HIIT Diet Tips: What To Eat Before And After Workouts

hiit diet tips eating before after workouts high intensity interval training exercise

Many people like high-intensity interval training nowadays due to one simple fact – it is really efficient. With HIIT you will get great results in a short period of time. Of course, this kind of workout is quite exhausting and challenging, that is why it is so rewarding.

However, many people still don’t realize how important it is to have a proper diet follow their workout regimen. Without proper food, your body won’t be able to build muscle which means that you can’t get shredded if you eat junk food.

So, take a look below and learn what type of nutrition you need to support a HIIT workout program.

Healthy Foods To Add In General

No matter what workout regimen you are on, you should know some ingredients that always need to be a part of your diet. It is common knowledge that junk food is a major no-no, but what other foods should you add?

Go for whole grains, fruits, veggies, and lean proteins. When you start crafting your nutrition plan, it is important that you have adequate calories and macronutrients included. Carbs are needed to fuel the body and provide energy stores for workouts.

You shouldn’t cut off too many foods you like, people sometimes forget that restrictive diet inhibits their wellness success. Instead, cut snacks, unhealthy fats and alcohol. Aim at clean foods and always stay hydrated. Especially during your workouts. This should come as one of the most important muscle building principles.

Nutrition Before Workouts

Seeing that these workouts are really difficult, it’s important to follow a healthy nutrition plan with adequate nutrition in the days and hours before a workout. You need to plan a moderate- to high-carb meal that also includes protein. This meal should be prepared and eaten three to four hours before the workout.

Then go for a high-carb snack within an hour after the workout. Some good options for a meal before the workout include whole-wheat toast with peanut butter and banana or non-fat Greek yogurt with dried fruit and almonds.

Nutrition After Workouts

Once you are done with your workout, you have depleted energy levels. That’s perfectly fine, that needs to happen. However, the main concern after a workout is the replenishment of energy. To be precise, you need to replace energy stores and thus repair muscles that have been broken down during the intense workout.

Again, you need to aim at a combination of carbs and protein. That is the most effective way to replenish energy stores. Aim at a 3:1 ratio of carbs in preparation for the next HIIT workout. Take a look at some suggestions for meals following you HIIT workouts.

You could eat whole-grain cereal with fruit and soy milk, you could also go for whole-wheat crackers with fruit and cheese. If you really rely on bread and can’t say no to it, try to replace it with hummus and pita bread.

These are great substitutes since they aren’t as harmful as your usual bread but they can still make you feel full nonetheless.

List Of Ingredients You Need To Have Home If You Like HIIT

Some ingredients that you need to stock up on are:

● Hummus and whole-grain pita chips
● Chicken breast
● Veggies
● Fruits like apple, pear, banana, berries
● Peanut butter
● Greek yogurt
● Cottage cheese
● Quinoa with berries
● Nuts

As you can see, some of these foods and snacks have been mentioned above. To ensure that you stay on track when it comes to your diet, always have these ‘ingredients’ home. That way you can always grab something to eat whenever you feel food cravings.

Only this time you won’t hurt your gym progress or anything like that. These will make it easy for you to make your perfect combination of carbs and proteins both for your pre-workout and post-workout meals and snacks.

Conclusion

Never forget that good diet is as important as the effort you put in on a regular-day basis in the gym. Proper diet is the other important ingredient of a successful gym journey.

So, do your best to stay disciplined and choose only the right ingredients for your meals. Oh, and always stay hydrated.

CrossFit From The Couch Home Program Guide

Getting up off the sofa and going to the gym is impossible sometimes. Sure, the good weather changes things but you still don’t want to be stuck inside. And, no one wants to spend the summer working out in a stuffy room full of exercise equipment. Plus it is expensive.

Health and well-being, then, can suddenly take a turn for the worse. Whereas everything was under control before, now you are slacking off hard. What are the solutions? What should you do?

The answer is to work out from home if the gym is too demanding, mentally and physically. CrossFit has you covered – thanks Glassman and Jenai – but you must tailor the program to your surroundings.

The Gear

People can complete CrossFit programs without specialist clothes, but it’s hard work. Remember that workouts are developed with a vast range of movements in mind. WODs are a prime example of this. So, you’re going to need to be able to stretch and lunge and breathe throughout the exercises. And, your outfit should reflect this fact. The post “11 Best CrossFit Shoes Reviews” has info on comfy and stable footwear, while the humorous and helpful article “What NOT to Wear to a CrossFit Class” covers everything else. If in doubt, choose comfortable and stretchy over tight and restricting.

The Workouts

Once you have the outfit down, then it is time to choose a program which suits your needs. Whatever you do, please don’t pick one at random because this method won’t work. CrossFit is about doing specifically tailored exercises which you reach a target. It may be anything from losing weight to toning up, but the essential part is to understand the body’s needs. Without a guide, you are going to have to use the internet as a research tool. To learn more, check out “How to Create a Crossfit Workout.”

The Structure

How often you exercise and how often you take a break are essential components of any program. To begin with, getting the right balance will help you to target your problem areas. After a while, you should start to see an improvement. Secondly, a balance breeds routine, which improves attitude and dedication. Training for five days a week (and trying to eat clean at the same time) is bound to make you want to quit and try a new fad.

However, doing three days in a row with a rest day is a very good compromise. Also, do the least strenuous activities first and work your way up to the hardest ones to help you lose the most bodyfat and build the most muscle.

The Language

Using a YouTube video or a workout DVD (do they still exist?) is a fantastic way to ensure you are doing your training correctly. The only issue is the jargon because they assume listeners and watchers are CrossFit-ready. Anyone who isn’t should learn the terms ASAP as it will improve the experience. For instance, WOD means “workout of the day,” and AMRAP stands for “as many rounds as possible.” classes are held in “boxes,” too - not gym classes. What do you think? Are you ready to give CrossFit a try at home?

Get In Shape With HIT FIT Sport Workouts

HIT FIT Sport, or High Intensity Training Fitness Interval Training, is a workout system built around a unique combination of exercise science and athletics. Let's take a look at this unique method of working out:

What Workouts Comprise HIT FIT?

HIT FIT combines a unique combination of typical fitness along with sporting elements, such as the practice of Fencing or Karate. Some of the activities that are included in HIT FIT include:

- Fencing
- Martial Arts
- Dance
- Boxing
- Kickboxing

The types of activities that you participate in depends on the type of HIT FIT program that you join. Different instructors of HIT FIT have different methods. Regardless of the methods that your fitness coach uses to teach you HIT FIT, you will experience a unique exercise technique that will benefit your body more than a traditional fitness plan can accomplish.

HIT FIT Sporting Events

Participating in sporting events in the HIT FIT program is a big part of your training. Not only will these sporting events help you to achieve your fitness goals at a faster pace, but several of the sports can be used later in life, even after you complete your fitness goals. Sounds fun right? We think so!

What Does HIT FIT Concentrate On?

Well, the HIT FIT program is quite the unusual exercise system. This program focuses on the following aspects of the fitness world: Anaerobic Threshold Balance Body Composition Strength VO2 Max (maximal oxygen consumption).

HIT FIT Anaerobic Threshold

A basic definition of the HIT FIT Anaerobic Threshold is that it occurs when muscles "burn" creatine and glucose without the use of oxygen. Anaerobic Threshold is ideal for those who need that short extra burst in their life. On the flip side, Anaerobic Threshold training would not be ideal for a distance runner or endurance athlete.

HIT FIT Balance

Another important part of the HIT FIT way is the aspect of balance. A majority of people who participate in this exercise plan are athletes. These people require a great amount of agility and balance to succeed at what they do best. By having greater balance, you can even increase the efficiency of your workout and prevent injury.

HIT FIT Physique

HIT FIT body composition is a way of describing the percentage of bone, fat, and muscle in your body. The HIT FIT system puts a lot of attention on the aspect of body composition, as it is vital to balance the mass percentages of bone, fat, and muscle in ones body. It's a great way to tone up along with a healthy balanced diet.

HIT FIT Strength

HIT FIT works with your overall body strength. Since the HIT FIT way of exercise revolves around sporting activities, it is important to have strength as it will give you the opportunity to push your body to the next level.

HIT FIT VO2 Max

What is VO2 Max? Basically, VO2 Max is another meaning for the maximal amount of oxygen consumption. It plays a very important role in HIT FIT as your VO2 Max directly determines how physically fit you are. Each person has a different VO2 Max. The max can be included over time through HIT FIT exercises.

Is HIT FIT The Right Fit For You?

So, is HIT FIT Sport right for you? While it's not for everyone, you should definitely consider this way to exercise. If you are interested in starting on a HIT FIT exercise plan, you should speak to your local fitness coach or gym trainer to see if such a program is offered.

Zachary Hunter is a personal trainer, gym owner, and online fitness coach in Washington DC.

Tone Up With Total Turbulence Training

What is turbulence training? Turbulence training is really a workout training regimen that specifically focuses on fat loss and increasing lean muscle growth. Turbulence training workout starts with the user having a bodyweight warm-up that prepares the whole body for the workout at home, while traveling or at the gym.

The bodyweight warm-up involves the use of the body as a lot as possible with each and every exercise routine. Prisoner squats, which incorporate the upper back muscles, pushing movements, like pushups tailored to the level of difficulty for the user, and pulling movements that focus on shoulder blade retraction. The entire workout trains the abs all through every routine, so the core is constantly worked on.

This is achieved by tightening up the abs, activating all the muscles of the core in all exercises. Following the initial stage of the workout, optimizing your strength training is next. Portion of the turbulence training is picking one of the most efficient and effective physical exercise principle. The efficient physical exercise, also known as the "amp exercises", are two exercises completed back-to-back with rest time. The two exercises don't work the same muscle groups, for example, using the pushing exercise, such as chest press or pushups, and a pulling exercise, like body weight rolls.

This whole process is called a non-competing supersets physical exercise, where one muscle group is allowed to work while another muscle group is allowed to recover. This increases density, which burns more calories, burning fat causing it to be lost quicker. This is done with low reps that eventually make the user stronger. Right after this exercise routine, stretching is done only for those muscles that are tight, rather than the whole body. Fat loss at intervals comes right after the strength training routine of the same.

A typical workout set written up would be as follows:

1) Bodyweight Warm-up of 10 reps twice of squats, pushups ,and stickups

2) Strength training superset 1 of lower body and upper body pushing exercises, including 8 reps per set with 1 minute rest time, before repeating the exercises for a total of 3 supersets.

3) Strength training super set 2 of lower body and upper body pulling physical exercise, including 8 reps per set with no rest between routines, before repeating the exercise for a total of 3 supersets.

4) Last work out is interval training for 20 minutes, giving a full fat-burning workout for 45 minutes.

This can be a typical training regimen, done for a total of 12 weeks. Right after the end of the 12 weeks, a week away from any turbulence training should be taken to aid the body in recovery. Light low intensity workouts can be used during the recovery week.

Before the turbulence training workout has started, there are 3 important factors that should be taken into account:

1) Social Support. It is believed that social support is paramount for any fitness program;

2) Nutrition is the second among critical factors in any fat loss program; and

3) Physical exercise is third most critical factor when it comes to fat loss through fitness training.

If you need to add some intensity or mix up your workouts then tone it up with total turbulence training today!

I hope you enjoyed this article about how to utilize total turbulence training workouts with frugal finances.

Tips For Fitting Fitness Into A Busy Schedule On A Budget

fitness on a budget no excuses

Reaching their optimum fitness levels and maxing their absolute fitness potential is something that many people aspire to do. Unfortunately, however, life gets in the way. Specifically, their busy schedules get in the way and their lack of funds get in the way. But, there are ways to circumvent these unavoidable aspects of life that are the enemy of staying fit… you just have to be willing to put the hard work needed in to finding ways around them.

If you want to fit fitness into your busy schedule whilst operating on a tight budget, make sure to read on.

Bring The Gym To Your Home

The first thing that you should do when trying to get fit whilst operating on both a tight schedule and a tight budget is to forgo the gym completely and instead work out at your home. By doing so you instantly cut down the time taken getting yourself ready for the gym, the time taken travelling to the gym and the time taken waiting for others to be done with the equipment you want to use for your specific workout whilst at the gym. And, of course, when you don’t go to the gym you don’t have to pay the membership fees to have the privilege to do so, so you will be saving both time and money by not going to one.

So, bring the gym home to you and use all of the things in your home that can be used as workout machines as workout machines; you’d be surprised at just how handy your bathtub can be when it comes to doing this.

Prepare Healthy Meals In The Quickest & Cheapest Ways

Being fit is not just about working out, it’s about eating and drinking right. And, in order to eat and drink right whilst on a tight schedule you’re going to have to have to prepare good, wholesome foods in the quickest time possible. This could mean blending superfoods together and making yourself a green smoothie in the morning to consume throughout the day or getting yourself a healthy protein substance to provide you with the nutrients needed throughout your day to keep you on your feet and active. Both of these ventures do not demand a lot of time to be taken on preparing them and neither break the bank in regards to how much they cost.

Fit Frugal Fitness Into Your Schedule

As you can see, there are ways to fit staying in shape into a schedule that seemingly has no room for maneuvering and into a tight budget that is apparently unyielding. So, remember that the next time you try to use the excuse that you having no time or money is the reason why you are not taking your personal health and fitness seriously!

I hope you enjoyed this article about how to fit your workouts into your busy schedule while still staying on a budget.

Does HIIT Exercise Work Or Is It A Marketing Ploy?

Frugal Fitness Workout Question:  Does High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) work or is it simply a marketing gimmick?

Frugal Fitness Answer:

I have a unique perspective on this because my degree is in exercise physiology and I spent 10 years as highly credentialed personal trainer / nutrition consultant… but I’ve transitioned to a career as a digital marketing manager full time over the last 5-6 years.

Anyways, High Intensity Interval Training as an exercise technique works very well. It's a staple in military style workouts that also carry over into fitness boot camps, sport practice training, group exercise classes, and other common formats. And depending on the equipment you use (or lackthereof) it can be a very frugal workout option. It’s an efficient way to burn calories, boost metabolism, improve endurance, and build lean muscle. Great for people short on time and/or training for some sports. Not quite as ideal for bodybuilders, powerlifters, or strictly endurance athletes like marathon runners. It depends on your purpose for training whether you should utilize HIIT for a portion of your workouts, or possibly the majority of your workouts.

But fitness marketing companies of course will exaggerate its benefits and claim it to have miraculous effects. It’s a great workout strategy for many people but it’s not necessarily the best option for everyone and it’s certainly not going to reverse years of inactivity and poor nutrition within a matter of weeks or even months.

Also keep in mind that “high intensity intervals” are relative to the person performing the exercise. What an elite athlete considers low intensity training could easily be considered high intensity for a sedentary or middle-aged person.

Hopefully this is helpful when deciding whether to incorporate HIIT into your frugal workout sessions.

Insane Incline Treadmill Training Workout

Contributed By Courtney Horan, Author of Sweet Tooth Sweet Life
Happy Tuesday evening my friends!
I just got home from a fabulous trip to the gym, AND I have a new workout to share with you. Aren’t you psyched? ;)
You may remember, a few weeks back, when I attempted a couple new cardio workoutsout of an old Self magazine that I have? Well, today I attempted a different one that was in there…ohhhh myyyyy…
It isn’t so much the speed that makes this workout a challenge, it’s the incline. Talk about insane! So let’s call it…

It’s funny really…if I had done this workout at home, I definitely would have been satisfied with doing those 30 minutes and calling it a day. However, if I trek all the way to the gym, I always feel that I really have to make the most of my time there, so I end up doing more. SO, I hopped on over to the elliptical and did another 30 minutes of intervals.
Considering I had taken the entire weekend off from exercise, plus had a not-so-great workout yesterday morning (didn’t feel well, so ended up doing a Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred video off of Exercise on Demand…wasn’t as great as I remembered?) it felt awesome to get back to a little hardcore sweating. Those feel-good endorphins had been missed!

Frugal Workout: Barefoot Plyometrics Anywhere

Contributed By Maria Waldron, Author of Lift Love Life

As I've mentioned many times on this blog, it is super hard for me to get a workout in at the gym with how cranky Caleb can get. I love that child but he really knows how to test my patience with his separation anxiety. Since day care isn't much of an option right now, the bulk of my workouts have to be at home. Fortunately, we're pretty blessed to have accumulated a pretty decent home gym. We have a set up of dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells, and an elliptical so I have no excuses to work out most days. But sometimes it's even hard for me to get to the garage to workout simply because I have to be all up in Caleb's face for him not to scream his head off.

Cue resorting to getting in a workout in my bedroom, while he sits in the bouncer staring at me.

As it turns out, I absolutely LOVED this workout that I created on the spot. It got my heart pumping, I was out of breath, and I'm definitely feeling the burn in my legs and shoulders as I type this post. I loved it so much that I had to share.

I know there are other moms out there who can't get to the gym all the time so I'm hoping this can help you out a little. It's fun, you can do it barefoot and anywhere in your home with nothing but your body weight (and maybe an ottoman), and your baby can have a grand ol' time watching you make an ass out of yourself while you get your sweat on.

Also, I FINALLY mustered up a tiny bit of courage to record a few demos since I've been asked to describe some of the moves I write about on here. I'm not a big fan of the whole working out in front of a camera (I find it cheesy for the most part) so I kept the videos short to spare myself the embarrassment. Plus, I had a baby who was tired of watching me bounce around the room by the time I made the videos.

Anyway, try it and let me know what you think. I liked it. I'm sure there's someone out there bound to like it as well!

Warmup: Plyo Side Jump thingies
Works: Just a way to get your heart going ;)
Reps: As many as you can for 3 minutes

Jump Lunges
Works: Legs, butt and heart ;)
Reps: As many as you can for 3 minutes.

No video because this is pretty self explanatory, haha.

Wall Climbers
Works: Be prepared to wreck your shoulders
How to do it: Start with your toes and chest on the floor like you're in the pushup position, walk your feet up the wall until your chest touches the wall, and then descend back to the original position.
Reps:  As many as you can in 3 minutes.

Jump Squats

Works: Legs, butt and heart.
How to do it: Squat and jump!
Reps: As many as you can for 2 minutes.

No video because again, this one is also pretty self explanatory.

Plank Jacks w/ Groiners
Works: Shoulders, abs, arms, legs, heart...the whole shebang.
How to do it: Start in the plank position. Jump both legs out to the side while keeping your back neutral. Do this 5 times, then bring your legs in like you're doing a mountain climber for 5 times.
Reps: As many as you can for 2 minutes.

Decline Plank Steps

Works: Shoulders, abs, legs, heart...again...the whole shebang.
How to do it: Start with your legs angled on the wall with your stomach facing the ground and your back to the wall. Keep your back neutral and bring your legs down, tap the floor and bring them to the wall again.
Reps: As many as you can for 2 minute.

Finish with:
1 min side planks (left side)
1 min side planks (right side)
1 min full plank with leg lifts

Repeat Circuit 3-4 rounds (or as many times as you can)

Printable for ya:

Exercise
Reps

Jump Squats

20 Minute Home Tabata Workout & Under $20!

Contributed By Maria Waldron, Author of Lift Love Life

It's a tabata workout which means you work as hard and as intensely as you can for 20 seconds, and then rest for 10 seconds. You repeat this 8 times which amounts to a total of 4 minutes and that's one tabata. Tabata's are meant to be quick, painful, and ultra intense. They're one of the fastest ways to get fit and lose fat in a short amount of time but the key is to make sure you go all out during the 20 second interval.

The first tabata consists of various exercises that work your whole body, again using only your body as resistance. The second tabata is a jump roping tabata, you don't need a jump rope since you can mimic the jump rope motion but I prefer to actually use one since I find I jump faster and harder with one. Speed Jump ropes are cheap and easy to find and they really do make a difference.

Use a gymboss to time your intervals. If you don't have one, this site works. And you can even download it onto your computer to use offline. How sick is that?

Remember, make sure you go hard, but never sacrifice form. And if you're not wanting to die at the end, you're not working hard enough.

Oh and moms, you might want to do some kegels before these ;)

I tried to make a video to demonstrate the moves but that was an epic fail. If you follow my twitter, I tweeted about how I thought I had hit record but actually didn't. I did this 5 times before giving up and realizing the camera and I just aren't meant to be. I need my husband to record me because clearly I suck.

Also, I used a weighted jump rope (because my other one sucks now) so there was no way in hell I was going to go through another round just to try and make the video...what if it didn't record again? Pretty sure I would die and there would be no more blog posts. Sads.

Anyway, try this and let me know what you think. It's perfect for us busy moms or for those on the go and who don't have access to the gym. You'll get your heart pumping, build all over strength, burn fat and save yourself precious time. This is my new fave go-to workout!
