HIIT Diet Tips: What To Eat Before And After Workouts

hiit diet tips eating before after workouts high intensity interval training exercise

Many people like high-intensity interval training nowadays due to one simple fact – it is really efficient. With HIIT you will get great results in a short period of time. Of course, this kind of workout is quite exhausting and challenging, that is why it is so rewarding.

However, many people still don’t realize how important it is to have a proper diet follow their workout regimen. Without proper food, your body won’t be able to build muscle which means that you can’t get shredded if you eat junk food.

So, take a look below and learn what type of nutrition you need to support a HIIT workout program.

Healthy Foods To Add In General

No matter what workout regimen you are on, you should know some ingredients that always need to be a part of your diet. It is common knowledge that junk food is a major no-no, but what other foods should you add?

Go for whole grains, fruits, veggies, and lean proteins. When you start crafting your nutrition plan, it is important that you have adequate calories and macronutrients included. Carbs are needed to fuel the body and provide energy stores for workouts.

You shouldn’t cut off too many foods you like, people sometimes forget that restrictive diet inhibits their wellness success. Instead, cut snacks, unhealthy fats and alcohol. Aim at clean foods and always stay hydrated. Especially during your workouts. This should come as one of the most important muscle building principles.

Nutrition Before Workouts

Seeing that these workouts are really difficult, it’s important to follow a healthy nutrition plan with adequate nutrition in the days and hours before a workout. You need to plan a moderate- to high-carb meal that also includes protein. This meal should be prepared and eaten three to four hours before the workout.

Then go for a high-carb snack within an hour after the workout. Some good options for a meal before the workout include whole-wheat toast with peanut butter and banana or non-fat Greek yogurt with dried fruit and almonds.

Nutrition After Workouts

Once you are done with your workout, you have depleted energy levels. That’s perfectly fine, that needs to happen. However, the main concern after a workout is the replenishment of energy. To be precise, you need to replace energy stores and thus repair muscles that have been broken down during the intense workout.

Again, you need to aim at a combination of carbs and protein. That is the most effective way to replenish energy stores. Aim at a 3:1 ratio of carbs in preparation for the next HIIT workout. Take a look at some suggestions for meals following you HIIT workouts

You could eat whole-grain cereal with fruit and soy milk, you could also go for whole-wheat crackers with fruit and cheese. If you really rely on bread and can’t say no to it, try to replace it with hummus and pita bread.

These are great substitutes since they aren’t as harmful as your usual bread but they can still make you feel full nonetheless.

List Of Ingredients You Need To Have Home If You Like HIIT

Some ingredients that you need to stock up on are:

● Hummus and whole-grain pita chips
● Chicken breast
● Veggies
● Fruits like apple, pear, banana, berries
● Peanut butter
● Greek yogurt
● Cottage cheese
● Quinoa with berries
● Nuts

As you can see, some of these foods and snacks have been mentioned above. To ensure that you stay on track when it comes to your diet, always have these ‘ingredients’ home. That way you can always grab something to eat whenever you feel food cravings.

Only this time you won’t hurt your gym progress or anything like that. These will make it easy for you to make your perfect combination of carbs and proteins both for your pre-workout and post-workout meals and snacks.

Conclusion

Never forget that good diet is as important as the effort you put in on a regular-day basis in the gym. Proper diet is the other important ingredient of a successful gym journey.

So, do your best to stay disciplined and choose only the right ingredients for your meals. Oh, and always stay hydrated.

7 Health Benefits of Going on the Keto Diet

health benefits keto diet low carb weightloss ketogenesis fat loss ketogenic dieting

Have you heard of Keto for weight loss? Eliciting a state of ketosis has been a popular way for people to burn fat these days.

A ketogenic diet is a new way of life that brings some serious benefits. By cutting carbs out of your diet completely you can improve your energy levels, health, and general wellbeing.

But you don't need to just take our word for it on the benefits of ketosis. Keep reading for 7 health benefits of going on the keto diet.

1. Suppress Appetite

Most people will say that the worst side effect of dieting is feeling hungry and missing their favorite foods.

But with a Keto diet, you will actually see a reduction in your appetite. By cutting carbs and eating more proteins and fats, you will get more energy and nutrition from fewer calories. You can even get keto versions of foods you wouldn't expect, like Keto coffee.

2. Faster Weight Loss

Cutting carbs can be one of the easiest and most effective ways to achieve weight loss. For weight loss, Keto can be more effective than low-fat diets.

This is because zero-carb diets get rid of excess water weight with ketogenesis. They lower insulin levels too, which leads to rapid weight loss in the first couple of weeks.

3. Lose Tummy Weight

The two main types of fat your body stores are subcutaneous and visceral fat. Subcutaneous is fat stored under the skin. Visceral is fat that builds in the abdominal cavity around your organs.

Keto is great at reducing this visceral fat. It is actually the type of fat people on zero-carb diets lose the most. In the long run, you should see a huge reduction in the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

4. Lower Cholesterol

The higher your "bad" LDL, the more likely you are to have a heart attack. The size of particles is important too. The smaller the particles are, the higher the risk of heart disease. Having larger ones seems to reduce that risk.

Keto increases the size of "bad" LDL particles. They also reduce the number of them in your bloodstream. Over time, ketogenesis will increase your heart health.

5. Normalize Blood Sugar

Keto can be very helpful for people with diabetes and insulin resistance. Cutting carbs leads to huge reductions in insulin levels and blood sugar. This can mean almost immediate reductions in your insulin dosage.

If you are on blood sugar medication, see your doctor before making any dietary changes. They will be able to make sure you get the right medication dosage at all stages.

6. Lower Blood Pressure

Hypertension or raised blood pressure is a big risk factor for many diseases. These include strokes, kidney failure, and heart disease.

Keto is effective in lowering blood pressure. Ketosis will help reduce the risk of getting these disease and help you to live a healthier, longer life.

7. Decrease in Triglycerides

There are fat molecules that run in your bloodstream called triglycerides. High levels of triglycerides increase the risk of heart disease.

A large reason behind high triglycerides in inactive people is carb intake. Especially in the form of the sugar fructose. When switching to Keto, people often see a huge reduction in triglyceride levels.

The Benefits of a Keto Diet

As you can see, a Keto diet really can help improve your health. Weight loss is faster and easier on Keto, and it won't even feel like you are missing out. But the benefits of ketosis aren't just visible. You will be generally healthier with lower blood pressure and reduced chance of heart failure.

How To Control Your Hunger While Dieting

grapefruit natural hunger reducer appetite suppressant diet frugal fitness nutrition

If you are like most people, just the thought of going on a diet can inspire feelings of hunger (and quite a bit of dread). Your growling stomach and the constant battle within your head fighting off sugar cravings can make dieting nearly impossible. It can feel like you are being deprived of food and you could crack at any minute and indulge, only to feel guilty right after.

Fortunately, there are a few ways you can reduce your hunger so that you can get back to a healthier and happier you without feeling deprived.

1. Drink More Water

Sometimes when we think we are hungry, our body is really just thirsty. This is because our hypothalamus regulates hunger and thirst and gives very similar signals when we need to eat or drink. Usually, it’s the latter. To combat this, ensure that you stay hydrated throughout the day and if you feel hunger creeping up, drink about 16 ounces (2 cups) of water and wait 15 minutes for your body to process it before going straight to a meal.

2. Aromatherapy

There is a clear link between your sense of smell and your appetite. Think back to the last time you had a stuffy nose. You probably weren't as hungry because your sense of smell, which contributes to hunger, was blocked. Sniffing peppermint oil can help reduce your appetite and make you feel less hungry. This has been an assertion by aromatherapists for a long time but several years ago, psychologist Bryan Raudenbush conducted a study which confirmed that the scent of peppermint was indeed effective at curbing hunger cravings. In the study, a set of volunteers were divided into two groups. One group was instructed to inhale the aroma of peppermint (through inhalers) every two hours while the other group sniffed nothing.

Over the next week, those who sniffed the peppermint had fewer hunger cravings and actually consumed 2800 fewer calories in the period. For reference, 3500 calories is generally considered to be equivalent to about one pound.

Aromatherapy can also help you relax if you tend to be an emotional or stress eater. Some of the best oils for stress include lavender, bergamot and Roman chamomile.

3. Meal Replacement Shakes

Hungry people don’t make good decisions. If your cravings start to bug you in the late morning or early afternoon, and you know dinner time isn’t for several hours, you may be tempted to just have yourself a large lunch so you can focus on the rest of your day and be productive. A meal replacement shake can help you to honor your diet and stay on track with your weight loss efforts. You can always make your own meal replacement shakes using ingredients in your pantry and take them to work with you, or go with a premade powder mix. What’s important is that your shake has lots of protein and fiber, the two most import substances for satiety. The powders are carefully designed and already have calorie limits (usually under 300 calories) but you should ensure that when making your own, you pay attention to how many calories you’re using.

4. Sweat It Out

Often times you may think you are hungry out of boredom. We are all guilty of eating because we are bored!

The next time you are tempted to over-indulge, try getting up and moving your body! Not only will it get you closer to your weight loss goal, but you may not feel hungry anymore after your workout. This is because working out reduces your ghrelin levels that cause hunger and increases the hormones that reduce appetite.

5. Chew Gum

Gum chewing is one of the easiest ways to trick your body into thinking that it is either full or doesn’t require as much food. Though the exact mechanism behind it isn’t fully understood, studies have confirmed that it isn’t just a placebo effect (1) (2) (3).

Ensure that you chew sugar free gum to gain these diet benefits.

6. Consume More Fiber And Protein

Fiber and protein are the two most important substances when it comes to satiety. Protein works mainly by altering the levels of various related hormones such as ghrelin and GLP-1 while fiber adds bulk to food and slows down the time it takes to empty the stomach.

Another advantage of an increased protein intake while dieting is that it improves muscle retention (we usually lose a combination of fat and muscle while shedding pounds).

7. Nosh On A Grapefruit

Grapefruit is good for you and it makes for a tasty and colorful breakfast. It has plenty of essential nutrients that are great for you inside and out. Grapefruit lowers your insulin which regulates your metabolism, aiding appetite suppression. Avoid the temptation to smother it in sugar or you will get the opposite effect.

8. Caffeine

Caffeine not only reduces your appetite, it also boosts metabolism so you burn even more body fat. Just make sure you are drinking black coffee or green tea so you are not cancelling out the benefits with high calorie creamers and sugar.

Final Thoughts On Diet Hungers

It is easy for your hunger to get the best of you during a diet. Practice these healthy and natural appetite suppressant suggestions to help you get the results you are looking for and making it less of a struggle. Happy dieting frugal friends!

How To Eat Right On A Budget

You’ve probably heard it time and time again – the secret to health is eating right and being active. But for some people, this is easier said than done. Maybe their work confines them to a desk for hours at a time, or maybe they don’t make enough money to afford healthy food. In this article, we are going to focus on how to eat right on a budget – so if this interests you, then read on.

Focus On Whole Foods

Not the supermarket as they tend to be quite pricey. Instead, don’t spend your grocery budget on processed foods as they tend to be less nutritious and often cost more. This means you should favor fresh produce, beans, nuts, and meat and fish over boxed meals or just about anything that is pre-packaged. Even those so-called ‘healthy’ options. The reality is that if a food is pre-packaged it is often not good for you.

Favor ‘Cheap’ Proteins

According to nutritionists, building and maintaining muscle mass requires roughly 1 gram of protein for every pound of body weight, especially if you're lifting weights. When you do the math, you can see that this can really add up over the course of a month.

As such, you want to focus on those protein options which are less costly. These include eggs, whole milk, tuna, liver, frozen chicken breast, and even some cheeses. Another great option is whey protein which can be teamed with milk and some fresh fruit to creates healthy and delicious smoothies which won’t break the bank.

To Freeze Or Not To Freeze

When it comes to fruits and vegetables one open question is whether you should buy frozen or not. While the answer is often no, there are exceptions. These could include when you are planning to use the fruits or vegetables in cooked products – say homemade granola bars. In this case, going with frozen options is a cost-effective way to go.

An added benefit of going frozen is that it can allow you to keep the items for much longer than you could if you only bought fresh fruit and vegetables. However, you want to make sure your frozen options are not packed with preservatives. As such, you should look for those which are flash frozen as this will lock in the nutrients without the addition of preservatives.

Don’t Focus On Brands

When it comes to the distinction of brands to generic foods, much of the cost difference is in the marketing. In some cases, a generic option might even come from the same processor as a brand. Think about it, if you needed to buy ketogenic strips, you are probably going to focus on the option which offers the most consistent results at the lowest cost?

Why should it be any different when it comes to food? Sure, there is a sense of security when buying a brand but the reality is that most generics are just as good for you when it comes to staying lean. This is especially true when it comes to raw foods where there is no benefit from buying a brand option.

Use Supplements

As mentioned, one low-cost, yet healthy protein option is whey powder. But this isn’t the only supplement option you want to consider as buying fish oil and multivitamins can also help you to eat healthy for less. The only thing to consider when you are adding supplements to your diet is which ones are needed and to what amount. As such, you will probably want to discuss this with your doctor before stocking up on pills.

Bulk Up

By this point, you have probably heard of the concept known as ‘economies of scale’. In simple terms, this means that when the purchasing power goes up, prices fall. Back to the real world, this means that you should look for opportunities to buy in bulk – when it makes sense. If you want to pay top dollar for single serving sizes of food then be our guest.

For example, you probably won’t bulk up on fresh fruits; but taking advantage of a sale or a promotion might help you lower your overall budget. Another trick includes buying a side of beef and then cutting it into portion sizes at home. Not only will you end up with higher quality beef but it will cost you less.

Get Dense, Calorie Dense

You’re trying to eat healthy on a budget and this means you want to get the most bang for your buck. This means getting whole milk, potatoes, rice, protein pasta, and oats as these foods are filling and cost less than more exotic options.

Follow The Seasons

If you are buying fruits and vegetables that are out of season, then you are wasting your money. Instead, focus on what is in season as these options will be fresher and cost less.

Weight Watchers (WW) vs. Frugal Fitness & The Frugal Diet

weight watchers vs frugal fitness vs the frugal diet book

Weight Watchers (now known as WW and partially owned by Oprah Winfrey) has helped a lot of clients that I've worked with and I think it is a pretty good overall program. However, WW doesn't always address all the aspects of nutrition and can also be a lot more costly than my services such a Frugal Fitness, or more specifically my nutritional plan The Frugal Diet. My customized meal plans are a flat rate of $59.99 and at least a month of free internet support.

Weight Watchers is a much longer and often more expensive commitment (especially if you attend most or all of the meetings which is important for community support). The WW internet support is usually an additional fee on top of normal membership. I admit I don't know the exact numbers and I need to look into it a little more in detail, but if I had to guess I would assume you'd spend a lot more money on Weight Watchers than you would on me and you probably wouldn't get any better results.

Weight Watchers doesn't address every aspect of healthy nutrition because it depends largely on a simplified point system that takes the major nutrient type and calories into account, but not the quality of the nutrients, meal timing, blood sugar response, and some other important factors. According to Weight Watchers, 2 pieces of whole wheat toast might be the same exact point value as 3 pieces of white toast. Which one is the healthier choice? Obviously the 2 pieces of wheat toast gives you much more nutrients and a better blood sugar response than the calorie and point equivalent of white toast. That's just one example but you get the idea about WW.

The "ideal weight" that Weight Watchers encourages is dependent on the old BMI (Body Mass Index) measurement which is actually somewhat outdated now. BMI is simply a ratio of weight vs. height and does not take into account the quality of body weight (body fat percentage and muscle). For example, I am obese according to the BMI measurement of about 26 because I am 5'5" and 165 lbs. This is too heavy for my height based on averages, even though my bodyfat is about 12% which is excellent.

frugal diet healthy soup

Weight Watchers meeting costs can also vary depending on if you have maintained your ideal weight, lost additional weight, or gained weight above your ideal weight. You may get to attend WW meetings for free if you are doing well but then have to pay attendance fees if your weight goes over during a week or month.

And let's not forget about the cost of commuting and the time spent adhering to the Weight Watchers system (time is money) that you could be investing in workouts, shopping, or dieting While I do think that Weight Watchers can sometimes be good motivation to stay committed to your diet, I do not really like to punish my clients for having a bad week and charge them extra.

Anyways, there are plenty of factors that you need to take into consideration before making your choice between WW and The Frugal Diet when you are watching your weight.

Do you need face to face group support that Weight Watchers can offer or is internet support enough? Can you make the larger commitment to Weight Watchers?  Do you want to improve your knowledge of nutrition or just go by a simple point system?

That is for you to decide, but I am obviously biased that Frugal Fitness overall or The Frugal Diet book comprehensive nutritional program is the best option for dieters on any budget over WW. Either way, it pays to watch your weight and lose some of that extra bodyfat! Consider either option an investment in your health.

Can Protein Powder Help You Lose Weight?

can protein powder help lose weight

Protein powder isn’t just for the bodybuilding crowd or professional athletes looking for a competitive edge. It is also an essential weight loss supplement that can make a major difference in your efforts to slim down, regardless of your starting point and goals.

There is no question that protein powder can help you lose that stubborn weight, but there’s a right and wrong way to go about it. In this article, we’ll highlight the power of protein to help you lose weight, and offer some practical tips to achieve your fitness goals in a safe, sustainable way.

We will also reveal what to look for in a protein powder so you choose the right one and waste no more time in your weight loss efforts.

How Protein Powder Works For Weight Loss

It’s time to set the record straight about how protein powder works and how it affects weight loss. Here are the main points you need to know about protein shakes and smoothies for fat loss.

Keeps You Full

If you’ve ever tried protein powder mixed with water or in shake form, you’ll know that it satisfies hunger in a matter of minutes. Protein is highly satiating and sends a signal to our brains that all is well in the nutrition department.

A well-timed scoop of protein powder is also tasty enough to satisfy cravings for something sweet, rather than reaching for an unhealthy snack.

No Carbs, Low Fat

With its lean nutrient profile, protein powder is a useful asset in any low-carb toolkit.

You don’t need to be full-on keto to lose weight. Still, minimizing carbohydrates can help you shed fat more quickly and combat insulin resistance as well.

If you are waging war on carbs, protein powder is something you can’t live without.

Precise Portions

Counting calories is a drag when dealing with standard foods like meat, veggies, starches, and drinks. Rather than calculating and estimating all the time, protein powder offers a clean, even scoop that contains the exact number of cals you need.

For anyone new to the idea of macro tracking or calorie counting, protein powder is a perfect introduction and makes everything else easier.

Thermogenic Effects

Protein of any kind is known to heat the body from within and burn more calories via thermogenic reaction. It explains the protein “glow” after consuming lean meats or a quick shake.

This makes protein powder ideal for a pre-workout snack, instead of a carb-heavy meal that will only slow you down.

When your workout is through, you’ll also get a noticeable “afterburn” effect from a timely post-exercise shake, so don’t miss that crucial window for consumption.

Muscle = Fat Burning

The whole concept of weight loss is misleading since lean muscle weighs far more than fat.

What you really want is a lean physique with a lower bodyfat percentage, which requires recomposition over the long term. Protein powder helps you get closer to that balance. Don’t just go by what the scale says!

Weight Loss Done Right With Protein Powder

Simply drinking protein powder every day isn’t going to transform your body - you need a plan. Here is how to utilize this supplement properly to get actual results.

Pick The Right Product

With thousands of protein powders out there, how do you pick the right one? Spell out your own dietary needs and priorities (dairy, gluten, plant-based, etc) then find a product with a flavor and nutrient profile that suits you.

You may also discover specialized weight loss protein powder if you know where to look.

Timing And Portions

Learn when and how to take protein powder to experience its weight loss effects. For some, a first-in-the-morning shake is great for metabolism boosting, while others find that a mid-afternoon snack is better.

Also, be accurate with your portion sizes, and don’t get carried away with extra scoops. When in doubt, turn to your trusty calorie counter application and track your macronutrients as well.

Stay Active

Protein powder works best when your body is active in the gym, on the trail, or just navigating everyday life. Do your best to avoid sedentary living and you’ll see results more quickly.

The more active your lifestyle, the greater the effect of your protein powder will be on weight loss, strength gains, and general health.

Lose The Weight (And Get Stronger)

Is protein powder the instant weight loss solution you’ve been looking for? Probably not. However, the right product - used correctly - can absolutely help you take control of your diet strategy and stay satiated when cravings kick in.

As an added bonus, you can find specialized protein powders that fit your body’s unique profile, which can advance your weight loss game plan and tilt the odds in your favor long term.

Use protein powder as a smart supplement and you’ll finally be on track to your ideal weight. Plus, you’ll be stronger, more resilient, and healthier overall - that’s what matters.

What You Should Know About The Keto Diet

information about keto diet

The keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet. In general, your daily ketogenic calorie intake should be 20 percent fat, 75% protein, and less than five grams of carbs. In addition to reducing your intake of carbohydrates, the keto diet can also lower your risk of heart disease and cancer. It is important to note that you can still eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. The carb content of these foods should not be more than 20 grams per day. For knowing in detail about keto and other weight-loss diets you should visit https://www.healthstatus.com/keto-diet/keto-extreme-fat-burner/, a proper and authentic guideline about the diet plans along with weight loss supplements.

The keto diet is not suitable for everyone. People with high levels of blood sugar and/or heart disease should avoid it. If you are at risk for developing heart disease or other heart conditions, you should consult with your doctor before starting this diet. If you are diabetic, do not start a keto diet until you have undergone a checkup with your doctor. You should also consult your physician before starting a new diet. You can also avoid certain foods that may affect your health, including those that cause nausea and constipation.

Vitamins With Keto Diets

When starting a keto diet, you should make sure you get the right vitamins and minerals from your foods. You should also include a variety of foods rich in fiber and water. These will help you absorb more of the nutrients from your foods. A high-fiber and water-rich diet should be your goal throughout ketosis.

However, if you are unsure of what type of food to eat, you should consider seeking chiropractic care. Chiropractic adjustments can help you maintain your spinal alignment, which will help you burn more calories through a more efficient metabolism. When your body is operating correctly, it utilizes nutrients more effectively.

Risks Of Keto Intake

Although the keto diet may seem to be safe, it can pose a few risks. For instance, the high-fat foods that are recommended for ketogenic dieters may be high in sodium and have negative effects on some other medical conditions. Therefore, you should be aware of these risks before attempting this diet. If you suffer from any of these conditions, you should discuss the ketogenic diet with your doctor. The most common side effects of the ketogenic diet are constipation, diarrhea, and nausea.

Aside from foods with a high amount of fat, you should also limit foods that contain high levels of carbohydrates. You should aim to avoid processed grains and sugar, as they are high in calories and lack fiber. In addition, you should eat a variety of foods that are high in fiber and low in carbohydrates. For instance, a high-fat diet should include dairy, nuts, eggs, and eggs. These are all sources of fat.

When it comes to the keto diet, you should focus on high-fat foods that have high amounts of fiber and water. High-fat foods should be at least 15% of your calorie intake. This type of diet is known to be beneficial for the digestive system and can improve your energy and stamina. In addition, you should eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, as they are rich in vitamins and minerals. During your ketogenic diet, you should also consume protein-rich sources.

What Kind Of Foods Should Be Minimized During Keto?

While it is possible to get enough protein by eating a high-fat diet, you should not limit your intake of sugar. It contains a lot of carbohydrates, which are bad for your health. For this reason, you should limit your consumption of high-fat food. For example, a high-fat diet could have more sugar than a normal diet. Hence, it is best to avoid processed and refined grains.

If you are a vegetarian, you can eat some vegetables and fruits if you want. If you are a vegetarian or a vegan, you should try to minimize the intake of animal proteins. Instead, opt for high-fat sources of protein such as nuts and avocados. They contain unsaturated fats, which are good for the body. These fats can help your skin and hair glow and also prevent cancer. Aside from these, you should avoid foods that are high in sodium. The keto diet is not safe for those with cardiovascular disease or a higher risk of heart disease.

Keto Conclusion

The keto diet has many advantages, but it also has some drawbacks. First, it increases your saturated fat intake. While a low-carb diet has many benefits, it is not advisable for everyone. The body will be unable to process carbohydrates and will store them as fat. It will produce energy in a very slow manner. So, it is essential to avoid foods that are high in sugar. But be careful! Besides that, eating too much sugar will make you feel hungry and cause weight loss.

Reflux Surgeon In Atlanta Suggests How To Control GERD Symptoms With Diet And Lifestyle Changes

how to control gerd symptoms lifestyle changes diet reduce reflux

One out of 5 Americans suffers from GERD or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. It is a condition, where acidic contents from your stomach constantly leak up in your esophagus tube that connects the throat and stomach. When a valve at the bottom of the esophagus called the lower esophageal sphincter fails to close properly after food enters the stomach and digestion starts, the acid backwash flows towards the throat and gives your mouth a sour taste. Acid reflux occurs at some point, but when it occurs frequently, then you need to visit your doctor.

The experienced doctors at Peachtree Surgical & Bariatrics offer reflux surgery in Atlanta to patients struggling with chronic acid reflux. Nevertheless, there is also a need to make lifestyle and diet changes so you can avoid surgery by keeping indigestion at bay.

The main symptoms of chronic acid reflux are constant acid regurgitation and heartburn. Some people don’t feel heartburn but experience chest pain, trouble swallowing, or hoarseness when they wake in the morning. Your throat may also feel tight and choked. GERD even causes bad breath and dry cough.

Anti-Reflux Diet

Some studies report how simple dietary changes have helped sufferers to reduce their GERD symptoms significantly.

● Be conscious in choosing food and beverages. Monitor the kind of food and drinks that agitate your symptoms often. Avoid the ones that trigger your symptoms. Common foods that trigger acid reflux include carbonated beverages, tea, coffee, spicy foods, fatty, and fried foods. Even tomatoes, citrus fruits, onions, garlic, chocolate, and peppermint aggravate GERD symptoms.

● Large meals take a long time to leave the stomach and can stress the valve between the esophagus and stomach. Therefore, eat small meals frequently.

● According to research, beer and white wine induce reflux, so avoid alcohol.

Lifestyle Changes

● Excess weight increases the possibility of distorting valve anatomy, which can trigger reflux.

● Never lie down flat within 3 hours of eating. As the valve is not working properly, the stomach's acidic content flows back towards your throat. Therefore, don’t recline for 3 hours after eating.

● According to research, resting at a little inclined position facilitates the gravity to work. Therefore, raise the head side of the bed by 7 to 8 inches, so that the nighttime reflux episodes get reduced.

● Maintain a healthy weight to reduce stomach pressure because an increase can trigger GERD symptoms.

● Nicotine weakens the connecting valve between the esophagus and stomach, so refrain from smoking.

Recover Your Life From Recurring Reflux

Reflux occurrence now and then is normal, but if it disturbs your life, visit an experienced Bariatric surgeon in Atlanta. Keep these tips in mind to help get rid of GERD and reduce reflux. Reflux doesn't have to rule your life!
