How The Sports Industry Changed Over Time

sports changed over time future of sporting events athletic technology athlete trends

Over the years, sport has seen many changes, but what changes and improvements can we expect to see in the future? Classic trainer brand Gola investigates how sports have changed over the years and decades.

From football to hockey, basketball to volleyball, gymnastics to cricket, the world of sport is a part of so many people’s lives as participants and fans. Sports have been ingrained in our DNA since ancient times. Naturally then, this wide-reaching athletic industry is frequently changing and evolving to improve not only player performance, but fan enjoyment too.

What Does This Mean For The Players?

Not only will our sports stars be enjoying the benefits of the latest in technological advancements for their chosen field, they will be feeling the pressure of an ever-more regulated and finely-scrutinised game. Plus, athletes may well be standing alongside a different type of sports player…

How Have Their Outfits Changed?

In the very near future, athletes will have greater access to smart-clothing — and no, we don’t mean playing football in tuxedos. These items of clothing will have integrated sensors designed to read biometrics as you go about your activities. Not only will this track information such as heartrate and temperature, but in the next few decades, one smart-clothing CEO claims we could use the technology to pinpoint why a person has developed illnesses such as cancer, be it genetic, environmental or diet.

From moisture-wicking clothing to wearable monitors tracking distance, speed, heart rate and more, we’re far from the days of just hitting the track with a pair of trainers, shorts and a vest! Things have certainly changed drastically from the days of golfers playing in full suits!

Closer Scrutiny In The Sports Industry Today

During the FIFA World Cup, video assistant referee technology was introduced for the first time at World Cup level.

This technology allowed referees to replay video footage of an event in order to support their decision-making. Not only that, but VAR can be used to award or rescind penalties depending on the original decision.

Genetics

It sounds like a sci-fi movie premise, but genetically-edited athletes may not be so far away either. According to one report, part of the increased data-collection capabilities in sport means that gene- based data collection could also be possible soon. This data could show what, if any, genetics make for a top-tier player. This can then be used in gene-editing to help produce faster and stronger athletes — though this has been noted by the World Anti-Doping Agency as a banned substance.

eSports / Fantasy Sports

What was once dismissed as little more than ‘trying too hard’ at a video game has now blossomed into a sport in its own right. eSports have rapidly grown over the years, with revenue in this area erupting from $130 million in 2012 to $865 million in 2025.

Its viewership is even starting to rival real-life sports, with the 2024 World Championship for League of Legends drawing 43 million viewers compared to 44.5 million viewers for game 7 of the NBA finals, according to one report.

Those in the know will tell you that, just like with playing football as a hobby compared to playing on a professional level, there’s a huge leap between playing a video game for fun and playing professionally. A lot of it boils down to what gamers call ‘game sense’, which covers what is essentially spatial and situational awareness within the virtual battleground.

It is this trait that many think will push eSports players to begin to be treated like athletes in a way, by proving speed and decision-making under pressure.

What Does This Mean For The Fans?

As technological advances increase, fans have been increasingly able to simulate this feeling of direct and indirect participation without having to buy tickets to physically attend the match.

Present: Social Media

Social media is effectively the digital stadium whenever a big game is on! You might not have known a particularly noteworthy boxing match was on, for example, until logging in to your social media accounts and seeing the hashtag everywhere.

In terms of sports, the social media go-to is often Twitter. Though the social media channel is often cited as being in a state of fluctuation, it has certainly found its footing in the sporting world. In 2024, 80% of Millennials checked Twitter, but this fell dramatically by 2025 with only 37% checking Twitter trends.

From 2025, the number of daily users began to increase again, rising by 9%. Visitor counts increase in particular during sports events, as seen during the Super Bowl, with an increase of 19% in terms of unique visitors.

Event engagement increased 31% with Twitter and recollection of the event in question increased 35%. With its rapid updating, easy-to-track hashtags for events and by-the-second commentary, Twitter is the ideal platform for fans around the world to gather and comment on the sport event at hand in real time.

Future: VR And AR Sports

Other than attending a sports game, such technology such as Augmented Reality (AR) would be the closest way a fan can get to experiencing the stadium sensation.

There is still a way to go before these types of virtual reality and augmented reality technology will be readily available and accessible, especially when considering the current capabilities of the technology. The sense of being really in attendance only happens when the action is close to the camera, such as with boxing. For other sports, any action that takes place further away from the cameras becomes 2D and quickly nullifies the sense of immersion.

Present: All About The Shirts and Kits

Another element that creates a sense of fan involvement comes from the sporting kit. As CNN points out, these shirt designs have the potential to symbolize iconic moments in history, so they’re naturally a popular way for fans to be a part of that if they are wearing that shirt too.

We saw this desire to own a physical representation of an iconic moment in practice at last year’s World Cup, with French fans clamoring to own the latest Nike shirt bearing two stars, representing the country’s two World Cup wins.

Future: All About The Footwear

Could we see a shift in the importance of sporting shirts in the future? Multiple studies have shown how Generation Z, the consumer of tomorrow, places emphasis on footwear when it comes to the coolest part of clothes and fashion. For them, it’s less about the newly released shirts and more about the year’s best cleats!

This could be down to a lesser sense of team loyalty, with more of Generation Z following individual sports stars regardless of their team switches. Following the stars rather than the teams also means that Generation Z tends to prefer fantasy sport games to betting on real games, as the former allows them to put together a team of all their favorite players.

The Future Of Sports Is Up In The Air

The future of sport is certainly shaping up to be incredibly exciting and far more varied than ever before. But it is always uncertain and evolving, especially after the Coronavirus pandemic. Watches aren't just for their functionality but are also essential to class up a look. Go for tactical watches, digital watches, fitness tracking wristwatches, or smartwatches... but make sure you keep the following considerations in mind.

There are 4 main types of wrist watches, and these are the dress, diver, field, and aviator. Let us have a look at each of them.

1. Dress Watches

These were designed as the timepiece for the wrist and not the pocket. The dress watches are all about simplicity and sophisticated designs. If you want a touch of class with your office, wear, go for a dress watch to avoid the "flashy" factor.

The dress watches have the following features.

• The size is thin and can slip on/off easily out of the shirt cuff.
• The casing has a variety in terms of shape; circular, square and rectangular. Most are made of precious metals like gold and silver.
• The dial display can sport Roman or Arabic numerals with leather band.
• Complicated features include the date and a moon

Pair your dress watch with the business suit or tuxedo to complete the "sharp" look.

2. Field Watches

Designed from the WWI trench watches, these have unique features that include visibility in low light and precise timing, even with the rigors of temperature and climatic conditions.

The features for the field watches are as follows.

• The size is usually small to medium since a large watch can get in the way of vigorous outdoor activities.

• The case is typically metal; stainless steel or titanium is the most common material used for the case. These usually have the feature where you can pull out the crown to pause the second hand.

• The dial display is large and comfortable to read even in the dark due to the illumination feature. It has bands of leather/canvas-Velcro straps for ease of access.

Pair the field watch with casual or evening wear to look fashionable.

3. Dive Watch

The dive watch is the most common type of watch that we have seen our favorite movie stars and celebrities sporting. The USP for these watches are the water-resistant and dive-proof features. The signature features of the dive watches are as follows.

• A standard dive watch is usually water-resistant up to a dive depth of 100 meters and more.

• The size is usually medium and is made of rust resistant materials like stainless steel and titanium.

4. Pilot Watch

Aviator watches are the chronographs that make it easy for pilots and aviators to track time when jet-setting across the blue skies.

Features include,

• A chronograph along with day/date and stopwatch.
• The dial is usually oversized with luminous hands for easy viewing, even in the dark of the cockpit.

Picking the right kind of wristwatch isn't just a frugal fashion statement, it's about function and fun. Decide for yourself what watch makes the most sense for your fitness, personal, and business needs.

Facts of Heart Rate Variability for Cardio Training

heart rate variability hrv cardiovascular training polar fit tracker running

The medical landscape is coming up with discoveries and developments! Each new device and invention are aimed to add value to an individual's life. Recently, much has happened in the context of Heart Rate Variability (HRV). Today, more people want to understand its importance and use in daily life. HRV can be tracked using devices and other instruments as well. However, you must have a clear understanding of it when performing your frugal fitness cardio workouts.

Physiologists and researchers have been tracking HRV to understand the medical condition of their patients. It can provide essential perspectives about various heart-related problems. Sometimes, health issues like cholesterol and high sugar levels too can be identified by measuring HRV. Recently, HRV has gained popularity amongst biohackers, coaches, athletes and even the general mass.

What Is HRV?

Simply put, a person with a healthy heart might have some irregularities. For instance, if your heart rate is at 60 beats every second, it doesn’t mean that it counts one beat every second. Instead, every heart beat comes with a minimal variation. It could be 0.85 seconds between two succeeding beats. When you calculate the pulse or heart rate, you can feel this difference.

Are you thinking about how to measure HRV? It all depends on the technology you are using. For instance, many people stick to the traditional ECG for the evaluation. But today, you have access to apps that helps you count the same accurately. To know more on this, you can check Elite HRV heart rate monitor.

The Link Between Cardiovascular Training And HRV

You can study about HRV and its connection with cardiovascular exercise. People who start this training daily, their body will experience a maximized blood plasma volume. It means that the heart will keep on flowing blood and also maintain sufficient blood pressure at a reduced heart rate. The parasympathetic branch usually manages the low rate. Parasympathetic regulation leads to increased HRV and longer inter-beat.

Gradually, with sustained and regular exercise, you can strengthen your heart muscles. It could also mean that at times, you might have a higher HRV and a lower heart rate. In its totality, the HRV is a clear indication of your cardiovascular health. However, it can also provide signs for other health irregularities and overall fitness. In a nutshell, the HRV reading lets you know the pace at which you are recovering from any trauma or illness and how are you prepared to go ahead with the day. Furthermore, HRV responds to sudden changes in the body and much earlier than the heart rate. Hence, it makes it easy for doctors and medical practitioners to identify any illness.

Cardio Conclusion

Selecting an HRV device or app is essential. Technology has made it easy for people to have access to both. If you are downloading an app, make sure that it syncs in with your Smartphone device seamlessly. Ensure that the app shares reading, which you can download and store for your perusal. Research a couple of leading apps and then select the one you need and that caters to your cardiovascular workout preference as well.

Are Distracting Smartphones Affecting Your Workouts?

disadvantages of smartphones gym selfies distracted workouts phone addiction

In a world where mobile electronic devices outnumber how many humans are living, it's fair to say humanity has reached a critical moment in its evolution.

As technology gets more and more advanced, we have learned how to do amazing health-related things with our cell phones such as track our fitness, look up great nutrition tips or find the best gyms out there.

But another effect of smartphones is driving humans in the other direction: we become less and less active the more we use smartphones.

Are the disadvantages of smartphones beginning to outweigh the benefits we derive from them?

Disadvantages of Smartphones

From the dinner table to the bedroom, all the way to the gym, cell phone usage is making an adverse impact that will result in your undoing if you aren't careful.

But what exactly do smartphones cause us to do that is so awful?

After all, how could doing simple, silly activities such as social media surfing or playing fantasy football be so serious?

Well, let's take a look at some facts.

90% of Americans own smartphones

Think about that for a moment. 9 out of 10 people you meet will own a smartphone. Can you think of any other device or product that 90% of the population has or uses?

The simple fact that such a massive proportion of society has and utilizes smartphones is quite an indicator of just how powerful the allure of smartphones can be.

67% of smartphone users admit to checking their phone when no notification or ring was felt or heard

The notion that an individual would check to see if something is on their phone without any reason to believe there would be is troubling.

Those who are prone to check their phone compulsively may have a smartphone addiction.

Other signs and symptoms of a cell phone addiction

There is a seemingly never-ending list of signs and symptoms of a cell phone addiction, but the major ones include:

  • Multiple failing attempts to curb cell phone usage
  • Constant usage of cell phone, even in inappropriate circumstances
  • A burning "need" to use the cell phone
  • Putting work or relationships at risk due to an inability to curb cell phone usage
  • Infatuation with the latest and greatest cell phones
  • Often talking only about cell phone related topics

While this all sounds scary, you can keep it in check when it comes to your fitness.

Here are some tips on how to make sure you keep up with your workout routine, by putting the phone down and picking those weights up.

Avoiding Excessive Cell Phone Usage At The Gym

Make your exercise a cell phone free environment - The simplest and likely best way to avoid using your cell phone during a workout is to simply not have it on you. If you don't have the phone, you cannot overuse it!

Get an app that stops you from using other apps - I know, I know: incredibly ironic, but nonetheless effective! There are apps out there that limit your ability to use apps and browsing features during specific times of the day. This allows you to move through your workout in peace and avoid all those pesky, distracting notifications.

Change your smartphone settings so you don't get distracted - This is a great method if you need your phone but are prone to overuse it. While still having the ability to call and text, you can change your settings so that notifications from social media and apps are turned off, making you less likely to get lured in by your cell phone.

Stay Up To Date On Fitness, Fashion, & More

While the disadvantages of smartphones are numerous and frightening, it is possible to avoid the alluring beeps of your smartphone by having the right attitude and a few handy tools.

If you like fitness and health, take a look at our workouts page, where we have all kinds of varying workouts for both men and women.

How To Avoid Cyber Security Attacks

how to avoid cyber security attacks most common malware hacking

In this world of the best security measures, many people are still worried about cyber-attacks. They have genuine concerns as the latest technology has enabled hackers to get access to the data and business secrets. Phones, tablets, computers, cloud services and other things are vulnerable to threats. There is a serious need that people should do something to protect their data and devices in and outside of the fitness industry.

In this post, we will talk about what kind of threats you may face when it comes to cyber-attacks in and outside of the fitness industry. We will also discuss the preventive measures, steps and practical solutions that will help you protect your data as well as devices.

The Cyber-Attacks You Are More Likely to Face

When it comes to the cyber-attacks, they can happen in different forms. It is important for the people to be aware of the types of attacks and how to deal with them. Nature of every attack is different and they require different reactions followed by robust measures to protect data.

1. Engineered Malware

There are people and even companies who create malware and use them to hack systems, computers and devices. They can come into your computers and phones with different apps. When you download unauthorized or third party apps, malware are installed on your devices and computers.

2. Spyware Attacks

The second form of attack appears when someone uses a spyware app. These are programmed software or apps or even files that target a certain section of the operating system. They are usually installed remotely. But some people prefer manual methods that are more accurate. The purpose is same and that is to steal important and sensitive data.

3. Hacking Attempts

The developers and software engineer know how to get access to a system. Yahoo lost data of millions of users when the hackers accessed their system and got away with the data. This is done manually but you will have no idea how this can happen and when the hackers will attack your smartphone, website, devices and company telephone system.

4. System Corrupting

This is another form of cyber-attacks. In this method, important data or files are corrupted so that they cannot be used. This is done intentionally and with a purpose to make someone face losses. You should be careful about your sensitive and important data and files. This form of attack can occur to anyone and you will have no option to deal with such cases.

Tips To Avoid Cyber-Attacks

Now, we are going to talk about some practical steps that you should ensure in order to protect your data and avoid cyber-attacks in future.

1. Use Cloud Services

This is one of the important things that can help you prevent attacks or hacking attempts. Cloud services are considered securer and safer than other services. It is not possible for the hackers to get access to the data in cloud services. Google, Amazon, Microsoft and other companies have their own cloud based storage services.

2. Prefer Reliable Web Hosts

The other effective step you can take in this regard is to choose your web hosts carefully. Going with cheaper web hosting plans or free hosting offers will make your website as well as data prone to the attacks. For this, you must get managed web hosting services and hire the best and trusted web hosts.

3. Replace Old Devices

The old computers and devices in offices are more vulnerable to attacks. They use old operating systems that are easy for the hackers to crack and steal data. For this reason, companies recommend to update your software and OS regularly so that attacks can be prevented. This will cost you some money but will protect your data for sure.

4. Keep WiFi Private

It has been seen that employees at workplace share WiFi passwords with their visitors. This practice needs to be curbed. Hackers use WiFi and internet connections in many cases when they have to hack computers or devices and get access to the data. Moreover, there should be strong passwords and public WiFi should be avoided.

5. Restrict Access To Data

Companies should have policies and rules regarding data sharing, access to important and sensitive information. Only the relevant and authorised people should get access to critical data. If this is not done, anyone can run away with your information and you will have no option or way to deal with such people. Prevention is always better than cure so this should be your top priority in the health and fitness industry.

The Internet Is Teching Fitness To A New Level

fitness technology changing industry

Fitbits, iWatches and portable mobile devices are common tools of modern fitness fanatics. To some, they are a sign of the times and an indication that technology is going too far. For others, they are necessary pieces of equipment which aid health and fitness. Whether they are good or bad is a debate which will rage on for a long time. One thing that is a fact, though, is the impact tech has and is having on health and well-being. Rightly or wrongly, the landscape has changed and is imperceptible now than it was a decade ago.

Here is a small selection of the adjustments in the fitness and tech world.

Effective Fitness

In the past, people used to try to replicate a sport or activity as best they could. However, there was no way to tell if they were doing it correctly or not because instructors were scarce. Today, there are hundreds and thousands of experts all available at the click of a button. Just go to YouTube and you can find advice and videos to follow which will revolutionize your workout. The best online pole dance lessons are even online now, which seems counterproductive yet is popular. And, because everyone has an internet connection, instructions are available anywhere at any time.

Affordability

Exercise costs money unless you like to jog around the block. Even then, there are expenses such as clothing which can be a potential hurdle. In the past, the cash factor would have put people off working out and maintaining their health. The World Wide Web has changed this in some ways. For starters, online tutorials and gym classes are available online for free.

A quick search will provide you with as many workouts as you need. Also, the online market has created competition. As a result, clothes are on offer at bargain prices.

Fitness Tracking

The average person hit the gym or pounded the pavement and that was that many years ago. Nowadays, the modern athlete keeps track of all of their excursions via mobile apps. Thanks to Strava and MapMyFitness, it’s possible to view a complete breakdown of a workout session. This allows people to understand how many calories they have burned and how long it took them to complete the plan. Better yet, it lets individuals analyse intensity and output to help them advance in the future. The result is a group of people who are getting harder, better, faster and stronger.

24 Hours 52 Weeks 365 Days

Gyms are like a food market now that they never close. Unlike a physical store, there is no reason for manpower at the gym. All modern organisations do in this era is to give members an electronic key card. That way, anyone can enjoy the facilities from morning through noon and night and back again. What this means is that fitness equipment is available to anyone with a membership 24 hours a day for 356 days of the year. Because there are no time constraints, people can exercise whenever they like.

Frugal Fitness Health & Wellness

Are you a health and fitness nut? Do you prefer swimming, running, bicycling, or working out at the gym? Many apps help track activity, calories; calories burned, etc… Apps range from simple and free apps to more complex and costly apps. The following information explains some of the apps out there.

Free apps for health and fitness:
The following is a list of free Android apps.   All these apps are available free from the AppStore and Amazon.com. Also included in the list is the release date of the apps.

  1. Heart Rate Monitor by SoundPro
  2.
  3. Exercise Tracker by Great Apps
  4.
  5. 7 Minute Workout app by Bytesize
  6.
  7. All Fitness TV app by AdRise, Inc.
  8.
  9. 7 Minutes Workout Assistant by App5ive

    Appcessories:

Appcessories, such as the sport watches that can synchronize with phones and websites, have become the most widely used health and fitness apps among fitness pros. The following are some of the newer sport watches used today.

1.TomTom runner cardio watch: TomTom runner cardio watch is available at TomTom stores and will be available at other stores, such as Amazon. The price is $269.99. The user experience design of the new TomTom runner cardio watch, made mainly for cyclists, swimmers and triathlon runners, will work well, however, for stationary bicycle and treadmill users. This waterproof watch has a motion sensor and a sensor to calculate and record cycling stats. It records laps, strokes, and swimming efficiency. Heart rate, distance, speed, and calories burned shows on the extra-large watch display. It has five intensity levels, of which, can all go through warming up to high intensity training.

This runner cardio watch syncs with the Galaxy S 5 phone and syncs to MapMyFitness, RunKeeper, Strava, and TrainingPeak, all of which are health and fitness websites and apps. All data from the watch uploads and tracks onto any of these websites.

      2. Casio Men's STB-1000-1CF OmniSync Sports Gear Smartwatch by Casio:
This Casio Smartwatch sells at Amazon.com for $79.95. This water resistant Smartwatch has a battery life up to two years. It has a stopwatch, and it measures and records distance and laps. Features include a phone finder, music control, and workout data display.
The Casio Men’s Smartwatch synchronizes with iPhone (5s/5c/5/4s - with iOS7 or higher). It works with fitness apps, Abvio’s Runmeter, Walkmeter, Cyclemeter, and Wahoo Fitness, all of which are accessible for download from the Apple App Store. With these apps, the Smartwatch is capable of checking activity data such as pace, distance, elapsed time, heart rate, speed.

The Casio Men's STB-1000-1CF OmniSync Sports Gear Bluetooth Fitness Smartwatch receives push notifications from your iPhone and alerts you by vibration alert and sounding an alarm. Push notifications include for an incoming call with caller ID; e-mail received, text message received, etc…

      3. Polar Loop Activity Tracker by Polar watches:
The Polar Loop Activity Tracker sells at Amazon.com for $89.00. It has a single button for navigating menus. The Polar Loop Activity Tracker records and tracks steps taken and distance covered. It displays how many calories burned. It pairs with a Bluetooth heart rate strap, which helps to determine the intensity level and the calories burned.

The Polar Loop synchronizes activity data directly with an android or iPhone. It also synchronizes to the Polar Flow website, for tracking data.

Synchronizing watches and apps:
How does synchronizing a sport watch with a phone app and website work? Watches are great at sensing whatever activity you are doing in the present and showing the amount of calories burned. However, if you want to track all of the activity of the day, or of the week, then a phone app and website are required. Most smartphones are now equipped with Bluetooth, and this is usually how the watches synchronize with a phone app. Most of the phone apps will track some activity data for the day, which usually includes physical activity; calories consumed, and calories burned. For a complete picture of activity over a specific length of time, synchronizing to a compatible website is necessary. To do this, a USB cord is needed. This USB cord is used to synchronize the phone to the website.

As suggested above, there are many fitness apps and appcessories to use to improve health and fitness. What app a person uses and how much he or she is willing to pay are dependent on how serious he or she is with health fitness.

Workouts Not Wardrobe! Frugal Fitness Tip

Let's be honest: Jennifer Anniston would look good
whether  she was wearing a $300  workout ensemble
or clothes from Wal-Mart. She's got that kind of money
to spend, you and I don't!
I'm back again with another Frugal Fitness Tip! Today, more than ever before, going to the gym or going for your morning jog has become more about what you are wearing and what gear you have than the actual workout itself. It's really getting pretty sad. In college and many gyms I worked at I used to see countless female members in full makeup and $300+ dollar outfits just to do 30 minutes of treadmill or elliptical and a set of crunches. I see women wearing the most hip and popular workout clothing brands, not necessarily because they are superior for performance, but because celebrities are wearing them or they are a symbol of status. Or just to keep up with their peers. And it's not just women, I see more and more guys repping fashionable $50 shirts or shorts, workout watches, heart rate monitors, $30+ hats, $120+ shoes, and much more just for a few sets of bench press and curls. Sometimes I just want to punch an Abercrombie & Fitch wearing dude right in the jugular.

You don't need to look like this for your cardio workout!
You might think this is an exageration but I've seen some
similar outfits  and other ridiculousness at gyms everywhere!
So here's the deal, you can wear a $1,000 gym ensemble with all the bells and whistles and technology, and you won't get a better workout than somebody wearing a $10 gym ensemble (me) with no shoes on. It doesn't matter what you wear, or your makeup, or your fancy $500 iPhone while you are peddling slowly on the exercise bike with Resistance 1. It's about functionality, safety, and focus. I wear $10 shirts or less, $10 workout shorts, and a $15 hat at the most. Shoes actually carry with them some function but I usually stick to $40-80 options. You can buy a stop-watch for $5 or a wrist watch for $10 if you just need to time yourself. You can buy a pedometer cheap too instead of $200 Nikes with built in microchip. I run my own business so sometimes I bring my old Droid X to my workout, but let's face it, they are nothing but distractions (unless you are watching Frugal Fitness TV or reading my posts during your workout :)  ). I've worn workout clothes that I've found in the Lost & Found (washed first). It's time to save some money, and distraction, and focus on what really matters: achieving the goal you set out for at the beginning of the workout. If you are doing things right, you will look good to others (and what other people think shouldn't matter that much anyways).

Check out this older but very good video I did on a similar subject a little while back:

Certified Race Course Length or Garmin Measurement? Hmmmm...

Contributed by Amanda Loudin of MissZippy1 (www.misszippy1.com).

Your GPS is not the final word
Yesterday on Twitter I picked up on the fact that fellow FitFluential ambassador Kristy was getting some grief from folks about her time in a recent 5-miler. Kristy PR’d the course by 1:40, yet some people were telling her that it didn’t count because “the course was short.” This, of course, according to their Garmins.
I know I’m going to offend some folks here, but I’ve gotta say it–your Garmin’s measurement of a course doesn’t count. At all. The race directors take a lot of time certifying courses. They do it–as you likely know–on the tightest tangent all the way through the course. Unless you are running that exact tangent, your Garmin is going to deliver a different measurement of the course. Not only that, but your Garmin may not be right.
If I had a dime for every time I’ve run with friends wearing Garmins, only to hear them compare numbers at the end and find that no two were the same, well, I would be retired by now. There are so many reasons for these mileage differences. Some Garmins pick up more satellites than others. Some might not record 100 percent of the run (if you go through a very thickly tree-lined section or are on a hilly trail, for instance). One runner might have run closer to the road tangents than the other. I could go on.
In a race situation, know that the race director has done his or her very best to measure the course accurately. When your Garmin invariably gives you a different number, just let it go. Do NOT find the race director and complain that the course was long (or short). Do NOT go out on your blog, Twitter, or Facebook and diss the race because the distance was off. Just race your race, enjoy the day, and accept a little discrepancy in numbers.
Technology is a great thing, but let’s not use it for the wrong reasons. To me, using it to whine and complain about a few tenths of a mile difference from Garmin to certified course is the wrong reason.
