Think of it as temporary first aid and this is only useful for certain injuries within 72 hours post-injury or less. (sometimes also the P in PRICE acronym is "pressure", same rationale)


Elevation: Keep the area of the injury elevated if possible to let gravity help out instead of hurt you more. You want to avoid extra blood and fluids pooling at the injury site, especially the extremities (let's say ankle in this case) which again could add to the inflammation of the site.

So there you have it, simple yet effective tips to help mitigate the damage done by an injury and to improve the overall healing process. As mentioned before, use common sense and if you have any doubt that it is more than just a minor injury, seek medical attention for an X-Ray,  MRI, or additional diagnosis.

Orthopedic neck braces are soft and comfortable because they are made from foam that keeps its shape. Even though it is soft, it effectively supports the neck.  When people use one, it fits well and it has a nice design.  The cover of the neck brace is available in different colors and is very durable because it made from microfiber material of superior quality. The Different Kinds of Neck Braces:  What are they and what do They Do?
Before you get a neck brace, it is important to know what your options are.  You must have knowledge of the types of neck collars available in the medical market. If you suffer from neck pain, you need something that will help properly support your neck. There are four different types that you can select from.
  • Rigid neck collars are soft because of the padding but only on the inside but the plastic on the outside is rigid. These are at a higher level than soft collars and are prescribed to patients after surgical procedures or after a traumatic experience. The plastic frame measures 1/8 inch thickness.
  • Semi-rigid collars for the neck are padded just like the rigid neck brace and are comfortable to wear.  They have semi rigid thermoplastic on the outside and can limit mobility of the neck area but support your chin as well as head. They are easy to use and also remove when not needed or when they should not be used.
  • Soft collars are used by those who need a small amount of support and to keep the neck and head still to prevent injury. This type of neck collar is recommended for individuals who have had minor surgery to fix cervical problems. It is made of foam which gives it a soft texture. When you use one, make sure it fits around the neck as snug as possible without harming your ability to breathe.
  • A CTO neck support is used to prevent movement of the upper back and spine as well as the neck area. Cervical Thoracic Orthosis provides more support than a rigid neck collar.  You must obtain a physicians advice before purchasing this type of brace because there are various styles to serve different purposes.
  • Halo neck support devices are used by those who have serious injuries to the neck such as a cervical fracture. Doctors who specialize in orthotics also recommend them to those who have undergone spinal surgery. The orthotist will put this on a patient and also remove it.  The patient should never attempt to remove a halo neck brace on his or her own. It is not removed until the spine has healed completely.
  • Philadelphia neck collars are very stiff and are attached using the Velcro that it has on each side. This must be used around the clock and should stay on until you are instructed to do so. Orthotists recommend this type for those who have upper spine fractures or for cervical surgery patients.
  • SOMI neck braces are used to align the spine and the neck to fix damage done to the neck. This is a very rigid neck brace that stops a person’s head from moving.  Movement such as twisting or bending your neck is prohibited. It helps the upper chest area heal and prevent movement that can cause injuries.
There are many types of cervical collars to choose from and the choice you make will depend on the purpose.  The cause should also be considered along with other factors to make an educated choice.

Frugal Workout For Rheumatoid Arthritis & Disabled Clients

Frugal Fitness can I ask a favor ? Can you do a series of videos of some exercises for someone that is a senior and cannot stand any longer for long periods of time. My mother is very sedentary due to RA and old age. It would be a blessing for her. Thanks Frugal Fit you are a good man. That workout chart and vids will be a blessing to Mom and others who are RA sufferers. Myself I am in the early stages of RA and my hands are usually hurting and in the evening are hurting and on fire (the RA inflames the knuckles by the end of the day and they are hot).


Frugal Fitness Answer:
There are a wide variety of physical limitations that can prevent a person from being able to stand up for long periods of time, and it can be quite difficult to engage in a consistent and well-rounded fitness regimen  if you suffer from a condition such as rheumatoid arthritis. The swelling, stiffness, pain, inflammation, and reduced range of motion makes working out much more difficult but it can still be done, and should be done. The best approach is to try to make sure that you and your mother can complete basic activities of daily living, minimize the pain and swelling, and get some of the basic benefits from an exercise regimen. For your mother, since she can't stand up for long periods of time, most of her exercises will be in the seated position, except for a few partial wall squats for necessary leg strength, hip stability, and bone density building.

Do 12-15 repetitions per set
Do Workout 2-3 times per week (don't do 2 days in a row)

(x = 1 set)
Seated Workout:
3x Partial (1/4) Wall Squats (only lower down and bend the knees slightly as shown below)
2x Seated Dumbbell Shoulder Presses (2-3 lb weights)
2x Seated Dumbbell Front and Lateral Raises (1-2 lb weights)
2x Seated Dumbbell Bicep Curls (2-3 lb weights)
2x Seated Dumbbell Hammer Curls (2-3 lb weights)
3x Seated Band Rows
3x Static / Isometric Chest Contraction 5 second holds per repetition

Exercise Illustrations:
