All you need are a couple dumbbells, yourself, and 10 minutes. (We all have AT LEAST that). Challenge yourself to this set wherever you are, at home or at the gym.

All of these moves are great, solid core exercises for a toned midsection. Combined, they set you up for some major strengthening and toning. They are set up to be two smaller circuits. Follow the instructions below for a walk through of reps and any needed direction. Watch the video below to see what each exercise looks like.

3-4 sets: 10 weight to knees crunch (Do not lift your shoulders or head off the ground. Focus on squeezing your core as you come together during this workout!)

10 each side weightless contralateral crunch (Your goal is to get your shoulder blades up off the ground here. The arm that is out to your side is used as a base. If you must push your weight onto that elbow to get up at first, that is okay. Work toward using total core strength in time.)

10 straight arm crunch (This is a great way to crunch without pulling your neck. You are to push your arms straight toward your toes, again with the goal of getting your shoulders off the ground. Make sure you face up toward the ceiling so that there is no tension in the neck.)

Rest 1-2 minutes & repeat these three, then move to the next circuit

3-4 sets

10 each Single knee pull-in + leg raise (Lean back to 45 degrees & plant your hands behind you for a stable base.)

10 each lower ab circuit (ankles together pulling in & out between dumbbells---& ankles together moving up & over DBs ----& starting with ankles together moving away over dumbbells)

Rest 1-2 minutes & repeat these four exercises and you’re all done!

Does lower back pain hamper your everyday activities? If yes, be relieved that you are not alone in this world. It is estimated that about 80% of the world population suffer from some kind of back pain at some point of their life, especially on their lower back. This pain can make your day to day life as it can hinder your day to day activities. Performing certain workouts will help to alleviate the issues as it relieves the symptoms elated to the pain in the lower back area.

Back Stretch Exercise

This is one among the popular exercises for lower back pain or injury. If you have tried yoga then you might be aware of the cobra pose.  This looks similar to the back stretch exercise. This workout will help in strengthening the muscles and stretches it at the lower back. You can perform this exercise buying face down with your palms facing flat on the floor beneath your shoulders. Now keep your waist fixed on the ground, keep your arms straight, and lift your head off the ground slowly. Now tilt your head slightly towards the upper back and on the air until you feel a good stretch in the lower back. Remain in this position for about 10 to 30 seconds and come back to the old position.

Bridge

The bridge is a good exercise to strengthen the lower back muscles and the hamstring. To do this workout, lie down on the back and keep your knees and heels flatly on the surface of the floor. Now press the feet slowly on the floor, lift the hips from the ground, and make sure it forms a straight line with the help of your shoulders and knees. Keep your ab muscles tight and hold the position for over 15 seconds. Now lower the legs slowly and reach the first position. Now repeat for up to 4 sets.

Cat Camel

This is a great exercise, which can also be performed as a warm up exercise. This exercise can eliminate back pain and keep away from sciatica. It can ease the pain at the back as it makes your spine to extend and perform a full motion. To perform this cat camel correctly, begin by taking a position on all fours by lying on your hands and knees. Arch your lower back. Keep your head between the shoulders and extend the mid-upper portion of your back towards the ceiling. Now get back to starting position and make sure you perform 15 or 20 reps.

Planks

The plank exercise is an effective one for the lower back and abdomen. Begin this workout in a push up position and rest your elbows and forearms on the surface of the floor. Make sure your body is in a straight line and hold the position for about 15-30 seconds. Repeat this up to 5 times to reduce back pain at work or elsewhere.

However, make sure you consult your doctor before you are trying a few workouts, as it must be performed correctly to prevent all kinds of serious injury.

Frugal Fitness Answer:
I'm glad my ab and core workout videos have been helpful for you! Unfortunately, unless you are already at 15% or less bodyfat, or you workout and diet like an absolute beast, it may be tough to get six pack abs in just a few months. As I've discussed in many blog posts and YouTube videos, getting a ripped midsection is a byproduct of building up the rectus abdominus muscles adequately (about 5-10%), and dieting/cardio/weight training with healthy living (90-95%). So abs are really made in the kitchen, and on your cardio equipment, and not on the ab machines or physioball like some people may think. So anyways, without knowing exactly where you are starting from, here is what I would recommend for getting your midsection ripped up in the shortest amount of time:

You need to train hard and often to get a six pack in a span of a few months. I would recommend weight training 4-5 times per week and cardio 4-5 times a week as well for optimal bodyfat loss while minimizing too much muscle mass reduction. I would recommend that you train abs (and lower back to keep your core musculature in proportion and avoid injury) 1-2 times per week, about 15 minutes each time, usually before cardio. Get in 15+ repetitions per set and just do several abdominal exercises mixed in with lower back exercises without rest until you reach failure. If you haven't reached failure by the end of 15 minutes, then you should just finish the muscles off with crunches and/or planks. Cardio workouts should include high intensity intervals of at least 30 seconds in length every 3-5 minutes, cardio sessions should last 30-45 minutes in length (or longer).

Also consume a high protein, moderate healthy fat, and low carbohydrate diet if you can manage. The carbs you do consume should be complex carbohydrates with a low glycemic index which provide you with a stable blood sugar and energy level throughout the day. Some excellent examples of this are oats, brown rice, sweet potatos, granola, and vegetables. Supplementing with Green Tea or Green Tea Extract, Omega-3 Fatty acids, CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acids), B-Vitamins, Chromium, and/or caffeine can all help to expedite the fat loss and improve energy levels for your workouts. Unfortunately, none of them are magic bullets when it comes to fat loss and improving definition, there is no way around the hard work and dedication involved! If you really want that six pack, especially without having to wait a year or two, you'll need to hit the gym hard! Good luck and I wish you the best on your quest for the elusive 6 pack!
